Diagnostic Journey for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-Interviews From a Clinical Trial.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic condition characterized by both medical and neuropsychiatric diagnoses that emerge across the lifespan. As part of a clinical trial, caregivers of children with TSC were interviewed about their experiences navigating medical, school, and social services. Semistructured interviews (N = 20) with caregivers of children with TSC (27-60 months) were conducted upon exit from the study. The interviews covered topics related to experiences following diagnosis, interactions with providers, sources of information, and access to services and treatment. The ma

A New Diversity Strategy to Increase Latinx Representation in Otolaryngology: A Survey of Latinx Medical Students.

Introduction: Despite ongoing diversity initiatives, Otolaryngology - Head and Neck surgery continues to face a widening representation gap as the Latinx population in the United States grows. To address this disparity, novel strategies for recruiting Latinx medical students into the specialty must be explored. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was distributed to Latinx medical students in the United States via social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) chapters. Results: Most respondents were unfamiliar with Otolaryngology-

Key mechanisms of affective disorders : CRC/TRR 393 project on mechanisms of emotion regulation, expectation, social cognition, and cognitive-behavioral rhythms.

BACKGROUND: Although affective disorders are a major driver of disability worldwide, there is a lack of understanding of the mechanisms and modulating factors involved in the long-term disease trajectories. OBJECTIVES: Our goal is to determine key cognitive-emotional mechanisms in the domains of emotion regulation, expectation, social cognition, and cognitive-behavioral rhythms and their neurobiological correlates in the progression of affective disorders, including recurrences and remissions, chronicity, and functional decline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In CRC/TRR 393, we will pursue a multi-l

Time-varying compartmental models with neural networks for pandemic infection forecasting.

The emergence and spread of deadly pandemics has repeatedly occurred throughout history, causing widespread infections and life loss. Forecasting the progression of pandemics is crucial for decision-makers to achieve its mitigation. This predictive task constitutes a challenge due to the non-stationary nature of pandemics, and changes in adopted policies and social reactions to them. Motivated by this, we present a hybrid pandemic infection forecasting methodology that integrates compartmental modelling and machine learning approaches. In particular, we develop a compartmental model that inclu

Impact of Acute Alcohol Consumption on Sexuality: A Look at Psychological Mechanisms.

Alcohol's link with sexuality is long-standing and prominent. While research continues to document robust associations between drinking and sexual behavior, scientific attention now centers primarily on evaluating mechanisms and attendant theoretical frameworks to advance our understanding of how alcohol exerts a causal impact. We describe four domains with reliable evidence of alcohol effects: sexualized social perceptions, sexual arousal, sexual risk taking, and sexual assault. We consider three contextual frames: distal factors associated with encountering opportunities for alcohol-involved

Patient interest in the development of a center for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/hypermobility spectrum disorder in the Chicagoland region.

BACKGROUND: The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of connective tissue disorders that are hereditary in nature and characterized by joint hypermobility and tissue fragility. The complex nature of this unique patient population requires multidisciplinary care, but appropriate centers for such care do not exist in large portions of the country. Need for more integrated services has been identified in Chicagoland, or Chicago and its suburbs. In order to explore and begin to address barriers to seeking appropriate care facing EDS patients in this region, we developed an online survey which

Protocol for Evaluating Remote Patient Blood Pressure Monitoring Adapted to Black Women and Birthing Persons.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death among Black women in the United States. A large, urban hospital adopted remote patient blood pressure monitoring (RBPM) to increase blood pressure monitoring and improve the management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) by reducing the time to diagnosis of HDP. The digital platform integrates with the electronic health record (EHR), automatically inputting RBPM readings to the patients' chart; communicating elevated blood pressure values to the healthcare team; and offers a partial offset of the cost through insurance plan

RNA-Seq reveals that Pseudomonas aeruginosa mounts growth medium-dependent competitive responses when sensing diffusible cues from Burkholderia cenocepacia.

Most habitats host diverse bacterial communities, offering opportunities for inter-species interactions. While competition might often dominate such interactions, little is known about whether bacteria can sense competitors and mount adequate responses. The competition sensing hypothesis proposes that bacteria can use cues such as nutrient stress and cell damage to prepare for battle. Here, we tested this hypothesis by measuring transcriptome changes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa exposed to the supernatant of its competitor Burkholderia cenocepacia. We found that P. aeruginosa exhibited significan

All-hazards dataset mined from the US National Incident Management System 1999-2020.

This paper describes a dataset mined from the public archive (1999-2020) of the US National Incident Management System Incident Status Summary (ICS-209) forms (a total of 187,160 reports for 35,170 incidents, including 34,478 wildland fires). This system captures detailed daily/regular information on incident development and response, including social and economic impacts. Most (98.4%) reports are wildland fire-related, with other incident types including hurricane, hazardous materials, flood, tornado, search and rescue, civil unrest, and winter storms. The archive, although publicly available

Talcott Parsons on building personality system theory via psychoanalysis.

