The fast spread of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a huge workload burden. Health care workers have become a particular risk group for developing mental health symptoms, with women being the most affected group according to preliminary data. The aim of this study was to provide information about the prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in female physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic and describe risk factors associated with them. Using a cross-sectional design, we applied an online questionnaire to 303 female physicians inquiring ab

The neuropathology associated with cognitive decline in military personnel exposed to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and chronic stress is incompletely understood. Few studies have examined clinicopathologic correlations between phosphorylated-tau neurofibrillary tangles, β-amyloid neuritic plaques, neuroinflammation, or white matter (WM) lesions, and neuropsychiatric disorders in veterans. We describe clinicopathologic findings in 4 military veterans with early-onset dementia (EOD) who had varying histories of blunt- and blast-TBI, cognitive decline, behavioral abnormalities, post-traumatic str

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 outbreak have a long-term negative impact on mental health. Meanwhile, it may also provide opportunities for positive outcomes (e.g., post-traumatic growth). Resilience and social support could serve as psychological resources to protect individuals against the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 crisis and enable people to develop positive changes during challenging times.
OBJECTIVE: By testing the roles of resilience and social support in the relationship between COVID-19 related stress and negative mental health outcomes (depression and anxiety), as well as the relatio

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic neck pain is common, representing a substantial human and societal burden. About 15%-25% of individuals involved in an accident causing whiplash continue to experience moderate-to-severe symptoms and functional impairment 1 year post-trauma. Factors such as age, high pain intensity, hypersensitivity to pain and early post-traumatic hyperarousal are associated with persistent neck pain. However, multiple questions remain unanswered regarding how best to improve early care. As such, research on recovery patterns (including indicators for health economic burden) and t

This case report describes a highly complicated case with combined chronic pain, substance use disorder (SUD) and social challenges following war participation in Ukraine. The patient had developed PTSD and SUD because of pain management and was enrolled in dual diagnosis treatment in out-patient psychiatry. The patient successfully transitioned to long-acting buprenorphine leading to better pain management and remission in SUD, improving both treatment relation and clinical treatment of PTSD by use of integrated dual diagnosis treatment.

The current study assessed how mental health outcomes and related risk factors varied by proximity to the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas among a community sample from Ofakim, a town in southern Israel. Established cutoff scores on self-report measures of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were used to estimate disorder prevalence rates. Background and trauma exposure were examined as risk factors in areas that differed in geographical proximity to the attacks. Participants were randomly sampled from two areas in Ofak

Burns have profound impacts on long-term psychiatric health. This retrospective cohort study aims to explore the relationship between biological sex and psychiatric morbidities among burned patients. Adult patients with burn injuries (≥18 years) from 2004 to 2024 were stratified by the biological sex using the TriNetX United States Collaborative Network database. Patients were propensity matched based on age, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, total body surface area, and region of burn injury. Outcomes examined included posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, suicidal

OBJECTIVE: Trauma exposure is associated with elevated risk for psychotic-like experiences, including subthreshold hallucinations and delusions. Dissociative symptoms may link these two experiences and warrant further exploration.
METHOD: The present study examined if dissociative symptoms accounted for additional variance in the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and hallucinations and delusions in a sample of patients (n = 63) seeking treatment for PTSD using the Dissociative Subtype of PTSD Scale; PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines recent evidence for the effectiveness of telehealth in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), alcohol use disorder, and insomnia in military veterans and active-duty service members (ADSMs).
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies provide strong evidence that synchronous video-teleconference based therapy is effective for PTSD, MDD, and insomnia in this population. There is growing evidence for the effectiveness of internet-based self-guided therapy, particularly when

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the most researched psychological therapy for anxiety disorders in adults, and known to be effective in this population. However, it remains unclear whether these results apply to older adults, as most studies include participants between 18 and 55 years of age. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of the available evidence on CBT and third wave approaches for older adults with anxiety and related disorders.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CT, BT, CBT and third-wav

AIM: Adverse childhood experiences are potentially traumatic events with long-lasting effects on the health and well-being of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is important to clarify which types of long-lasting autism-related symptoms are influenced by childhood experiences to design future intervention studies. However, few studies have examined the association between childhood experiences and autistic symptoms in large samples of adults with ASD and individuals with typical development (TD). In this study, we evaluate the effects of adverse childhood experiences on multiple

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is known to be an effective treatment for the anxiety and related disorders, with exposure therapy being a key component of this treatment package. However, research on the use of exposure therapy in clinical practice has presented mixed results, potentially due to differences in samples and training programs across countries. The present study aimed to extend upon existing research by examining the use and predictors of use of exposure therapy in a sample of psychologists working in clinical practice in Australia who treat clients with an anxiety d

In this study, we examined the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 3800 psychiatric outpatients with different principal diagnoses. For all disorders identified as a principal diagnosis, we compared patients' odds ratios of PTSD to all other patients in the sample. Approximately one-sixth of the sample (n = 663, 17.4%) was diagnosed with PTSD, including 417 patients with current PTSD and 246 with PTSD in partial remission. Patients with principal bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD) demonstrated higher rates of PTSD compared with those without principal bipola

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to violent victimization is associated with higher rates of mental health and substance use disorders (SUD). Some youth who experience multiple victimizations and associated characteristics (i.e. poly-victims) are at heightened risk for long term problems. Thus, we conducted the first study to examine how heterogeneity in experiences of victimization vary in terms of latency to illicit drug use following treatment completion. We also examined if victimization profiles vary across gender and if comorbid conditions (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive dis

Exposure therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment technique for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Regardless, therapists in the community are reported to use exposure relatively rarely compared with other approaches. The goal of the present study was to identify how practicing clinicians treat youth with anxiety disorders across the United States and what factors contribute to their use of exposure therapy. Recruited from public directories, 257 private practice therapists who treat anxious youth were surveyed. Non-exposure cognitive-behavioral techniques like cog

BACKGROUND: History of traumatic experience is common in dissociative disorder (DD), and similarity of symptoms and characteristics between DD and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encouraged to consider DD as trauma-related disorder. However, conceptualization of DD as a trauma-related syndrome would critically affect diagnosis and treatment strategies. The present study addressed overlap and disparity of DD and PTSD by directly comparing correspondence of symptoms, adverse/traumatic experience, and altered affect regulation between patients diagnosed with dissociative disorder (characteri

OBJECTIVE: Headache is one of the most common disorders and has a heavy socioeconomic burden on both patients and society. Previous studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of psychological issues (e.g. depression and anxiety) in headache and especially migraine patients. The current study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in chronic migraine (CM), chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) and healthy subjects.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: CM and CTTH subjects were selected consecutively from patients referring to the department of neurolog

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid (Elhai et al., 2008. J. Clin. Psychiatry, 69, (4), 597-602). Rumination is a cognitive mechanism found to exacerbate and maintain both PTSD and MDD (Elwood et al., 2009. Clin. Psychol. Rev. 29, (1), 87-100; Olatunji et al., 2013. Clin. Psychol.: Sci. Pract. 20, (3), 225-257).
AIMS: Assess whether four rumination subtypes moderate the relationship between comorbid PTSD and MDD symptoms.
METHOD: We consecutively sampled patients (N=45) presenting to a mental health clinic using self-report
