Recent Advances in Chemical Composition and Transdermal Delivery Systems for Topical Bio-actives in Skin Cancer.

Skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, is conventionally treated by surgery, phototherapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. For decades, surgical removal of malignant cancers has favored patients' therapeutic options. However, multiple aspects, such as the patient's comorbidities, the anatomical location of the lesion, and possible resistance to recurrent excisions, can influence the decision to conduct surgery. Therefore, topical and transdermal therapy may be a more appropriate option, allowing for higher therapeutic levels at the site of action a

An update on microneedle-based systems for diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the most serious chronic diseases today. Patients with diabetes need frequent insulin injections or blood sampling to monitor blood glucose levels. The microneedles are a painless transdermal drug delivery system, which has great advantages in achieving self-management. There have been a lot of researches on microneedles used in diabetes treatment. Microneedle-based treatment of diabetes has also changed from a simple and reliable system to a complex and efficient system. This review introduces microfluidic, glucose response, and other contents based on microneedles, and som

Pain management with transdermal drug administration: A review.

Pain management is an urgent issue to solve with complex mechanisms. Localized acute pain requires rapid and accurate delivery of drugs with less distribution in the blood circulation while chronic pain requires controlled release of drugs with long drug retention time. The transdermal route, a promising way with high patient compliance was known for painless delivery, long drug retention time, stable blood concentration, easily controlled dosage and release rate as well as the fewer side effects. This review presents transdermal route for pain management according to the different sites of ac

Transdermal drug delivery systems for the effective management of type 2 diabetes mellitus: A review.

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by either insufficient insulin production or the inability to take it up for the glycemic regulation in the human body. According to WHO reports, T2DM will be the seventh-largest syndrome resulting in mortality by 2030. To tackle this chronic metabolic disorder, the person with diabetes population depends on subcutaneous administration (Sub-Q) of insulin and certain oral hypoglycemic drugs. However, these current invasive practices suffered from painful injections, needle phobia, multiple doses, risk of infection and poor-patient compliance. Hen

Comprehensive characterization of the structure and properties of human stratum corneum relating to barrier function and skin hydration: modulation by a moisturizer formulation.

The stratum corneum (SC) is key in the maintenance of the biomechanical barrier and hydration of skin. Our previous investigations showed beneficial effects of a combination of emollients on water capture and retention and protein and lipid organization, all of which are linked to dryness and dry skin damage. Here, we show how a formulation containing an emollient combination ("Trio") and its basal formulation (placebo) impacted the descriptors of SC hydration in SC layers. Only the Trio formulation-not its placebo formulation-modified SC biomechanical drying stress behaviour and imparted a hi

Comparison of physical enhancement technologies in the skin permeation of methyl amino levulinic acid (mALA).

Physical drug delivery enhancement in skin has been shown to enhance cosmeceutical actives efficacy. Among the physical drug delivery enhancement technologies, microneedle is the most commercially successful technology. However, there are pros and cons like other physical enhancement technologies including variabilities in penetration depth and lack of efficacy. In this study, three physical topical dug delivery enhancements, elongated microparticles, microneedles and dermaroller, were applied to ex vivo pig skin and compared. The model topical drug that was used is 5-Aminolevulinic acid, the

Fentanyl use disorder characterized by unprescribed use of transdermal patches: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid with analgesic potency 75-100 times higher than that of morphine, and its analgesic effect is used for pain treatment, mostly in cancer patients. Using fentanyl patches may reduce misuse potential due to the transdermal route of administration, long-acting action, sustained release delivery property, and maintenance of steady-state serum concentration of the drug. Although there have been reports of transdermal fentanyl patches (TFPs) misuse via transmucosal, trans-nasal, intravenous, and oral routes of administration, fentanyl use disorder via the tr
