Adverse effects of outdoor pollution in the elderly.

With fewer newborns and people living longer, older people are making up an increasing fraction of the total population. Epidemiological evidence shows that older-age-related health problems affect a wide and expanding proportion of the world population. One of the major epidemiological trends of this century is the rise of chronic diseases that affect more elderly than younger people. A total of 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide in 2012 are attributable to outdoor air pollution; the susceptibility to adverse effects of air pollution is expected to differ widely between people and within

Quantifying the contribution of modifiable risk factors for progression of MGUS to multiple myeloma in a Veteran population.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the most common plasma cell dyscrasia in the United States with tremendously high burden. MM is preceded by a premalignant condition, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Although several risk factors for progression have been identified (e.g., older age, male sex, black race, obesity, chemical exposure), their relative contributions remain unclear. Unlike other malignancies, such evidence is lacking for MM despite its high burden. To identify potential intervention strategies that can effectively prevent progression in patients with MGUS, we quan

Vitamin D status and COVID-19 prevention in a worker subgroup in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Low levels of vitamin D are widespread in the world's population and associated with sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyles. Office workers in different occupational sectors seem more vulnerable than others. Scientific evidence reports a contribution of vitamin D in resistance to infections, opening to supplementation as a preventive action against pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: A pilot campaign in the workplace during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was conducted based on the preliminary measurement of vitamin D amount and its integration. METHODS: A preven

Estimating the Prevalence of LAMA2 Congenital Muscular Dystrophy using Population Genetic Databases.

BACKGROUND: Recessive pathogenic variants in LAMA2 resulting in complete or partial loss of laminin α2 protein cause congenital muscular dystrophy (LAMA2 CMD). The prevalence of LAMA2 CMD has been estimated by epidemiological studies to lie between 1.36-20 cases per million. However, prevalence estimates from epidemiological studies are vulnerable to inaccuracies owing to challenges with studying rare diseases. Population genetic databases offer an alternative method for estimating prevalence. OBJECTIVE: We aim to use population allele frequency data for reported and predicted pathogenic vari

Autonomic Characteristics of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy in Children-A Systematic Review of Studies and Their Relevance to the Management of Epilepsy in Rett Syndrome.

Aim: To systematically identify and critically appraise studies that investigate the autonomic characteristics of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) in the pediatric population. We also wanted to explore how this information would be relevant to the management of epilepsy in patients with Rett Syndrome. Method: Using PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, PsycINFO, Embase, and Web of Science databases was performed to identify eligible studies. After extracting data from the included studies, a thematic analysis was undertaken to identify emerging themes.

Risk factors for the mortality of hemodialysis patients with COVID-19: A multicenter study from the overall hemodialysis population in Wuhan.

INTRODUCTION: Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients are highly threatened in the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, but evidence of risk factors for mortality in this population is still lacking. METHODS: We followed outcomes of the overall MHD population of Wuhan, including 7154 MHD patients from 65 hemodialysis centers, from January 1 to May 4, 2020. Among them, 130 were diagnosed with COVID-19. The demographic and clinical data of them were collected and compared between survivors and nonsurvivors. RESULTS: Compared to the corresponding period of last year, the all-caus

Comparing the Ecological Niches of Chlamydial and Gonococcal Infections in Winnipeg, Canada: 2007-2016.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown substantial differences in geographic clustering of sexually transmitted infections (STI), such as chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (NG), conditional on epidemic phase. Chlamydia and NG have recently shown resurgent epidemiology in the northern hemisphere. This study describes the recent epidemiology of CT and NG in Winnipeg, Canada, combining traditional surveillance tools with place-based analyses, and comparing the ecological niches of CT and NG, in the context of their evolving epidemiology. METHODS: Data were collected as part of routine public health

Attribution of human Listeria monocytogenes infections in England and Wales to ready-to-eat food sources placed on the market: adaptation of the Hald Salmonella source attribution model.

Human listeriosis is a rare but serious foodborne disease, with high morbidity and mortality in vulnerable populations (e.g., pregnant women, the elderly, and the immunocompromised). The disease is predominantly caused by the consumption of contaminated ready-to-eat foods. Since 2001, an increase in the number of listeriosis cases has been observed in several European Union countries, including England and Wales, predominantly in the over-60s population. The cause of this selective increased incidence is unknown. The Hald Salmonella Bayesian source attribution model was adapted to determine th

School Readiness and Early Childhood Education and Care Services Among Dual Language Learners.

