Prospective association between pro-inflammatory state on admission and posttraumatic stress following acute coronary syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The traumatic experience of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) may induce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We examined whether the ACS-triggered acute inflammatory response predicts the development of PTSD symptoms. METHOD: Study participants were 70 patients (all Caucasian, 80% male, mean age 59 years) with myocardial infarction (MI) during the acute treatment phase. Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-4, IL-10, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-1β were determined in plasma collected within 48 h of hospital admission. Participants self-asses

Epidemiology and factors associated with acute stress disorder in burned patients: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: A burn injury is a very painful experience, with subsequent emotional problems, which have been gaining relevance to the extent that survival from burns has improved. Among the alterations of the mental sphere in this population is Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) that has been described in up to one-third of patients with major burns. METHODOLOGY: A nested case-control study was carried out in a cohort of hospitalized patients in a burn referral unit, in patients over 16 years of age. A total of 135 patients, 41 cases, and 94 controls were included. All of them underwent a psychiatr

Should Catatonia Be Conceptualized as a Pathological Response to Trauma?

Although catatonia is related to several medical conditions, catatonia as a response to trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is less clear. The aim of this review is to explore the small emerging body of preliminary evidence that suggests a possible correlation between psychological trauma and catatonia. Initial data suggests a correlation between episodes of intense fear associated with trauma and PTSD and some forms of catatonic responses. Although this relationship is still speculative to be causative, it can have important implications if confirmed. This is especially salient wh

Associations between post-traumatic growth and wisdom in people with long-term paraplegia - the role of disability appraisals and participation.

PURPOSE: The number of people with long-term spinal cord injury (SCI) is growing but our knowledge about their successful functioning is still limited. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlations between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and wisdom in people with long-term paraplegia, exploring the mediating effect of disability appraisals, and participation/autonomy (P/A). METHODS: One-hundred and sixty-six persons with paraplegia completed a set of questionnaires, which included: The three-dimensional Wisdom Scale; The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory; Appraisals of Disability Primar

Why Do Women Talk About It? Reasons for Disclosure of Sexual Victimization and Associated Symptomology.

Many sexual victimization survivors disclose their experience; however, there is limited research investigating why women disclose this experience and how reasons relate to psychopathology. The current online study aims to further understand the experiences of 142 female survivors (aged 18-29 years) by identifying their reason for disclosure and investigating how reasons relate to self-reported depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology. Qualitative analyses identified two reasons: intentional and elicited disclosures. Hierarchical linear regressions revealed that elicit

Tragedy in Haiti: Suicidality, PTSD, and Depression Associated with Intimate Partner Violence Among Haitian Women After the 2010 Earthquake.

Across the world, suicidal behaviors are responsible for more than one million deaths each year. In Haiti, suicidal behaviors were found to be related to intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. This study was conducted after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and women were asked about IPV before and after that event. A sample of women between 18 and 44 years of age responded to a questionnaire about physical, psychological, or sexual abuse by an intimate or non-intimate partner. The women were divided into two groups: (a) women who were abused by partners (n = 133) and (b) women who were not

Comparison of latent typologies of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms across military personnel from India and the US.

Research has identified heterogeneous subgroups of individuals based on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms. Using data collected from military personnel in India (N = 146) and U.S. (N = 194), we examined (1) the best-fitting latent class solution; (2) multi-group invariance of the class solution; and (3) construct validity of optimal class solution. Results indicated that the optimal 4-class solution differed in severity and severity/type in the India and U.S. samples respectively. With similarity in the optimal number of classes across cultural samples, the meaning/n

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of the PTSD Coach App Following Motor Vehicle Crash-related Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms (PTSS) are common after minor injuries and can impair recovery. We sought to understand whether an evidence-based mobile phone application with self-help tools (PTSD Coach) could be useful to improve recovery after acute trauma among injured emergency department (ED) patients. This pilot study examined the feasibility, acceptability, and potential benefit of using PTSD Coach among acutely injured motor vehicle crash (MVC) patients. METHODS: From September 2017 to September 2018, we recruited adult patients within 24 hours post-MVC from

Adolescent risk substance use behavior, posttraumatic stress, depression, and resilience: Innovative considerations for disaster recovery.

Natural and technological disasters cause long-term psychological trauma and increase substance use in adults. It is unclear whether these problems also occur in children and whether trauma influences long-term psychological outcomes due to developmental stages at the time of trauma. One community of interest is located in southeastern Louisiana, where, as children, many locals were exposed to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. We hypothesized individuals exposed to these disasters in early childhood would exhibit higher rates of anxiety, depression, and alc

Military psychologists and cultural competence: exploring implications for the manifestation and treatment of psychological trauma in the British armed forces.

This paper considers the manifestation and treatment of psychological trauma in the military. The article describes how military psychologists conceptualise psychological trauma within the culture of the Armed Forces (AF), which is reflected in the process of acquiring what has been referred to as cultural competency. Psychologists in this context acquire an understanding of the manner in which the psychological and organisational systems and culture of the military affect the presentation of psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The paper outlines core psychol

The Indirect Effect of Coping Self-Efficacy on the Relation Between Sexual Violence and PTSD Symptoms.

