Somatization in the community.

We examined the prevalence of somatization disorder symptoms elicited with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule in 3132 community respondents interviewed in Los Angeles by the Epidemiologic Catchment Area program. The variables age, gender, ethnic background, and the presence of a psychiatric diagnosis significantly influenced the number of somatization symptoms reported. An introductory review on conceptual and nosological aspects of somatization phenomena led to the formulation of a less-restrictive operational definition of the somatizer. We found that 4.4% of the respondents met criteria for

Place of dairy products in the Chinese-American family food system.

Chinese Americans have a high risk of osteoporosis and their calcium intake is substantially below the daily recommendation. However, little has been done to reduce the risk of this hard-to-reach population. This theory-based qualitative study explored how first-generation Chinese American couples with children view dairy products, how they use them in their family food system, and how these uses influence their dietary behavior or intake. Twenty couples, recruited from weekend Chinese schools at three locations in Pennsylvania, were interviewed. Taste, texture, and use of additives and growth

Time trends in eating disturbances in young Greek migrants.

OBJECTIVE: The study intends to measure time trends in eating disorder psychopathology in Greek adolescents in Veria (Greece) and migrant Greek adolescents in Munich (Germany). For this purpose, large samples of students were assessed at both locations in the 1980s and about two decades later. The present-day prevalence of eating disorders in the Greek population was established. METHOD: Greek adolescents were assess