This article examines Talcott Parsons's efforts at building the theory of personality system as a special case of his general theory of action and places those efforts in historical context. I demonstrate how, during the middle decades of the twentieth century, Parsons employed elements of classic Freudian thought to advance a new appreciation of the personality system and its relations to other action systems. I begin with an overview of the reception of psychoanalysis at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Harvard Department of Social

Explainable Depression Detection Based on Facial Expression Using LSTM on Attentional Intermediate Feature Fusion with Label Smoothing.

Machine learning is used for a fast pre-diagnosis approach to prevent the effects of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The objective of this research is to detect depression using a set of important facial features extracted from interview video, e.g., radians, gaze at angles, action unit intensity, etc. The model is based on LSTM with an attention mechanism. It aims to combine those features using the intermediate fusion approach. The label smoothing was presented to further improve the model's performance. Unlike other black-box models, the integrated gradient was presented as the model expla

Anxious, Depressed, and Suicidal: Crisis Narratives in University Student Mental Health and the Need for a Balanced Approach to Student Wellness.

There is growing global awareness of the poor mental health of university students, as well as the need to improve students' access to services and expand the range of available evidence-based interventions. However, a crisis narrative is emerging, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, that runs the risk of positioning all students as potential patients in need of formal psychiatric interventions. Our aim in this commentary is to critically present the evidence that supports increased attention to student mental health, while also raising a concern that the crisis narrative may it

Cognitive profile in adult women with turner syndrome: IQ split and associations with ADHD and ASD.

INTRODUCTION: The behavioural phenotype in Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with an uneven cognitive profile and social and executive difficulties. Still, studies in adult populations of TS are scarce, and the interactions between different behavioural domains are unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the cognitive profile in relation to measures of ADHD and ASD in a Swedish sample of 30 adult women with TS. METHODS: Standardized psychological tests and questionnaires were used for behavioural assessments in a sample of adult women with a diagnosis of TS (n = 30). Both frequentist a

Sexual dimorphism in synaptic inputs to the mouse amygdala and orbital cortex.

The medial amygdala (MeA) is a sexually dimorphic brain region that regulates fear responses, emotional memories, and social behaviors. It is known to be larger and contains more cells in males. The MeA integrates information through input connections from olfactory regions, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, ventral hippocampus, and thalamic and hypothalamic structures. We hypothesize that in addition to the size differences, there are differences in regional connectivity between the sexes. In this study, we utilized G-deleted rabies monosynaptic retrograde tracing to compare amygdala presy

Measuring the Influence of Curricular Content and Personal Stories on Substance Use Stigma.

BACKGROUND: Understanding of the lived experience is an important educational strategy for improving attitudes toward stigmatized patient groups. This study evaluated the influence of a personal story intervention on nursing students' attitudes toward people who use opioids and measured attitudinal change from students' regular mental health and addictions curriculum. METHOD: This study used a single-group longitudinal design. Stigma outcomes were measured using the Opening Minds Provider Attitudes Toward Opioid Use Scale. Mean scores were analyzed for four time periods: control, social conta

Educators as Health and Education Mediators for African Asylum Seekers in Israel.

Israel is not isolated from the global migration process. It is required to provide a medical, educational, and socio-cultural response to the integration of tens of thousands of African asylum seekers. This qualitative-phenomenological study collected data from 15 educators as a primary source and learned about their actions to mediate health and educational issues for African asylum seekers. The findings reveal four categories: (1) a healthy lifestyle; (2) emotional-behavioral; (3) learning disabilities and special needs; (4) diseases, vaccines, and medical treatments. It seems that educator

A Review of Commercial and Non-Commercial Wearables Devices for Monitoring Motor Impairments Caused by Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are among the 10 causes of death worldwide. The effects of NDDs, including irreversible motor impairments, have an impact not only on patients themselves but also on their families and social environments. One strategy to mitigate the pain of NDDs is to early identify and remotely monitor related motor impairments using wearable devices. Technological progress has contributed to reducing the hardware complexity of mobile devices while simultaneously improving their efficiency in terms of data collection and processing and energy consumption. However, perhaps t

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural America.

Despite considerable social scientific attention to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on urbanized areas, very little research has examined its impact on rural populations. Yet rural communities-which make up tens of millions of people from diverse backgrounds in the United States-are among the nation's most vulnerable populations and may be less resilient to the effects of such a large-scale exogenous shock. We address this critical knowledge gap with data from a new survey designed to assess the impacts of the pandemic on health-related and economic dimensions of rural well-being in the N
