Effects of FKBP5 on Stroke Outcome in Mice and Men: A Translational Study.

BACKGROUND: FKBP5 (FK506-binding protein 51, protein), encoded by the FKBP5 (gene, human), is a glucocorticoid receptor-regulating cochaperone. FKBP5 has been suggested as a mediator between stress, vascular morbidity, and neuropsychiatric complications. In this translational proof-of-concept study, we investigated the impact of FKBP5 on stroke outcome in mice and men. METHODS: Fkbp5 (gene, mouse) knockout and wild-type mice were subjected to transient brain ischemia. Lesion volume was assessed at 48 hours after stroke using magnetic resonance imaging. Circulating corticosterone level and adr…

Endometrial carcinoma in a patient with post-stroke sequelae: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Endometrial cancer is a common gynecologic malignancy, and surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment. Perioperative complications such as malnutrition and venous thrombosis highlight the importance of comprehensive nursing care. Stroke sequelae, including hemiplegia, dysphagia, and impaired language function, further complicate management, especially when occurring simultaneously. However, reports addressing perioperative care in such patients are scarce. This study summarizes the perioperative nursing experience of a patient with endometrial cancer complicated by post…

No-reflow in acute ischemic stroke: mechanisms, measurements, and molecular markers.

BACKGROUND: No-reflow is a critical microvascular phenomenon in acute ischemic stroke in which patients fail to achieve adequate tissue reperfusion despite successful recanalization of a large vessel occlusion. It affects at least 25% of patients after reperfusion and results from persistent microvascular dysfunction that prevents restoration of normal blood flow to ischemic tissue, leading to ongoing injury. OBJECTIVE: This paper synthesizes historical, mechanistic, diagnostic, and therapeutic perspectives on the no-reflow phenomenon to clarify its pathophysiology and highlight gaps limiting…

Intelligent prediction of dynamic characteristics during exercise in patients with stroke.

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimation of lower limb kinetic characteristics is critical for evaluating gait impairments and guiding rehabilitation in patients with stroke. Traditional three-dimensional (3D) optical motion capture systems provide high-precision measurements but are costly, require a laboratory environment, and are sensitive to marker placement errors. Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, combined with machine learning models, may offer a portable and clinically feasible alternative. METHODS: Thirty patients with stroke performed level walking and stair negotiation tasks while we…

Clinical outcomes in patients with muscle disorders and acute ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVES: Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity in the United States, which prompts an exploration into its associated risk factors. Muscle disorders have been linked to an increased risk of stroke; however, research on stroke prevalence and clinical outcomes in this population is limited by small sample sizes. Although the diagnostic and treatment protocols for acute ischemic stroke are largely identical in patients with and without muscle disorders, it remains unclear whether clinical outcomes differ. This study aimed to address this gap using a large, nationally representative dataset. …

The effectiveness of interventions to support informal stroke carers: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Stroke affects one in four adults in the UK, with over a third relying on informal carers. The burden of care can have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of carers, which may impact the rehabilitative process. Despite this, interventions have focused on the physical demands of caregiving, prioritising the stroke survivor. This review aimed to identify effective psychosocial interventions that reduce burden, strain, depression, or anxiety in informal stroke carers. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, the Coch…

A minimally invasive thrombotic model to study stroke in awake mice.

Experimental stroke models in rodents are essential for mechanistic studies and therapeutic development. However, these models have several limitations negatively impacting their translational relevance. Here we aimed to develop a minimally invasive thrombotic stroke model through magnetic particle delivery that does not require craniotomy, is amenable to reperfusion therapy, can be combined with in vivo imaging modalities, and can be performed in awake mice. We found that the model results in reproducible cortical infarcts within the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory with cytologic and i…

Epidemiological trends and forecasts in stroke at global, regional and national levels.

BACKGROUND: Stroke, characterized as ischemic or hemorrhagic, leads to severe morbidity, mortality, and recurrence. This research analyzed stroke epidemiological trends from 1990-2021. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease database provided stroke data including incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Age-standardized rates (ASRs) and Estimated Annual Percent Changes (EAPC) measured incidence and mortality shifts. The sociodemographic index (SDI) was explored alongside stroke burden. Forecasting of stroke trends until 2035 utilized the Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAP…
