Association between Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emission and Psychoacoustic measures.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of frequency-shifting techniques recently used in hearing aids for speech discrimination scores and hearing thresholds. METHODS: Thirty individuals (16 men and 14 women) with sensorineural hearing loss who used normal fitting monaural hearing aids and frequency-shifting feature for at least 2 months and whose 4000-8000 Hz hearing threshold was over 70 dB participated. The average age was 69.73 ± 10 (range: 65-80 years). We detected the types and degree of each participant's hearing loss. Measurements with and without hearing aids were made in a free field. F

Susceptibility to Residual Inhibition Is Associated With Hearing Loss and Tinnitus Chronicity.

Residual inhibition, that is, the temporary suppression of tinnitus loudness after acoustic stimulation, is a frequently observed phenomenon that may have prognostic value for clinical applications. However, it is unclear in which subjects residual inhibition is more likely and how stable the effect of inhibition is over multiple repetitions. The primary aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of hearing loss and tinnitus chronicity on residual inhibition susceptibility. The secondary aim was to investigate the short-term repeatability of residual inhibition. Residual inhibition was assess…

Animal Models of Tinnitus Treatment: Cochlear and Brain Stimulation.

Neuromodulation, via stimulation of a variety of peripheral and central structures, is used to suppress tinnitus. However, investigative limitations in humans due to ethical reasons have made it difficult to decipher the mechanisms underlying treatment-induced tinnitus relief, so a number of animal models have arisen to address these unknowns. This chapter reviews animal models of cochlear and brain stimulation and assesses their modulatory effects on behavioral evidence of tinnitus and its related neural correlates. When a structure is stimulated, localized modulation, often presenting as dow

Hearing more to hear less: a scoping review of hearing aids for tinnitus relief.

OBJECTIVE: As tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, hearing aids have been proposed for tinnitus relief in literature for more than 70 years. There is a need for recent literature to be reviewed and guide decision making in tinnitus management. This scoping review aims to provide an update of the available evidence on hearing aids for tinnitus, focussing on the effect of sound amplification or combination devices (i.e. amplification and sound generation within one device). DESIGN: Research studies were included if they investigated hearing aids or combination devices for tinnitus an

Combined Amplification and Sound Therapy for Individuals With Tinnitus and Coexisting Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneity of tinnitus perception and its impact necessitates a tailor-made management approach in everyone. The current study examined the effects of residual inhibition in combined amplification and sound therapy in individuals with tinnitus and coexisting hearing loss. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with tinnitus and coexisting hearing loss between 2016 and 2019. A total of 72 patients provided with combined amplification and sound therapy were divided into 3 groups based on residual inhibition: (i) complete residual inhibition, (ii) partial

Psychophysiological responses to potentially annoying heating, ventilation, and air conditioning noise during mentally demanding work.

Exposure to noise-or unwanted sound-is considered a major public health issue in the United States and internationally. Previous work has shown that even acute noise exposure can influence physiological response in humans and that individuals differ markedly in their susceptibility to noise. Recent research also suggests that specific acoustic properties of noise may have distinct effects on human physiological response. Much of the existing research on physiological response to noise consists of laboratory studies using very simple acoustic stimuli-like white noise or tone bursts-or field stu

Neural entrainment to speech and nonspeech in dyslexia: Conceptual replication and extension of previous investigations.

Whether phonological deficits in developmental dyslexia are associated with impaired neural sampling of auditory information is still under debate. Previous findings suggested that dyslexic participants showed atypical neural entrainment to slow and/or fast temporal modulations in speech, which might affect prosodic/syllabic and phonemic processing respectively. However, the large methodological variations across these studies do not allow us to draw clear conclusions on the nature of the entrainment deficit in dyslexia. Using magnetoencephalography, we measured neural entrainment to nonspeech

The role of third windows on human sound transmission of forward and reverse stimulations: A lumped-parameter approach.

The vestibular and cochlear aqueducts serve as additional sound transmission paths and produce different degrees of volume velocity shunt flow in cochlear sound transmission. To investigate its effect on forward and reverse stimulations, a lumped-parameter model of the human ear, which incorporates the third windows, was developed. The model combines a transmission-line ear-canal model, a middle-ear model, and an inner-ear model, which were developed previously by different investigators. The model is verified by comparison with experiments. The intracochlear differential-pressure transfer fun

The internal time keeper: Causal evidence for the role of the cerebellum in anticipating regular acoustic events.

