Amnesia during cold water immersion: a case report.

This report describes a case of amnesia during a cold-water experiment. The volunteer was exposed three times in 1 day (120 min duration each time) to 20 degrees C water. During the third immersion, from min 95 to min 115, the subject experienced transient global amnesia for 20 min. The rectal temperature during this time was 35.6 degrees C. This single case demonstrates that memory loss in a young individual apparently can occur after cold-water exposure and at core temperatures above 35 degrees C.

[An older patient with depression, anxiety and acute amnesia].

We saw a 73-year-old woman, diagnosed with a recurrent depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Escitalopram had been started by her general practitioner more than seven weeks ago. It was not effective, and was therefore tapered with the aim of starting a different antidepressant. During tapering acute memory problems occurred, presumed to be atypical transient global amnesia. Here we highlight the psychiatric, pharmacological and neurological considerations and differential diagnosis of acute memory disorders.

Reversible hippocampal lesions detected on magnetic resonance imaging in two cases of transient selective amnesia for simple machine operation.

We report two extremely rare cases involving the development of transient selective retrograde amnesia for simple machine operation lasting for several hours. A 61-year-old male taxi driver suddenly became unable to operate a taximeter, and a 66-year-old female janitor suddenly became unable to use a fax machine. They could precisely recount their episodes to others both during and after the attacks, and their memories during their attacks corresponded to the memory of the witness and the medical records of the doctor, respectively. Therefore, it appears that these individuals remained alert a

Transient neurologic syndromes: A diagnostic approach.

Clinicians are often confronted with patients who have transient neurologic symptoms lasting seconds to hours. In many of these patients, their symptoms have gone away or returned to baseline by the time of evaluation, making the diagnosis even more challenging. Elements such as correlation of symptoms with vascular territory, prodromes, triggers, motor symptoms, confusion, and sleep behavior can guide the diagnostic workup.

[Transient amnesia in the elderly].

The two main aetiologies of transient amnesia in the elderly are idiopathic transient global amnesia (TGA) and iatrogenic or toxic amnesia. Vascular and epileptic amnesia are less common. According to the literature, transient psychogenic amnesia, which is a frequent cause of amnesia at age 30 to 50, is very rare in the elderly. TGA is the prototypical picture of transient amnesia. It occurs more often after age 50, with no identified cause, even if some authors accept emotional stress or minor head trauma as occasional precipitants. The mechanism of TGA remains a matter of discussion. It may

[A 9-year-old boy with sudden memory loss].

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia is a recognised phenomenon in adults. However in children it is rarely described. It is characterised by a sudden loss of memory in an otherwise healthy patient. What is striking is that other cognitive functions and neurological examination are normal. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old boy presented at the paediatric ward with acute onset retrograde and anterograde amnesia. He had no history of headache or other (neurological) symptoms. There were no known emotional or physical stressors. A general physical and neurological examination showed no abnormalitie

Amnesia, memory disturbances and epilepsy.

The epileptic syndromes, notably the temporal lobe epilepsy, frequently include memory disturbances. These memory disturbances may occur during seizures, i.e. ictal memory disturbances, or between seizures, i.e. interictal memory disturbances. Two atypical clinical epileptic syndromes should be pointed out in the elderly: the transient epileptic amnesia and the epileptic pseudodementia. Both represent potentially reversible memory disturbances and have a treatment based on antiepileptic drugs. Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a subtype of medial temporal lobe epilepsy with late onset. TEA

Amnesic disorders.

Memory disturbances frequently occur after brain damage, but can be associated with psychiatric illnesses as well. Amnesia--the most severe form of memory impairment--has several variants, including anterograde and retrograde amnesia, material-specific and modality-specific amnesia, and transient global amnesia. We searched databases to obtain an overview of amnesia research from the past 5 years. Research into amnesia has increased exponentially, probably because of the availability of modern brain-imaging techniques. In line with the view that memory is not a unity but is organised into seve

Amnestic state in a Holocaust survivor patient: psychogenic versus neurological basis.

Differentiation between psychogenic and organic amnesia is sometimes quite difficult. This paper focuses on the psychogenic and organic components of a complex case of amnesia rooted in remote and prolonged traumatic stress and manifested under circumstances evoking dissociated memories. The Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) of a concentration camp survivor who developed sudden amnesia during a psychiatric intake interview was clearly triggered by the pressure of repressed Holocaust memories. The importance of distinguishing between TGA and dissociative amnesia is emphasized, and the role of psyc

Transient amnesic syndromes.

Transient amnesic syndromes are striking clinical phenomena that are commonly encountered by physicians in acute medical settings. Diagnosis of such syndromes can be challenging, and their causes have been debated for over 50 years. Critical clinical distinctions, such as between transient global amnesia (TGA) and transient epileptic amnesia (TEA), as well as important clues to the underlying pathophysiology, have recently been revealed. TGA is characterized by the sudden onset of a profound anterograde and retrograde amnesia that lasts for up to 24 h, with neuroimaging after an acute TGA even

[Subtle focal diffusion abnormality in the hippocampus].

