Lipomatous variant of angiomyofibroblastoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Angiomyofibroblastoma represents a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor with a predilection for the vulvovaginal region. Lipomatous change may occur but rarely comprises a substantial component of the lesion. There are only eight reports in the English language literature describing the lipomatous variant of this tumor. We describe a further lipomatous angiomyofibroblastoma that occurred on the labium majus of a 49-year-old woman. The histopathologic and immunohistochemical features are described, and the collective experience in the literature is reviewed.

Treatment of adenoma sebaceum with the copper vapor laser.

BACKGROUND: Angiofibromas of the central part of the face (adenoma sebaceum) occur pathognomonically in tuberous sclerosis, causing significant cosmetic and hygienic morbidity. Treatment has included excision, dermabrasion, cryosurgery, carbon dioxide laser, and argon laser. Copper vapor lasers emit light at 511 nm (green) ad 578 nm (yellow), useful for treating pigmented and vascular lesions, respectively. OBJECTIVE: Because of the vascular nature and progressive pigmentation of adenoma sebaceum, we examined the utility of the copper vapor laser in treating this disorder. METHODS: Nine pati…

Patients with soft tissue tumor entities such as hemangioma, glomangiopericytoma, angiofibroma, and hamartoma were all symptomatic and underwent surgical resection. CONCLUSION: Understanding and recognizing the spectrum of appearances of benign mesenchymal sinonasal tumors will improve patient assessment and clinical management. The pathogno …

MEN1 clinical background.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is a rare hereditary tumor syndrome predisposing to tumor development in several endocrine organs. Its major manifestations include hyperparathyroidism, tumors of endocrine pancreas and pituitary. Beside these three, several other endocrine (adrenocortical, foregut carcinoid) and nonendocrine (lipoma, angiofibroma, collagenoma, ependymoma, meningioma) tumors have been described to be associated with this syndrome. Both familial and sporadic forms of the disease are known. The diagnosis of MEN1 can be established if two of the three major manifestation…

[Solitary subependymal giant cell astrocytoma: a forme fruste of tuberous sclerosis complex?].

Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) is usually associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS) and believed to originate from subependymal nodules. We report a rare case of SEGA in a patient lacking symptoms of TS. Radiological findings, including CT and MRI, were characteristic of SEGA, but the preoperative diagnosis was difficult due to the fact that no other features of TS were present. TS has been classically characterized by the clinical presence of Vogt's triad of seizure, facial angiofibroma and mental retardation, however, few cases present with all of these manifestations. In 1998, Roa…

A mouse model of multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 1, develops multiple endocrine tumors.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant cancer syndrome, characterized primarily by multiple tumors in the parathyroid glands, endocrine pancreas, and anterior pituitary. Other tumors, including gastrinoma, carcinoid, adrenal cortical tumors, angiofibroma, collagenoma, and lipoma, also occur in some patients. Individuals with MEN1 almost always have loss-of-function mutations in the MEN1 gene on chromosome 11, and endocrine tumors arising in these patients usually show somatic loss of the remaining wild-type allele. To examine the role of MEN1 in tumor formation, a …

Tuberous sclerosis associated with neurofibromatosis: report of a case.

Neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis are phakomatous syndrome diseases. They are both inherited as autosomal dominant diseases. Neurofibromatosis type 1 and tuberous sclerosis very seldom occur together. We report a 16-year-old male who had characteristics of these two diseases. This patient had all the criteria for a definitive diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis such as: classical shagreen patches, periungual fibroma, retinal hamartomata, facial angiofibroma, renal angiomyolipomata, and subependymal glial nodules on computed tomography. He also had the three presumptive diagnostic criteria: …

MITF Activation Is a Feature of Clear Cell and Conventional Fibrous Papule.

Fibrous papule, also known as angiofibroma, is a common benign cutaneous lesion with a predilection for the nose and, to a lesser extent, other parts of the face. Most cases occur sporadically, although similar lesions occur in tuberous sclerosis where they are sometimes referred to as adenoma sebaceum. In addition to conventional fibrous papule, several morphologic subtypes have been described which are much less common and may be more challenging to recognize. Clear cell fibrous papule is distinguished by its voluminous clear cytoplasm and the expression of NKI-C3, a marker of lysosomes. Her…

Tuberous sclerosis with recurrent seizure, dermatological lesions, renal cysts, and hypothyroidism in a female patient in Awka, Nigeria.

The incidence of tuberous sclerosis seems to be rising in Nigeria. Tuberous sclerosis with cerebral, renal, thyroid, and dermatological manifestations have not been completely identified. This case report documents a rare case of tuberous sclerosis with cerebral and dermatological lesions, renal cysts, and hypothyroid state. A 28-year-old female patient who presented in our clinic with a history of recurrent seizures for 19 years, a shagreen patch on the right lumbar area, scarring alopecia, and puckering facial angiofibroma. No member of her family had a similar illness. Computerized tomograp…

Birt-Hogg-Dubé Syndrome: Diagnostic Journey of Three Cases from Skin to Gene.

Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHDS) is a rare disorder characterized by the triad of cutaneous lesions, renal tumors, lung cysts and inactivation of the gene folliculin (FLCN). Here, we present three female patients diagnosed with BHDS. First case a 55-year-old female had flesh moles histopathology compatible with angiofibroma, multiple cysts in the lung and kidneys, FLCN gene mutations ('c.1285dupC [p.His429Profs*]' 11th exon and 'c.653G>A [p.Arg258His]' 7th exon). The second case a 76-year-old female had trichodiscoma on her skin, multiple cysts in the lung, spontaneous pneumothorax, FLCN gene mu…

The aim of this article is to review the indications, diagnosis and treatment of patients with maxillary tumors operated at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center during the period 1999 - 2008. METHODS: A total of 174 patients underwent surgery due to neoplasms originating in the maxillary sinus: 118 patients (68%) had malignant and 54 (32%) had benign tumors. RESULTS: The most common malignancy was squamous cell carcinoma (40%), and the most common benign tumor was juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (36%). A total of 146…
