Learning beyond the lab: A gamified approach to anatomy education in a museum-based experience.

Anatomy education, traditionally rooted in descriptive instruction and cadaveric dissection, is undergoing a significant transformation through the integration of educational technologies and contemporary pedagogical strategies. Among these, active learning methodologies, such as gamified-based learning, have emerged as approaches designed to foster engagement, enhance interactivity, and support students' learning process. This study explores the implementation of a gamified learning activity within a Human Anatomy Museum, leveraging its rich collection of anatomical specimens to create a dyna

Corrective osteotomy for malunion of the distal radius.

Forty-five patients were reviewed on average 5.7 years after corrective osteotomy for symptomatic distal radius malunion. Restoration of anatomy and function was assessed compared with the contralateral wrist. It was found that osteotomy of the distal radius alone did not completely restore normal anatomy and relieve symptoms, and in several cases a second operation was needed. Osteoarthritic changes in the radiocarpal and radioulnar joints were common, and they correlated with restriction in range of motion, but not with pain. Range of motion and grip power were reduced compared to the unaffe

Thoracolaparoscopic Esophagectomy for Severe Post-Corrosive Esophageal Stricture in a Young Adult: Implications for Minimally Invasive Surgical Practice.

BACKGROUND Post-corrosive esophageal stricture (PCES) is a severe condition resulting from caustic ingestion that often leads to progressive dysphagia and requires surgical intervention after endoscopic treatment failure. Although minimally invasive esophagectomy is widely used in oncologic practice, its role in PCES remains limited due to the technical challenges posed by dense fibrosis and distorted anatomy. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 21-year-old man with severe PCES after accidental ingestion of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄). The patient developed progressive dysphagia despite re

Ticagrelor Versus Prasugrel in Diabetes and Multivessel Coronary Disease: Insights From the TUXEDO-2 Trial.

Patients with diabetes mellitus and multivessel coronary artery disease represent a high-risk subgroup in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) requiring optimal antiplatelet therapy. Dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin plus a P2Y12 inhibitor is the standard of care after percutaneous coronary intervention to prevent stent thrombosis and recurrent ischemic events. Ticagrelor and prasugrel are potent P2Y12 inhibitors that have each demonstrated superior efficacy over clopidogrel in large trials, though their comparative merits have been debated, especially in complex diabetic populations. This revi

A Whole-Head Finite Element Model for Electrical Neuromodulation via Visual Brain-Machine Interfaces.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) for vision restoration require models that accurately simulate the anatomy and electrical properties of visual pathways. However, current models focus only on isolated structures, such as the retina or brain, and overlook surrounding tissues. Here, we present a comprehensive computational model of the human head that incorporates the entire visual pathway-including the eye, optic nerve, and brain-along with critical neighboring tissues such as the orbit and paranasal sinuses, thereby enabling precise simulations. Validation using human and large-animal data show

Morphological, Histological and Ultrastructural Characterization of the Common Dolphin's Adrenal Glands.

The adrenal glands are central regulators of endocrine function and stress physiology, yet detailed species-specific anatomical baselines remain limited in cetaceans. This study provides a comprehensive gross, histological, morphometric, and ultrastructural characterization of the adrenal glands in 55 short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) examined postmortem in the Canary Islands. Adrenal glands were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically, and histological corticomedullary ratios were calculated from mid-transverse sections. Associations with body length, sexual maturity, and

Managing Orbital Floor Fractures With Three-Dimensional (3D)-Printed Surgical Guides: A Narrative Review.

Orbital floor fractures are a common consequence of maxillofacial trauma and can result in significant functional and esthetic morbidity, including diplopia, enophthalmos, and impaired ocular motility if not accurately reconstructed. Conventional freehand orbital floor reconstruction relies heavily on intraoperative judgment and visual estimation, which may compromise precision, particularly in complex defects involving posterior orbital anatomy. The objective of this review is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness, accuracy, and feasibility of three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific

The Median Palatine Suture: A Comprehensive Review With Clinical Considerations.

The median palatine suture (MPS) is an articulation in the midsagittal plane in the oral cavity's roof that divides the palate into two halves. Its anterior and posterior segments are formed by the fusion of the maxillary palatine processes and the horizontal plates of the palatine bones, respectively. This review synthesizes the classical understanding of the MPS with recent multidisciplinary advancements to provide a contemporary and holistic perspective. We delve into its comparative anatomy and evolutionary origins, and further detail the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing its dev

The insect head rewound: Clarifications to the groundplan of Hexapoda (Pancrustacea).

The organization of the hexapod head remains a cornerstone problem in arthropod systematics, central to segmental homology, character definition, higher-level phylogeny, and functional and evolutionary morphology. Recently, Nel et al. (2025) proposed an alternative interpretation of insect head segmentation that departs markedly from established anatomical and comparative frameworks. We evaluate the internal consistency and external coherence of that hypothesis using their model groups, broader taxonomic samples, prior studies (including crustaceomorph Pancrustacea) and our own investigations.
