OBJECTIVE: To report the long-term outcomes of augmentation ileocystoplasty (AIC) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), with a minimum follow-up period of 10 years.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed all operations performed by a single surgeon at a specialist spinal unit. Outcomes were measured by comparing preoperative and follow-up videocystometrograms (VCMGs). Complications were identified from case notes and the surgery database. Subjective assessment was through a previously validated questionnaire.
RESULTS: The mean (range) follow-up was 14.7 (10.5-20.3) years. The

BACKGROUND: Motor unit firing frequencies are low during maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of human thenar muscles impaired by cervical spinal cord injury (SCI).
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether thenar motor unit firing frequencies increase when driven by both maximal voluntary drive and other concurrent inputs compared with an MVC alone.
METHODS: Motor unit firing rates, force, and surface electromyographic activity (EMG) were compared across 2 contractions: (a) MVC alone and (b) MVC combined with another input (combination contraction). Other inputs (conditions) included

The effects of acrobatic exercise and magnetic stimulation (MS) in mice applied either separately or in combination while on recovery after spinal cord injury have been investigated. This progress has been compared in six groups of animals. The first two groups consisted of non-injured and injured animals, respectively, which were not exposed to any treatment. The third group included injured animals that participated in an acrobatic exercise and were exposed to MS applied at the frequency of 1 Hz. The animals in the fourth group were exposed to the MS (1 Hz) only, without performing any acrob

Study design:Disturbance of gastrointestinal motility following acute spinal cord injury complicated with paraplegia can lead to bacterial overgrowth in the gastrointestinal tract, and increase the incidence of bacterial translocation. Experiments in a New Zealand rabbit model of acute spinal cord injury were performed. Objective:This study was designed to determine if the electrical stimulation of the sacral nerve prevents gut-origin bacterial translocation and endotoxemia in an animal model of acute spinal cord injury.Settings:Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Hunan, PR China.Method

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid, alleviates spasticity in people with spinal cord injury (SCI).
DESIGN: A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study.
SETTING: Outpatient rehabilitation clinics.
PARTICIPANTS: We recruited volunteers (N=12) with SCI and spasticity. One subject, a paraplegic man, dropped out of the study because of an unrelated cause. The purpose of this study was to compare the forces and moments of the whole upper limb, analyzing forces and moments at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints simultaneously during manual wheelchair propulsion of persons with different levels of spinal cord injury (SCI) on a treadmill. Fifty-one people participated in this study and were grouped by their level of SCI: C6 tetraplegia (G1), C7 tetraplegia (G2), high paraplegia (G3), and low paraplegia (G4). An inverse dynamic model was defined to compute net joint forces and moments from segment kinematics, the forces acting on the pushrim, and s

Although spasticity has been defined as an increase in velocity-dependent stretch reflexes and muscle hypertonia during passive movement, the measurement of flexor muscle paresis may better characterize the negative impact of this syndrome on residual motor function following incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI). In this longitudinal study Tibialis Anterior (TA) muscle paresis produced by a loss in maximal voluntary contraction during dorsiflexion and ankle flexor muscle coactivation during ramp-and-hold controlled plantarflexion was measured in ten patients during subacute iSCI. Tibialis Ante

Axonal regeneration and functional recovery after complete spinal cord injury (SCI) are limited in adult mammals. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an innovative composite matrix made from a denuded human amniotic membrane (DHAM) seeded with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) could promote axonal regeneration after SCI. We transplanted the composite matrix between the stumps of severed spinal cords immediately following SCI. Twelve weeks after surgery, the functional recovery of the hindlimbs of operated rats was evaluated by the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating

Thirty-seven adults with spinal-cord injury and chronic pain were randomly assigned to receive 10 sessions of self-hypnosis (HYP) or EMG biofeedback relaxation (BIO) training for pain management. Participants in both treatment conditions reported substantial, but similar, decreases in pain intensity from before to after the treatment sessions. However, participants in the HYP condition, but not the BIO condition, reported statistically significant decreases in daily average pain pre- to posttreatment. These pre- to posttreatment decreases in pain reported by the HYP participants were maintaine

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of knee-tendon to bladder artificial reflex arc in dogs.
METHODS: In 6 beagles, the proximal end of the right L5 anterior motor root and the distal end of the right S2 anterior root were anastomosed to build a knee-tendon to bladder reflex, whereas the right L5 posterior sensory root was kept intact. Action potential (AP) curves and electromyograms (EMGs) of the detrusor muscle, the intravesical pressure, horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled neurons, and the passing rates of myelinic nerve fibers were calculated to evaluate its feasibility.
