We evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of adding 9 Gy of total body irradiation (TBI), in three single daily fractions of 3 Gy, to the reduced intensity regimen of fludarabine 30 mg/m2 i.v. x 4 days and melphalan 140 mg/m2 i.v. x 1 day in advanced pediatric hematologic malignancies. Irrigation of periodontal pockets with fluoride solution after scaling and root planing is occasionally recommended to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the periodontal pocket. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to determine if an association exists between hepatitis C virus and oral lichen planus.
STUDY DESIGN: Three groups of subjects were selected: 505 patients with hepatitis C virus infection (group 1), 100 patients with oral lichen planus (group 2), and a randomly selected control group (age- and gender-matched) of 100 healthy subjects (group 3). The prevalence of oral lichen planus was determined in groups 1 and 3, and the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection was established in groups 2 and 3.

BACKGROUND: No effective systemic salvage therapy exists for patients with advanced colorectal cancer who progress after receiving bolus fluorouracil (FU) and leucovorin (LV) chemotherapy. In vitro data suggest that bolus FU resistance can be overcome by continuous infusion (CI) FU, and that the cytotoxic effects of Mitomycin-C (MMC) and FU are synergistic. A prospective, double-blind study compared the effectiveness of sucralfate suspension with diphenhydramine syrup plus kaolin-pectin in reducing severity and pain of radiation-induced oropharyngeal mucositis. Fourteen patients who received at least 4600 cGy to the oral cavity used one of the mouth rinses four times a day, beginning at 1600 cGy.