IMPORTANCE: Dual language learners (DLL) (ie, children learning 2 or more languages) present lower school readiness than non-DLL children, putting DLL children at risk of later school difficulties and adverse outcomes. However, it is unclear whether participation in early childhood education and care (ECEC) services may reduce this gap. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether ECEC exposure may reduce the school readiness gap between DLL and non-DLL children in a population-based sample. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This census survey study was performed from February to May 2022 in the Canadian p

Noteworthy trends in maladaptive coping strategies and hindrances to help-seeking behaviour among adolescents living in Malaysia's People's Housing Project (PPR) during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has greatly affected the population, especially those in the low socio-economic group, including residents of the People's Housing Project (PPR) in Malaysia. Adolescents residing in PPR communities are among the most vulnerable groups of young people in urban areas, given their pre-existing conditions of vulnerability, face even greater challenges due to the pandemic. Understanding their mental health and coping strategies is vital to grasp how the pandemic impacts their well-being. Hence, this study aims to explore the coping strategies and barriers to help-seeking behavi

Temporal vulnerability of fetal cerebellar Purkinje cells to chronic binge alcohol exposure: ovine model.

BACKGROUND: Human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and autopsy studies reveal abnormal cerebellar development in children who had been exposed to alcohol prenatally, independent of the exposure period. Animal studies conducted utilizing the rat model similarly demonstrate a broad period of vulnerability, albeit the third trimester-equivalent of human brain development is reported to be the most vulnerable period, and the first trimester-equivalent exposure produces cerebellar Purkinje cell loss only at high doses of alcohol. However, in the rat model, all 3 trimester-equivalents do not occur p

Homoacetogenic bioaugmentation with Clostridium magnum WY-4 enhances upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor resilience under progressive organic loading and short-term complex shock.

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors are widely used for treating high-strength organic wastewater but are vulnerable to short-term complex shocks caused by increased organic loading, hydraulic retention time regulation, and partial sludge loss. At the same time, the role of homoacetogenic bioaugmentation in improving UASB recovery after such disturbances remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the potential of a novel homoacetogenic strain, Clostridium magnum WY-4 (WY-4), to enhance UASB resilience. Two laboratory-scale UASB reactors were operated for 184 days, and reactor

Independent and interactive effects of traffic-related noise and air pollution on lung function: A randomized crossover study in healthy young adults.

Traffic noise and air pollution are major environmental stressors linked to adverse respiratory outcomes. We conducted a randomized crossover study in 51 healthy adults during evening rush hour beside a busy urban road to explore the independent and interactive effects of traffic noise and air pollution on lung function. Participants underwent four different interventions. For each intervention, noise levels and concentrations of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were monitored, and lung function of participants were measured, including Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Force

The Impact of Ambient Ozone Exposure on Respiratory Health in the U.S. Populations: A Systematic Review.

Ozone, a photochemically generated air pollutant, continues to pose a major concern for public health in the United States, with some 125 million people living in areas that exceed national ambient air quality standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. To fully understand the potential impacts of ambient ozone exposure on respiratory health, we conducted a systematic review of United States epidemiologic and experimental studies published from 1980 to 2026, encompassing both acute and chronic exposure windows. This review focused on three key domains: (1) pulmonary fun

Age-stratified signals and early onset of adverse events with pregabalin: a disproportionality analysis of the FDA adverse event reporting system.

INTRODUCTION: Pregabalin is widely used in the management of neuropathic pain and generalized anxiety disorder. However, comprehensive real-world evidence regarding its neuropsychiatric safety profile and age-specific risk variations remains insufficient. METHODS: Data were retrieved from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) from Q1 2005 to Q1 2025. Four disproportionality algorithms-reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN), and empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM)-were utilized to identify safety sign

A roadmap for modernizing vaccine safety assessment: Challenges and opportunities for new approach methodologies.

Vaccines are administered to large populations of healthy individuals, including vulnerable groups, making an exceptionally rigorous safety profile a prerequisite for their approval and use. Nonclinical vaccine safety assessment has traditionally relied on standardized animal testing methodologies, which face increasing challenges: the ethical imperative to reduce animal use, the need for faster vaccine development, and the limitations of animal models in predicting human-specific immune responses. The advent of modern vaccine platforms such as mRNA technologies and viral-vector vaccines neces
