More than 900 cases of scarlet fever were recorded in Hong Kong during January-July, 2011. Six cases were complicated by toxic shock syndrome, of which 2 were fatal. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns suggested a multiclonal epidemic; emm12 was the predominant circulating type. We recommend genetic testing of and antimicrobial resistance monitoring for this reportable disease.

PURPOSE: Rates of rectal toxicity after low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy for prostate cancer are dependent on rectal dose, which is associated with rectal distance from prostate and implanted seeds. Placement of a hydrogel spacer between the prostate and rectum has proven to reduce the volume of the rectum exposed to higher radiation dose levels in the setting of external beam radiotherapy. We present our findings with placing a rectal hydrogel spacer in patients following LDR brachytherapy, and we further assess the impact of this placement on dosimetry and acute rectal toxicity.

Hexahydro-2,3,4,3',4',5'-benzophenone (exifone, Adlone), a novel compound proposed for treating cognitive dysfunction in geriatric patients, was tested in a battery of standard psychopharmacological tests in the mouse. We tested in vivo anti-herpetic effect of castalagin, an ellagitannin compound, extracted from pedunculate oak (Quercus robur). Previous investigations found that castalagin possesses a strong inhibitory effect in vitro against HSV-1/2 equal to acyclovir (ACV). Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with aggregation of the human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) into cytotoxic amyloid species. Here we tested the effect of a diphenylpyrazole (DPP)-derived small molecule inhibitor, anle145c, on cytotoxicity and on aggregation properties of hIAPP.