Most acoustic events in our environment do not appear randomly but are rather predictable due to the temporal regularity in that they occur. Besides sensory-related cortical areas, the cerebellum has been suggested as a key structure in temporal processing and in the anticipation of future events. Hence, patients with cerebellum lesions show impaired precision in temporal processing as reflected in the reduced ability to exploit temporal regularity. Using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), we here aimed to draw further causal conclusions on the human cerebellum as functionally rel

Long-term effects of auditory training in severely or profoundly deaf children.

Despite new technological advances in the rehabilitation of audition in profoundly deaf children, auditory training remains a fundamental part of their education. Consequently, it is necessary to learn what kind of stimuli, what kind of auditory tasks, and what kind of learning procedures generate faster and more long-lasting benefits. The present study evaluates a training program that includes numerous nonlinguistic stimuli that tap into several means of cognitive processing. The program is based on an implicit learning procedure and was tested with six severely or profoundly deaf children.

Acoustic preference functions and song variability in the Hawaiian cricket Laupala cerasina.

Female preference functions for different sexual traits can differ significantly, from 'unimodal' to 'open ended'. Through the study of acoustic communication in anurans, several studies have reported an association between static (stereotyped) traits versus dynamic (variable) traits and preference function shape (unimodal versus open ended, respectively). Observing a similar pattern in a phylogenetically independent group would suggest that deterministic forces have caused a relationship between signal variability and preference function shape in acoustic signalling systems. We examined this

The effects of body size on functional properties of middle ear systems of anuran amphibians.

Both tympanic and nontympanic pathways of sound reception are utilized by anuran amphibians. The relationship between body size and the acoustic responsiveness of various body surfaces that may serve as pathways for sound reception in anurans was analyzed. The motion of the different surfaces (tympanum, lateral body wall, lateral head surface, and dorsal shoulder surface) produced by sound was measured with a laser vibrometer in anuran species. The frequency response and amplitude levels of motion of these body surfaces clearly were linked with size. In all animals, nontympanic surfaces were m

Azimuthal sensitivity of neurons in primary auditory cortex of cats. II. Organization along frequency-band strips.

1. The organization of azimuthal sensitivity of units across the dorsoventral extent of primary auditory cortex (AI) was studied in electrode penetrations made along frequency-band strips of AI. Azimuthal sensitivity for each unit was represented by a mean azimuth function (MF) calculated from all azimuth functions obtained to characteristic frequency (CF) stimuli at intensities 20 dB or more greater than threshold. MFs were classified as contrafield, ipsi-field, central-field, omnidirectional, or multipeaked, according to the criteria established in the companion paper (Rajan et al. 1990). 2.

Experimental investigation on lateral inhibition by means of stapedius reflex threshold.

In 15 normal-hearing persons a number of stapedius reflex responses 10 dB above individual reflex threshold has been measured and recorded. In an experimental condition the same stimulus tone has been used and the responses recorded. During the experiment two tones have been continuously presented - one of lower and one of higher frequency with amplitudes lying 10-15 dB underneath the tone evoking the stimulus. In an experimental condition an attenuation of the reflex response resulted. The normal reflex decay, first of all in higher frequencies has been controlled during experiment. The resul

A programmable and self-adaptive ultrasonic wireless implant for personalized chronic pain management.

Chronic pain management typically involves opioids, which are associated with severe side effects such as addiction. Implantable percutaneous electrical stimulators are a promising alternative approach to pain management. However, they are expensive, can cause damage during surgery and often rely on a battery power supply that must be periodically replaced. Here we report an integrated flexible ultrasound-induced wireless implantable stimulator combined with a pain detection and management system for personalized chronic pain management. Power is supplied to the stimulator by a wearable ultras

An algorithm underlying directional hearing in fish.

Humans and other land vertebrates localize sound by comparing the signals in each ear. Even though these differences are virtually absent underwater, fish are still able to sense the direction of sound. In 1975, Arie Schuijf proposed that this ability could arise from a comparison of the particle motion phase and the pressure phase of sound, a prediction that was recently confirmed experimentally for near-field sounds. However, in natural environments, sounds arrive from variable distances, altering the motion-pressure-phase relationship. Thus, directional hearing and distance hearing are pote

Research progress of the inferior colliculus: from Neuron, neural circuit to auditory disease.

The auditory midbrain, also known as the inferior colliculus (IC), serves as a crucial hub in the auditory pathway. Comprising diverse cell types, the IC plays a pivotal role in various auditory functions, including sound localization, auditory plasticity, sound detection, and sound-induced behaviors. Notably, the IC is implicated in several auditory central disorders, such as tinnitus, age-related hearing loss, autism and Fragile X syndrome. Accurate classification of IC neurons is vital for comprehending both normal and dysfunctional aspects of IC function. Various parameters, including dend
