Catecholaminergic Adaptation to Extreme Military Stress: Norepinephrine and Dopamine Responses During and After SERE Training.

Catecholamines are fundamental mediators of the stress response, regulating arousal, vigilance, and adaptive behavior. However, their dynamics under extreme real-life conditions remain insufficiently explored. Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training provides a unique model for examining neuroendocrine mechanisms of adaptation during both the acute phase and the recovery period following intense psychological and physical stress. Serum norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) were measured in 47 special forces soldiers during peak stress in SERE and one month later, compared with

RpoS sigma factor mediates adaptation and virulence in Vibrio mimicus.

The alternative sigma factor RpoS functions as a regulator of stress and virulence response in numerous bacterial species. Vibrio mimicus is a critical opportunistic pathogen causing huge losses to aquaculture. However, the exact role of RpoS in V. mimicus remains unclear. In this study, rpoS deletion mutant of V. mimicus was constructed through allelic exchange and the phenotypic and transcriptional changes were investigated to determine the function of RpoS. The abilities of growth, motility, biofilm production, hemolytic activity and pathogenicity were significantly impaired in ΔrpoS strain

Protective role of anthocyanins in plants under low nitrogen stress.

Nitrogen (N) is a major nutrient of plants but often a limiting factor for plant growth and crop yield. To adapt to N deficiency, plants have evolved adaptive responses including accumulation of anthocyanins. However, it is still unclear whether the accumulated anthocyanins are part of the components of plant tolerance under low N stress. Here, we demonstrate that low N-induced anthocyanins contribute substantially to the low N tolerance of Arabidopsis thaliana. pap1-1, a mutant defective in MYB75 (PAP1), a MYB-type transcription factor that positively regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis in Ara

At the extreme end of the psychoneuroimmunological spectrum: delirium as a maladaptive sickness behaviour response.

Delirium is a common and severe neuropsychiatric syndrome characterised by acute deterioration and fluctuations in mental status. It is precipitated mainly by acute illness, trauma, surgery, or drugs. Delirium affects around one in eight hospital inpatients and is associated with multiple adverse consequences, including new institutionalisation, worsening of existing dementia, and death. Patients with delirium show attentional and other cognitive deficits, altered alertness (mostly reduced, but some patients develop agitation and hyperactivity), altered sleep-wake cycle and psychoses. The path

Physiological responses to starvation in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla): effects on haematological, biochemical, non-specific immune parameters and skin structures.

The physiological effects of short-term starvation on some haematological, biochemical and non-specific immune response parameters together with the histological structure of the skin, were investigated in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. Blood haemoglobin and haematocrit, serum glucose and cortisol, hemolysins, haemagglutinins, and lysozyme in the plasma, kidney and epidermal extract, were measured in fish after 31, 42 and 58 days of starvation, and compared to those of fed fish. Starvation did not affect haemoglobin and haematocrit values, while an increase in glucose and cortisol levels

Metabolic learning in the intestine: adaptation to nutrition and luminal factors.

There is increasing evidence that the magnitude and potential of intestinal nutrient absorption (sugars, fatty acids, cholesterol and triglycerides) and intestinal defense function are regulated by metabolic learning phenomena, and are influenced by dietary energy content and exercise. Metabolic overload syndromes, mainly obesity, and chronic malabsorption disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease have been defined as extreme phenotypes. Metabolic learning processes depend on developmental and transcriptional control systems of intestinal epithelial cell differentiation.

Antioxidants, oxidative damage and oxygen deprivation stress: a review.

Oxidative stress is induced by a wide range of environmental factors including UV stress, pathogen invasion (hypersensitive reaction), herbicide action and oxygen shortage. Oxygen deprivation stress in plant cells is distinguished by three physiologically different states: transient hypoxia, anoxia and reoxygenation. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is characteristic for hypoxia and especially for reoxygenation. Of the ROS, hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and superoxide (O(2)(.-)) are both produced in a number of cellular reactions, including the iron-catalysed Fenton reaction, and by

Compensation of total loss of vestibulo-ocular reflex by enhanced optokinetic response.

The gain in the optokinetic nystagmus reflex (OKR) of 27 labyrinthine-defective patients was compared with that of 27 subjects without any otoneurological abnormality, who were matched by age and sex. The patients without labyrinth function exhibited significantly higher OKR gains than the control subjects, especially so at higher age. The observed enhancement of OKR gain in the absence of vestibular function is ascribed to the effect of optokinetic training brought about by enhanced slippage of retinal images due to lack of an efficient vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Putatively Adaptive and Genome-Wide Genetic Variation Often Rank Populations as Similarly Distinctive.