One in five women experience rape and one in four experience unwanted sexual contact, incurring significant risk of negative psychological outcomes such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Given this heightened risk, it is imperative to examine factors that can inhibit the development of PTSD symptoms in response to sexual violence in women. Perceived coping self-efficacy (CSE) is a cognitive appraisal ability utilized to regulate internal and external stressors that arise from traumatic events and is crucial for effective adaptation after traumas such as sexual violence. This study inves

Increasing self-efficacy reduces visual intrusions to a trauma-film paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It has been proposed that self-efficacy plays a critical role in the onset and maintenance of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to test if increasing perceptions of self-efficacy using a false feedback technique about coping abilities prior to a trauma-film paradigm lead to a reduction of visual intrusions over the course of 6 days. DESIGN AND METHODS: Healthy participants recruited from the community were randomized to a high self-efficacy (HSE, N = 18), low self-efficacy (LSE, N = 21), or neutral self-efficacy (NSE, N = 23) conditions. Direct and indirect effects of mindfulness, PTSD, and depression on self-stigma of mental illness in OEF/OIF veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Two of the most common and costly mental health diagnoses among military veterans who served in the post-9/11 conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq are posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, but over half of veterans who screen positive for these problems do not seek treatment. A key barrier is self-stigma of mental illness. Mindfulness has shown promise as an explanatory variable in the context of mental health symptoms and self-stigma, but these associations are underexplored in the veterans' literature. This study examines direct and indirect effects among mindfulness,

Gender Differences in the Violence Exposure Types That Predict PTSD and Depression in Adolescents.

Both specific forms of violence and polyvictimization have been associated with an increased risk for negative mental health outcomes in youth. Despite evidence of gender differences in trauma experience and impact, gender patterns in the comparative contribution of specific violence exposures versus polyvictimization to mental health outcomes have seldom been explored. The few existing studies have all been conducted in high-income countries, while there is a dearth of research from lower and middle-income countries. This study examined the contribution of witnessed and direct community viole

Trauma Does Not Predict Patients' Experiences With Constant Observation.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about which patient factors are associated with a positive or negative experience of constant observation (CO) in a general hospital or emergency department. We hypothesized that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) would predict a more negative experience with CO. METHODS: A survey regarding the positive and negative aspects of being observed by a staff member was administered to 83 patients who were admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit after experiencing CO; 55 of these patients had a history of trauma and 13 were diagnosed with PTSD. A total score reflecting

What Therapies are Favored in the Treatment of the Psychological Sequelae of Trauma in Human Trafficking Victims?

Human trafficking is a major public health concern that brings about deleterious psychological consequences and sequelae. Although a number of risk and protective factors for the health consequences of human trafficking victims have been identified, there is a dearth of information in the area of treatment. Specifically, we found no articles comparing the different components of prevailing trauma treatment strategies, and the potential usefulness of these strategies in the treatment of human trafficking victims. To this end, we compared and contrasted the different therapeutic treatments typic

Borrowing Benefits: Group Treatment With Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques Is Associated With Simultaneous Reductions in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression Symptoms.

Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an evidence-based treatment for depression and anxiety. The current study sought to elucidate the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety in a nonclinical population. The sample (N = 81) comprised participants at five 2-day EFT workshops. All groups used an EFT protocol called Borrowing Benefits, in which the group facilitator works with a single client while other participants self-apply EFT. Participants were assessed on 9 specific conditions as well as on the breadth (Positive Symptom Total [PST]) and

Effects of trauma and PTSD on self-reported physical functioning in sexual minority women.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority women (lesbians, bisexual women, and women who partner with women) experience high rates of trauma exposure, are more likely to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and have high rates of physical health problems compared with heterosexual women. The present study tested whether PTSD may be the mechanism through which trauma exposure affects self-reported physical functioning in this population. METHOD: In a sample of 857 sexual minority women, we examined the association between trauma exposure and worsening physical functioning (measured using the 12-item

Coping with Fear of and Exposure to Terrorism among Expatriates.

This paper examines existing research on the impact of terrorism on expatriate coping strategies. We consider pre-assignment fear of terrorism, in-country coping strategies, and anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with repatriation. The extant research is small but growing. Our model for expatriate coping at the pre-departure, in-country, and repatriation stages includes strategies specific to each stage. Preparation using proactive coping, systematic desensitization, problem and emotion focused coping, social support, and virtual reality explorations are recommended. S

Collective narrative practice with unaccompanied refugee minors: "The Tree of Life" as a response to hardship.

During the summer of 2016, in the midst of one of the biggest refugee crises in centuries, the author of this article joined the team from a shelter for unaccompanied refugee minors on Samos, Greece, in an effort to provide young boys seeking asylum in Europe with an opportunity to engage in speaking about the difficulties they have encountered in life. The team used a collective narrative methodology called the "Tree of Life", originally developed by Ncube-Mlilo and Denborough. In addition to traditional psychological treatments, collective narrative practice creates a secure foundation for a
