BACKGROUND: Osteosarcopenia (OSP), the coexistence of osteoporosis (OP) and sarcopenia, is a growing but underrecognized concern in older men. Sharing common risk factors, frailty and OSP often coexist, increasing the risk of falls, fractures, and functional decline. This study aimed to investigate the association between frailty and OSP in male patients aged 65–70 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 234 community-dwelling men aged 65–70 years who presented to a geriatrics outpatient clinic. OSP was defined by the presence of both low muscle strength and OP. Comprehensive geria…

AIM: To investigate whether low muscle mass is independently associated with adverse clinical outcomes in older adults hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia.
FINDINGS: Low muscle mass was highly prevalent in this population (89.4%), and severely low muscle mass was independently associated with increased 30-day mortality and readmission. In addition, a clear dose-response relationship was observed, with progressively lower muscle mass corresponding to worse clinical outcomes.
MESSAGE: In older adults hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia, muscle mass assessment on admission may support risk

Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and strength, affects the functional capacity of older adults. Strength training (ST) combined with adequate protein intake is a key element in reversing and improving functional capacity. Protein, especially Whey Protein isolates (WPI), is widely used to improve muscle mass. In contrast, high-protein products, such as protein yogurt (PY), may offer similar benefits for muscle health and drive additional effects on gut health, which is altered in older adults. For this, we aim to compare WP and PY supplementation during ST on body composition,…

Sleep disruption is a hallmark of aging and a plausible driver of Alzheimer's disease vulnerability. Reduced slow-wave sleep, increased fragmentation, and circadian instability may facilitate amyloid-β accumulation, tau propagation, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired glymphatic clearance. Yet the physiological factors that predispose older adults to unstable sleep remain insufficiently integrated into models of brain aging. This Review advances a sleep-muscle-brain framework in which sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, and insulin resistance are conceptualized as modifiable muscle-m…

AIM: One of the parameters that is measurable using bioelectrical impedance is the phase angle (PhA), which is an indicator of skeletal muscle quality. The PhA reflects cellular health and nutritional status and is an important parameter for monitoring recovery after stroke. However, the factors affecting skeletal muscle quality remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors associated with skeletal muscle quality in patients with acute stroke.
METHODS: A total of 505 consecutively hospitalized patients with acute stroke were included in this study. The primary outcome wa

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been pivotal for obesity treatment, achieving 15-25 % weight loss over 12-24 months, but questions remain about the potential influence of concomitant losses in muscle mass. Furthermore, low adherence, driven by high costs and side effects, results in up to two-thirds of users discontinuing treatment within a year, although up to a half reinitiate treatment. Given that cessation of treatment often leads to significant weight regain, there are concerns that older adults may be at risk for sarcopenic obesity; a condition characterized by

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by concomitant sarcopenia and obesity and presents a high risk of disability, morbidity, and mortality among older adults. However, predictions based on sequential neural network SO studies and the relationship between physical fitness factors and SO are lacking. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for SO in older adults by focusing on physical fitness factors. A comprehensive dataset of older Korean adults participating in national fitness programs was analyzed using sequential neural networks. Appendicular skeletal muscle/body weight was de…

Low muscle mass is a risk factor for mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, it is not clear to what extent low muscle mass contributes to this risk, either independently or in combination with metabolic abnormalities and frailty. This study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2006 and 2011-2018. Low muscle mass was defined as Appendicular Skeletal Mass Index < 7 kg/m2 in men or < 5.5 kg/m2 in women. The follow-up duration was from the first anthropometric and clinical measurements to death or the last follow-up. This study enrolle
