A latex coagglutination assay was developed to identify rough (R) isolates of Brucella. The preparation of stable formolized sheep cells coated with thyroglobulin and their use for the detection of auto-antibodies in human thyroiditis is described. This provides an easy laboratory test which gives results closely comparable with those using fresh tanned cells. The agglutination titres do not closely parallel the antibody content of the serum but a good correlation may be obtained by inhibiting agglutination with thyroglobulin. The diagnostic usefulness of the test in treating disorders of the thyroid is discussed and related to the results of tests for the other two immune system

Cooked rice contaminated with staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) was mixed with 'natto', a Bacillus natto fermented soybean food, and the mixture was incubated at 37 degrees C for 1 h. Plesiomonas shigelloides was isolated as the sole pathogen from gallbladder bile and wall in a 58-year-old woman with acute cholecystitis. The patient developed an unusual postoperative complication characterized by culture-negative discharge from the wound in combination with extensive abdominal cellulitis and afebrility. Agglutinating antibodies to P. shigelloides were demonstrated in the serum of the patient by the microscopic Widal agglutination test.

The history of a man suffering from chronic cryptococcal meningitis is presented. A series of cerebrospinal fluid and serum specimens from this patient were investigated retrospectively by latex agglutination for the presence of cryptococcal antigens. The results were related to other laboratory findings, and to the patient's clinical progress. The cryptococcal latex agglutination test was shown to be potentially useful in the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of such patients.

This study describes diagnostic testing for leptospirosis at our institution in Scotland over a 10-year period. Four immunological reactions of the liver echinococcosis are examined - Complement fixation test (CF), Latex agglutination test (LA), Bentonite agglutination test (BA) and Indirect haemagglutination test (IHA). The diagnostic "potentialities" of every sample are specified separately. IHA has given the best results, followed by LA. BA and CF in last place. Serum agglutination test plus exposure history were used to diagnose most cases of human brucellosis in 2 China provinces. After appropriate treatment, 13.3% of acute brucellosis cases progressed to chronic disease; arthritis was an early predictor.
