A 49-year old employee of a drug store with neck pain, painful thyroid gland, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (38 mm/h) was diagnosed as subacute thyreoiditis (de Quervain). However, application of oral corticosteroids (prednisone 50 mg/d) during three days did not reduce pain as expected. Therefore, the patient was admitted for further evaluation. Clinical examination showed a female in a pain-relieving posture (forward neck flexion). A policy of palliative intent thoracic irradiation was prospectively evaluated in 38 consecutive patients referred for treatment of inoperable non-small cell lung cancer at a single institution. A target dose of 1700 cGy in two fractions 1 week apart was delivered. Characteristics of the treatment group revealed most (87%; 33/38) to be of good-excellent performance status with minimal weight loss before irradiation. The results of 319 cases of belt-restrained front seat car occupants (234 drivers and 85 passengers) from 241 vehicles in car-to-car head-on collisions were examined. Ninety-five occupants were uninjured, 195 sustained a total injury severity of Maximum Abbreviated Injury Score (MAIS) 1-3 and 29, MAIS 4-6. Of 1290 cases of hydatidosis hospitalized, 907 (70.3%) cases of hepatic hydatid cyst (HHC) were treated surgically (1954-1990). Of the 907 cases, 484 (53.3%) were males and 423 (46.7%) females. Since the scintillation camera enables us to include lower thorax in the views obtained during Tc-99m colloid imaging of the liver and spleen, intrathoracic pathology may be identified as relatively cold or hot areas in the thoracic cavity.
