OBJECTIVE: To analyse the pattern of gene expression at the messenger RNA level during ocular inflammation in the rabbit.
DESIGN: A gene screen assay was used to quantify specific binding over background (expression index) of various activation markers and cytokines in rabbit iris-ciliary body obtained during active experimental uveitis induced by injection of porcine lens protein (two animals) and in a control group (two animals).

Changes in cerebral blood oxygenation due to functional activation of the primary sensorimotor cortex during a unilateral finger opposition task were simultaneously mapped by deoxyhemoglobin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The levels of lead and cadmium were determined in deciduous teeth (incisors only) of children living in Stolberg and some other cities located in North-Rhine-Westfalia, Germany. The dietary intake of arsenic and mercury by 47 children (aged 5-8 years) living in West-Germany (Duisburg) is reported. Duplicate portions of all food and beverages were obtained on 2 days. An improved spectrophotometric method is described for the determination of thiocyanate in plasma and urine. Thiocyanate is adsorbed on a weak anion-exchange resin with strong affinity for chaotropic ions, and eluted with perchlorate. OBJECTIVE: PMR/GCA is a relatively common inflammatory disease in the elderly population. Clinical differentiation from a polymyalgic onset of RA in the elderly can be difficult. We have examined in a preliminary study the hypothesis that serum cytidine deaminase (CD) may be valuable in the differential diagnosis of these disorders.

Information on the variation in carcinogenicity with wavelength is crucial in risk assessments for skin cancers induced by UV radiation. Until recently the wavelength (lambda) dependencies of other detrimental UV effects, such as sunburn, have been used as substitutes.
