Objective: To explore the normal range of plasma VWF levels of healthy Chinese and to analyze the influencing factors to VWF level. Methods: To detect the levels of von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF∶Ag) , von Willebrand factor ristocetin cofactor activity (VWF∶Rco) , von Willebrand factor collagen binding activity (VWF∶CB) , and the factor Ⅷ coagulation activity (FⅧ∶C) by using fully automatic and standardized testing instruments and matching reagent in 70 healthy Chinese. The effects of age, ABO blood type, gender and region were also analyzed. Meanwhile, 8 standard plasma samples (2 normal

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic transfusion reactions (HTRs) can occur with transfusion of platelets (PLTs) containing ABO-incompatible plasma. Reported cases have involved group O donors. Two cases of PLT-mediated HTRs associated with the same group A plateletpheresis component, collected from a donor taking high doses of probiotics are reported.
CASE REPORT: Case 1 was a 40-year-old 69-kg group B stem cell transplant patient who received one-half of a group A plateletpheresis component. Severe back pain occurred 10 minutes into the transfusion, accompanied by anemia and hyperbilirubinemia. Case 2 was

Previous studies of association of ABO blood groups with gonorrhea have shown contradictory results. Despite the interdependencies of ABO, Lewis, and secretor systems, none of the previous studies examined the combined effect of these systems on their proposed association with gonorrhea. This study attempted to redress that and used genotyping in addition to RBC phenotyping to determine correct tissue phenotypes. Samples from 131 gonorrhea-positive individuals and from 175 gonorrhea-negative individuals were typed for ABO and Lewis using routine antisera. Secretor and Lewis genotyping was perf

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation is an established complication of acute hemolytic transfusion reactions, particularly those involving the ABO red cell (RBC) antigen system. In addition, peripheral blood white cells, particularly monocytes, have demonstrated expression of procoagulant activity (PCA) in response to inflammatory stimuli. To better define the activation of coagulation in immune hemolysis, in vitro experiments were conducted to investigate the expression of PCA by peripheral blood white cells in ABO RBC incompatibility.

Recently we experienced one incident that the patient with A blood type reacted as AB type on macroscopic observation when the blood type was tested immediately after the infusion with Dextran70 in saline. The patient was confirmed as having the A type by reexamination later. Subsequently 90 cases were subjected to blood typing following infusion with one of the seven plasma substitutes such as dextran, MF-gelatin and HE-starch. One patient demonstrated an abnormal reaction. She had marked acceleration of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (E.S.R.) and positive serological reactions for syphilis b

Aside from causing hemolytic reactions the ABO blood group system does not have an impact on outcome after allogeneic bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (SCT). However, only a few studies have addressed the effect of ABO incompatibility on the incidence of GVHD, time to engraftment, relapse and survival. Therefore, we performed a retrospective two-center analysis of 562 consecutive patients receiving allogeneic SCT, including 361 ABO-identical, 98 minor, 86 major and 17 bidirectional ABO-incompatible SCT. In multivariate analysis adjusted for potential confounders surviv

BACKGROUND: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is a graft-versus-host immune complication after solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, typically arising from minor ABO or Rh incompatibility. It is caused by the transfer of viable donor B lymphocytes that produce alloantibodies against recipient red blood cell (RBC) antigens. The syndrome presents as delayed, immune-mediated hemolysis and can be clinically significant.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 51-year-old woman (blood group B/Rh-positive) who underwent liver transplantation from a blood group O/Rh-positive donor. On pos

INTRODUCTION: ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) is now increasingly performed in adults and children to expand the living-donor pool and address organ shortages.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 6-month-old girl with end-stage renal disease due to congenital renal anomalies who underwent living-donor ABOi kidney transplantation from her grandmother. Pretransplant antibody titers were low, and the procedure was carried out without any preconditioning treatment. Postoperative management included immunosuppression and supportive therapies, with gradual recovery of graft

BACKGROUND: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is an alloimmune complication of ABO-mismatched solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation characterized by the production of antibodies by donor-derived B lymphocytes against the recipient's red blood cell antigens. Its incidence, risk factors, and management remain poorly defined because many cases are subclinical, and most reports are case based. This study aimed to summarize the available literature on PLS, focusing on its incidence, immunohematologic mechanisms, clinical features, and management.
METHODS: We systematically searc

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) expands donor availability, but postoperative anti-ABO antibody rebound can lead to rare complications such as thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), often resulting in graft loss.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old underwent ABOi-KT (A → B) after standard desensitization. Despite achieving pre-transplant anti-A IgG and IgM titers of 1:1, a marked postoperative rebound occurred, with both titers rising to 1:1024 by postoperative day 6, accompanied by TMA and acute rejection manifesting as elevated serum creatinine (sCre) (maximum 8.63 mg/

The H antigen (O blood group), the precursor to A and B blood groups, is expressed on human erythrocytes and other cells (e.g., endothelial cells). Remarkably, the specific expression of the H antigens is uncertain due to the lack of specific reagents for its detection. Here, we describe two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), Tn4-31L and OmcFL3-02, generated by immunizing sea lampreys with human cells. Both mAbs are highly specific in comparison with the lectin Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I (UEA-I). We identified expression of H antigens in mammalian glycoproteins, human cells, and normal and maligna

BACKGROUND: Serological ABO typing in transfusion medicine and organ transplantation, can face limitations in cases involving large volume transfusions, transplants, weak subgroups, or hematological malignancies. ABO genotyping can help resolve ABO type, and there is a need for a fast, reliable, and cost-effective testing approach.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigate a commercially available medium-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) ABO genotyping assay and evaluated routine samples from a tertiary academic transplant laboratory, samples previously ABO genotyped in

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate whether a 2-week period of daily isoagglutinin titer testing after ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) is sufficient to ensure successful engraftment and to advocate for an extension of the monitoring duration in specific situations.
METHODS: We reviewed patients from January 2022 to December 2023 at Asan Medical Center who underwent therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) due to elevated ABO antibody titers and suspected acute antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) after ABOi-KT. Data collected included pre- and posttransplantation laboratory resul
