A challenging diagnosis: The overlap of hepatorenal polycystic disease and amebiasis.

A 71-year-old retired man returning from Senegal was found to have multiple hepatorenal cysts associated with a colonic mass on CT. Initially misdiagnosed, stool and abscess puncture analyses revealed intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. On the other hand, genetic testing suggested hepatorenal polycystic disease, demonstrating the coexistence of these two pathologies.

Colonic perforation due to amebiasis, a rare and lethal complication.

Amebiasis is still a major healthcare concern, especially in developing countries like Ecuador. The lack of sanitary control and hygiene measures make parasites infections still a burden for patients and physicians. Despite infections due to this parasites are usually mild, severe infections and fatal outcomes although rare still occur. Bowel perforation is a rare complication of amebiasis, and unfortunately, it continues to be almost fatal. We present a case of an Ecuadorian patient who presented to the emergency room with an acute abdomen, despite adequate surgery and critical care, the pati…

Immune Response of Amebiasis and Immune Evasion by Entamoeba histolytica.

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite and the causative agent of amebiasis. It is estimated approximately 1% of humans are infected with E. histolytica, resulting in an estimate of 100,000 deaths annually. Clinical manifestations of amebic infection range widely from asymptomatic to severe symptoms, including dysentery and extra-intestinal abscesses. Like other infectious diseases, it is assumed that only ~20% of infected individuals develop symptoms, and genetic factors of both the parasite and humans as well as the environmental factors, e.g., microbiota, determine outcome of infecti…

Towards the establishment of a porcine model to study human amebiasis.

BACKGROUND: Entamoeba histolytica is an important parasite of the human intestine. Its life cycle is monoxenous with two stages: (i) the tro … lytica has been obtained from trophozoite adapted to axenic culture. The reproduction of intestinal amebiasis in an animal model is difficult while for liver amebiasis there are well-described rodent models. During this study, we worked on the assessment of pigs as a new potential model to study amebiasis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We first co-cultur …

Experimental amebiasis: a selected review of some in vivo models.

The use of in vivo animal models in amebiasis has contributed significantly to the knowledge of this common human parasitic disease. Although there is no animal model that mimics the whole cycle of the human disease, the use of different susceptible and resistant laboratory animals and the availability for many years of techniques for the axenic culture of trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica have allowed a better understanding of the parasite and the host-parasite relationship. The recent introduction of frontier methodologies in biology has increased our comprehension of this parasite. New …

Amebiasis in schistosomiasis endemic and non-endemic areas in Egypt.

Stool and blood specimens were collected from each of 404 and 576 individuals at Sindbis village (Qualiubia Governorate) in the Nile Delta where schistosomiasis is endemic and El-Rashda village (New Valley Governorate) in the Western Desert of Egypt where there is no schistosomiasis; respectively. Based on the microscopical examination of stool specimens, the prevalence of infection with Entamoeba (E. histolytica and/or E. dispar which are morphologically indistinguishable) was higher at Sindbis than at El Rashda village (29.3% and 20%, respectively). At Sindbis, the prevalence of Entamoeba (b

Role of mucosal secretory immunity in the development of an amebiasis vaccine.

Invasive colonic infection by the enteric protozoan Entamoeba histolytica elicits a mucosal anti-amebic IgA antibody response. The E. histolytica galactose-inhibitable adherence protein (GIAP) mediates parasite binding to colonic mucins and epithelial cells. Anti-GIAP secretory IgA antibodies are found during invasive amebiasis and can be elicited by immunization of rats with the native protein. Entamoeba histolytica contains potent IgA degradative activities due to its cysteine-specific proteases. Research is needed to further understand the role of secretory antibodies in natural or vaccine-…