A 53-year-old female patient presented with sudden onset confusion and disorientation. Further neurological examination was unremarkable and the patient showed a complete recovery after several hours. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination performed 2 days later revealed a tiny focal lesion in the lateral hippocampus in the diffusion weighted images consistent with transient global amnesia.

[Permanent amnesia as a result of a bilateral lesion of the hippocampus: description of a clinical case].

A case of permanent global amnesia resulting from a bilateral hippocampal lesion is reported, remarkable for its typical clinical picture and prolonged period of observation with repeated neuropsychological testing. No tendency toward spontaneous recovery was noted, even though extra-mnesic cognitive functions remained undamaged. No differences were observed between this amnesic syndrome and the neuropsychological picture during an acute episode of transient global amnesia.

Transient procedural amnesia.

A man experienced temporary amnesia for tasks which he was used to performing daily as they were the core of his working activity (bread making). No overt etiology was found. We hypothesized a disorder that is similar to transient global amnesia, but selectively affects procedural memory.

[Side-effects of glucocorticosteroids in multiple sclerosis: a case report of a patient with global amnesia].

Pulse-doses of corticosteroids are actively used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis relapses. Short pulse-treatment is usually well-tolerated by patients though side-effects may be observed. We described a rare case of transient global amnesia after the pulse-treatment with corticosteroids. A complex examination excluded other causes of amnesia.

[A case of retrograde amnesia of 22 years, continued for 4 days following a general anesthesia accompanied by a permanent amnesia of these 4 days after the complete recovery from the retrograde amnesia].

A case of global amnesia which continued for 4 days following a general anesthesia and recovered without any neurological deficits was reported. The patient was a 38-year-old woman suspected of lung cancer, and scheduled for pulmonary lobectomy. She had a history of appendectomy under spinal anesthesia 22 years before. She was premedicated with diazepam (10mg), atropine (0.5mg) and pentazocine (30mg). Anesthesia was induced with thiamylal (500mg) and succinylcholine (140mg) iv and 100% oxygen. Anesthesia was maintained with enflurane and nitrous oxide with oxygen for 3 hours. After her recover

[Two cases of hippocampal infarction with persistent memory impairment in which diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was useful].

We present two patients (case 1: a 78-year-old right-handed woman, case 2: a 66-year-old right-handed woman) with suspected transient global amnesia. Both patients showed sudden onset amnesia that appeared to resolve within 24 hours, and they showed no abnormal findings on electroencephalography or single photon emission tomography. However, the results of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) on the ninth (case2) or tenth day (case1) after the onset indicated memory impairment. And diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) revealed a unilateral high-intensity area in the hippoca

Syndromes of transient amnesia: towards a classification. A study of 153 cases.

Of 153 patients presenting with acute transient amnesia, 114 fulfilled the proposed strict diagnostic criteria for transient global amnesia (TGA). The prognosis of this group was excellent with the exception of a small subgroup (7%), largely identifiable because of atypically brief or recurrent attacks, who developed epilepsy of temporal lobe type on follow up. Computerised tomography (CT) scans performed on 95 patients were normal, evidence for covert alcoholism was lacking and there was a familial incidence of approximately 2%. By contrast, the group of 39 patients who did not meet the crite

Amnesic syndrome with a unilateral thalamic lesion: a case report.

A 40-year-old man suffered an attack of transient global amnesia. The anterograde amnesia receded after 2 days, but a deficit remained in the retrieval stage of memory, which impaired the recall of names and of the information necessary to give details of particular events. Computed tomography revealed ischaemic infarction in the left anterolateral thalamus.

Transient epileptic amnesia: an emerging late-onset epileptic syndrome.

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a distinct neurologic condition occurring in late-middle/old age and presenting with amnesic attacks of epileptic nature and interictal memory disturbances. For many years this condition has been associated with the nonepileptic condition of transient global amnesia (TGA) and still today is poorly recognized by clinicians. Despite the clinical and laboratory findings that distinguish TEA from TGA, differential diagnosis may be difficult in the individual patient. Every effort must be employed for an early diagnosis, since antiepileptic treatment may readily

[Transient epileptic amnesia].

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a sub-type of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, with amnesic seizures. TEA is characterized by recurrent episodes of amnesia. Diagnostic criteria are available for TEA, and these memory disturbances should not be misdiagnosed with transient global amnesia. The neuropsychological evaluation is normal, however, autobiographical memory impairment is present in 70% of the cases and accelerated long term forgetting in 44%. When a patient complains of memory disturbances, especially autobiographical memory, TEA must be considered especially if there was an amnesic e