Identifying which populations within species to prioritize to maintain genetic diversity is challenging. Due to its direct connection to current patterns of adaptation and presumed connection to adaptive capacity, some researchers advocate prioritizing adaptive variation. Other researchers advocate prioritizing populations using genome-wide variation, citing the many limitations in identifying adaptive genetic variation, an unknown future, and verbal theory that suggests patterns of easy-to-gather genome-wide genetic variation and adaptive genetic variation may often be congruent. However, evi

The effects of childhood maltreatment on brain structure, function and connectivity.

Maltreatment-related childhood adversity is the leading preventable risk factor for mental illness and substance abuse. Although the association between maltreatment and psychopathology is compelling, there is a pressing need to understand how maltreatment increases the risk of psychiatric disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that maltreatment alters trajectories of brain development to affect sensory systems, network architecture and circuits involved in threat detection, emotional regulation and reward anticipation. This Review explores whether these alterations reflect toxic effects of ear

Response properties of MST parafoveal neurons during smooth pursuit adaptation.

Visual motion neurons in the posterior parietal cortex play a critical role in the guidance of smooth pursuit eye movements. Initial pursuit (open-loop period) is driven, in part, by visual motion signals from cortical areas, such as the medial superior temporal area (MST). The purpose of this study was to determine whether adaptation of initial pursuit gain arises because of altered visual sensitivity of neurons at the cortical level. It is well known that the visual motion response in MST is suppressed after exposure to a large-field visual motion stimulus, showing visual motion adaptation.

Physiology of Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring.

Fetal heart tracings (FHTs) are useful as a window into the oxygenation status of the fetal brain. Patterns in the FHT reflect the oxygen status of the fetal brain. Fetal adaptive response to progressive hypoxemia and acidosis are detectable and produce recognizable patterns in the fetal heart rate. The basic physiology and adaptive responses that regulate the fetal heart rate and physiological fetal adaptations to stress as reflected in the FHTs are described. Mechanisms of oxygen delivery to the fetus including ways in which those mechanisms can be disrupted are reviewed.

[Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and candidate gene expression analysis of submergence tolerance of rice at plumule and seedling stages].

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a major staple crop worldwide, and its germination (plumule) and seedling stages are susceptible to submergence stress, which leads to impaired germination and yield reduction. Identifying submergence tolerance genes is one of the most effective strategies to address this problem. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with submergence tolerance at the plumule and seedling stages in rice, we used an indica rice cultivar 'HZ', a japonica cultivar 'Nekken2', and 120 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross between them in this study. Traits

Exercise, mitochondrial stress, and trained immunity: metabolic adaptation of innate immunity.

Traditionally recognized as "cellular powerhouses", mitochondria have gained relevance as pivotal nodes in the integration of metabolism, stress signaling, and innate immunity. In this context, the present work seeks to answer the following question: Does the continuous, exercise-induced mitochondrial stress contribute towards training of innate immune cells by promoting the generation of DAMPs such as mtDNA and succinate? Exercise can be considered as a form of controllable mitochondrial stressor. Mechanistically, the temporary release of mtDAMPs through exercise results in activation of patt

Harnessing genomics and transcriptomics to explore the genetic and molecular basis of abiotic stress tolerance in minor millets - a comprehensive review.

Minor millets represent a promising avenue for addressing food security challenges through their unique C4 photosynthetic pathway and inherent resilience to harsh environmental conditions. These crops exhibit exceptional adaptation to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and nutrient-poor soils, while simultaneously offering substantial nutritional benefits, including high levels of iron, zinc, dietary fiber, and bioactive compounds. Recent advancements in high-throughput sequencing have revolutionized our understanding of stress tolerance mechanisms in these underutilized crops. This r

Orthology-based comparative transcriptomic analysis reveals conserved osmoadaptive responses in Bacillus velezensis and Bacillus paralicheniformis.

Salinity imposes severe osmotic and ionic challenges that require coordinated adaptive responses in microorganisms. Although numerous studies have characterized salt-stress responses in individual Bacillus species, the extent to which these responses are conserved across phylogenetically distinct taxa remains poorly understood. Here, we performed an orthology-based comparative transcriptomic analysis of Bacillus velezensis and Bacillus paralicheniformis using publicly available RNA-seq datasets comparing low- and high-salinity conditions within each species. Publicly available RNA-seq datasets

Nitric oxide functional relationships with nitrogen-containing stress metabolites: Role in plant adaptation to adverse abiotic factors.

Polyamines, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), proline, and glycine betaine (GB) are important plant stress metabolites that are interconnected in common metabolic cycles. These compounds have a multifunctional protective effect on plant cells under stress conditions, acting as osmoregulators, antioxidants, chaperones, and intracellular pH stabilizers, among other roles. The key role of these compounds, however, lies in their involvement in the signaling network of plant cells. Stress metabolites, in particular, engage in a complex functional interaction with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric
