Clinical features of patients with designer-drug-related disorder in Japan: a comparison with patients with methamphetamine- and hypnotic/anxiolytic-related disorders.

AIM: The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features of designer-drug-abusing patients through comparisons with methamphetamine-abusing patients and hypnotics/anxiolytics-abusing patients. METHODS: Information on 126 designer-drug-abusing patients, 138 methamphetamine-abusing patients, and 87 hypnotics/anxiolytics-abusing patients was extracted from the 2012 database of 'The Nationwide Mental Hospital Survey on Drug-related Psychiatric Disorders' and the clinical variables of designer-drug-abusing patients compared with those of the other two groups. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis

Correlates of three-year outpatient medical care use among rural stimulant users.

Outpatient medical care (OMC) settings are a care context in which effective management of unhealthy substance use can occur. However, no studies have documented rates of OMC use and characteristics of OMC use among rural substance users. This study sought to examine the rates and frequency of OMC use in a sample of rural drug users over a three-year period. We also explored characteristics of participants associated with use of OMCs over time. Data were collected from June 2005 to September 2007 from a natural history study of 710 stimulant users living in rural communities. Participants were

Beyond methamphetamine: Documenting the implementation of the Matrix model of substance use treatment for opioid users in a South African setting.

INTRODUCTION: The Matrix model of substance use treatment has been evaluated extensively in the United States as an effective treatment for methamphetamine use disorders. Since 2007, the Matrix model has been implemented in Cape Town, South Africa, where one in four treatment-seeking individuals are primarily opioid rather than stimulant users. Yet, there has been limited data on the application of the Matrix model for other types of substance use disorders in a resource-limited setting. METHODS: We compared primary opioid and primary methamphetamine users seeking treatment at the first certi

Interaction of stress and stimulants in female rats: Role of chronic stress on later reactivity to methamphetamine.

Previous research in humans and animals suggests that prior exposure to stress alters responsivity to drugs of abuse, including psychostimulants. Male rats show an augmented striatal dopamine response to methamphetamine following exposure to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). Compared to males, female rats have been shown to be highly sensitive to the effects of stimulants and stress independently, however few studies have examined the interaction between stress and stimulants in female rats. Therefore, the current study investigated whether prior exposure to chronic stress potentiated the be

No association between CART (cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript) gene and methamphetamine dependence.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) was originally discovered as a peptide that increased in the rat striatum after injection of a psychostimulant drug, such as cocaine or amphetamine, and is suggested to play potential roles in drug dependence. We tested the genetic association between the CART gene and methamphetamine (METH) dependence and/or psychosis. The subjects were 203 patients with METH dependence and 239 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the CART gene, -156A>G and IVS1 + 224G>A, were examined . There were no signi

Abnormally high concentrations of amphetamine in blood of impaired drivers.

We present a case series (N = 46) of individuals apprehended in Sweden for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). These cases were selected because the concentrations of amphetamine in blood were abnormally high (> 5.0 mg/L), the highest being 17 mg/L. In comparison, the median blood-amphetamine concentration in a population of DUID offenders (N = 6,613) was 0.70 mg/L. Among the DUID suspects with extremely high blood-amphetamine concentrations there were 38 men (83%) with mean age of 37.8 y (SD 6.8 y) and 8 women (17%) with a mean age of 34.1 y (SD 4.3 y). All had previously been regist

Neuropsychological impairment in chronic cocaine abusers.

Twenty chronic cocaine abusers were compared with age and education matched controls using standardized neuropsychological assessment procedures to determine whether the cocaine abusers were impaired. Fifty percent of the cocaine abusers in contrast to 15% of the controls scored in the impaired range on the summary index of the Neuropsychological Screening Exam. The cocaine abusers also performed more poorly on the Halstead Category Test, the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, the WAIS-R Arithmetic Test, and a test of verbal memory (forgetting). In the cocaine abuser sample, neuropsychological perf

Associations between methamphetamine use, psychiatric comorbidities and treatment outcome in two inpatient rehabilitation centers.

The use of methamphetamine is spreading globally and provokes the need for effective treatment options. Previous research showed increased psychiatric comorbidities in methamphetamine users, but its impact on treatment success is still unclear. This study investigates data from two German addiction rehabilitation centers including 108 methamphetamine using individuals. The participants were tested and interviewed at the beginning of the addiction treatment program and at the end of treatment after about six months. In total, 95% of the participants had at least another psychiatric diagnosis. A

Machine-learning identifies substance-specific behavioral markers for opiate and stimulant dependence.

BACKGROUND: Recent animal and human studies reveal distinct cognitive and neurobiological differences between opiate and stimulant addictions; however, our understanding of the common and specific effects of these two classes of drugs remains limited due to the high rates of polysubstance-dependence among drug users. METHODS: The goal of the current study was to identify multivariate substance-specific markers classifying heroin dependence (HD) and amphetamine dependence (AD), by using machine-learning approaches. Participants included 39 amphetamine mono-dependent, 44 heroin mono-dependent,

A longitudinal study of self-reported psychopathology in early ecstasy and amphetamine users.

AIMS: It still remains unclear whether psychopathological abnormalities described in human 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine users (MDMA users) and d-amphetamine users (AMPH users) existed before the beginning of regular use or if they develop with ongoing use. OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted in order to assess this relationship and to overcome previous methodological shortcomings. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study in 96 beginning MDMA and d-amphetamine users between 2006 and 2011 with a follow-up duration of 24 months. In order to explore the impact of MDMA and AMPH use on se

Recreational ecstasy use and the neurotoxic potential of MDMA: current status of the controversy and methodological issues.

The controversy over possible MDMA-induced serotonergic neurotoxicity in human recreational ecstasy users is examined critically in light of recent research findings. Although the designs of such studies have improved considerably since the 1990s, the evidence to date remains equivocal for a number of reasons, including (1) inconsistent findings on the existence and reversibility of persistent ecstasy-related serotonergic and cognitive deficits; (2) lack of clear association between changes in brain imaging measures and functional deficits attributed to MDMA-induced neurotoxicity; (3) the cont
