BACKGROUND: In the realm of thoracic surgery, addressing chest wall defects accompanied by infections remains a formidable task. Despite the availability of a spectrum of surgical options, attaining clinical resolution is particularly challenging in intricate cases involving extensive chest wall defects in elderly patients. Thorough debridement followed by the utilization of autologous tissue for repair and reconstruction has emerged as a prevalent approach in current clinical practice.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a 72-year-old female patient with a large chest wall defect and infec

INTRODUCTION: We are presenting a case with bilateral scaphoid proximal nonunion which was treated by arthroscopic bone grafting and fixation, done concurrently at the same setting by two wrist surgeons adept in wrist arthroscopy. Our report describes the set up for the operation and the technique involved in arthroscopic bone grafting of proximal pole scaphoid nonunions.
METHODS: An 18-year-old male presented to the clinic with bilateral longstanding wrist pain. Imaging of both hands revealed a nonunited proximal pole scaphoid fracture with some signs of ischemia in the scaphoid bones of bot

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare disorder characterized by the deposition of bone in soft tissues, known as heterotopic ossification (HO). This post hoc analysis compared the performance of two imaging modalities for the detection and volumetric measurement of new HO lesions. LUMINA-1, a phase 2, randomized, double-blind study (NCT03188666), evaluated the safety and efficacy of garetosmab, an anti-activin A antibody, versus placebo in adult patients with FOP. From baseline through to week 28, 18F-labeled sodium fluoride positron emission tomography (PET)/X-ray compu

With an incidence of approximately 42 per 100,000 persons annually, patellar instability is a debilitating condition that can result in dysfunction of the normal patellar tracking and potential cartilage damage. The stability of the patellofemoral (PF) joint involves an intricate relationship between muscular forces, soft tissues, trochlear and patellar geometry, and limb alignment. Several anatomic patellar risk factors (APRFs) have been identified including patella alta (Caton Deschamps >1.2; Insall-Salvati >1.2), rotational malalignment (femoral anteversion >30°, knee rotation >10°, and tib

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomic models are valuable clinical tools that facilitate enhanced visualization of pertinent anatomic structures and have demonstrated benefits of reduced surgical times, increased surgeon confidence, and improved operative results and subsequent patient outcomes. Medical image-based 3D printed anatomic models are generally created from computed tomography (CT), however magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which offers exquisite soft tissue characterization and flexible contrast avoiding the use of ionizing radiation, is an attractive

INTRODUCTION: Benign esophageal tumors are uncommon, accounting for approximately 2% of esophageal tumors. Esophageal schwannoma is a much rarer solid tumor with few cases reported in the literature. Open surgery is the surgical approach of choice for the treatment of esophageal tumors. With the advent of thoracoscopy, more and more countries are adopting a thoracoscopic approach to treat esophageal tumors, but there is still no clear surgical standard or modality for the treatment of esophageal tumors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital. Over the past 2 months

Clostridial myonecrosis, commonly known as gas gangrene (GG), is a rapidly progressing and potentially fatal bacterial infection that primarily affects muscle and soft tissue. In the United States, the incidence of GG is roughly 1000 cases per year, while, in developing countries, the incidence is higher. This condition is most often caused by Clostridium perfringens, a Gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium widely distributed in the environment, although other Clostridium species have also been reported to cause GG. The CP genome contains over 200 transport-related genes, including

Objective. Range uncertainty in proton therapy is an important factor limiting clinical effectiveness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can measure voxel-wise molecular composition and, when combined with kilovoltage CT (kVCT), accurately determine mean ionization potential (Im), electron density, and stopping power ratio (SPR). We aimed to develop a novel MR-based multimodal method to accurately determine SPR and molecular compositions. This method was evaluated in tissue-mimicking andex vivoporcine phantoms, and in a brain radiotherapy patient.Approach. Four tissue-mimicking phantoms with kn

INTRODUCTION: Massive thymic hyperplasia (MTH) is a very rare entity, with fewer than 20 cases reported in the literature in infancy. Most patients have respiratory symptoms and the enlarged thymus gland occupies one side of the thoracic cavity. Posterolateral thoracotomy or median sternotomy is the main treatment for MTH in infants. We report a case of an infant with MTH in which the enlarged thymus occupied his bilateral thoracic cavity and he underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). In addition, we reviewed and summarized the relevant literature.

RATIONALE: Salivary gland tumors account for approximately 3% of all tumors, most of which are benign, with pleomorphic adenomas being the most common, occurring mostly in middle-aged women, mostly originating from the major salivary glands and, to a lesser extent, from the minor salivary glands, with the tongue being a very rare site of occurrence. To date, case reports of pleomorphic adenoma at the root of the tongue are also rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old male patient with no obvious cause of foreign body sensation in the pharynx, sputum, no pain, no blood in the sputum, no dysphagi

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used as an adjunct to spinal soft tissue evaluation in cervical spine (C-spine) trauma; however, the utility of this information remains controversial. In this consecutive observational study, we reviewed the utility of MRI in patients with C-spine trauma.
METHODS: We identified patients in real time over a 2-year period as they presented to our level 1 trauma center for C-spine computed tomography (CT) scan followed by MRI. MRI was obtained by the trauma team prior to the spine service consultation if (1) they were unable to clear

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral thigh free flap is an option for repairing soft tissue defects of the distal lower extremity. This flap uses the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral (LCF) artery as the flap vessel. The recipient vessel in these flaps is often the anterior tibial (AT), posterior tibial (PT), or peroneal (P) arteries. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) evaluation of anastomoses between these vessels can optimize outcomes.
METHODS: Thirty-eight CFD models were created to model end-to-side (ETS) and end-to-end (ETE) anastomoses for lower extremity reconstruction. Seve

In the management of the non-specific purulent inflammation of the cervical lymph nodes in children, not only surgical treatment to evacuate the available pus but also antibacterial therapy is mandatory. Knowledge of the spectrum of the bacterial causative agents of this disease is of fundamental importance for it. This retrospective study included 66 patients with purulent inflammation of the cervical lymph nodes with a mean age of 5.79 years, ranging from 29 days to 17 years, who were hospitalized for the period 2015-2022 in the three pediatric clinics at the St. Marina University Multispeci
