Frequency response characteristics of ankle plantar flexors in humans following spinal cord injury: relation to degree of spasticity.

Frequency response characteristics of the ankle plantar flexors were studied in adults both with and without spinal cord injury (SCI) to determine how the muscle contractile properties change after SCI. and to see if there is a relation between the severity of spasticity and how the properties change. Ten controls and ten complete, chronic spinal cord injured subjects were tested, where the tibial nerve was stimulated electrically in a stochastic manner with the ankle fixed isometrically at various joint angles. A nonparametric linear frequency response function was derived, from which a secon

Clinical and social status following injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle. Follow-up of 144 patients treated conservatively.

Out of 174 patients treated conservatively for injuries to the lateral ligaments of the ankle 144 were seen at follow-up after 3.1--6.1 years (mean 4.2 years), and clinical as well as social sequelae were recorded. The diagnostic criterion was a difference in talar tilt of 6 or more degrees between the injured and uninjured foot on inversion stress radiographs. Occupational and athletic injuries, almost equally represented, made up a total of 64 per cent. Residual symptoms were present in 21 per cent, mainly in the form of functional instability, but only four patients (3 per cent) reported da

A Single-Center Retrospective Study on the Clinical Outcomes of TightRope Fixation Versus Syndesmotic Screw Fixation in the Management of Acute Traumatic Ankle Syndesmotic Injuries.

Background Ankle fractures are one of the most common presentations in orthopaedic surgery and represent the third most frequent musculoskeletal injury in the elderly population. Syndesmotic injuries can be associated with ankle fractures, and surgical intervention is critical in these injuries to restore stability and prevent long-term disability. Traditionally, syndesmotic screw fixation has been the standard treatment for acute traumatic syndesmotic injuries, but controversies regarding this fixation method remain. Over recent years, the TightRope system (Arthrex, Florida, US) has gained po

Evaluation of Transsyndesmotic Fixation and Primary Deltoid Ligament Repair in Ankle Fractures With Suspected Combined Deltoid Ligament Injury.

The present prospective study examined the utility of the intraoperative tap test/technique for distal tibiofibular syndesmosis in the diagnosis of deltoid ligament rupture and compared the outcomes of transsyndesmotic fixation to deltoid ligament repair with suture anchor. This diagnostic technique was performed in 59 ankle fractures with suspected deltoid ligament injury. The width of the medial clear space of 59 cases was evaluated to assess the sensitivity and specificity. Those with deltoid ligament rupture were randomly assigned to 2 groups and treated with deltoid ligament repair with a

History-dependent changes in the recovery process of the middle latency cutaneous reflex gain after ankle sprain injury.

PURPOSE: We previously reported that suppressive middle latency cutaneous reflexes (MLRs) in the peroneus longus (PL) are exaggerated in subjects with chronic ankle instability, and the changes are related to functional instability. However, the time-varying history of these neurophysiological changes after an ankle sprain is yet to be elucidated. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the time course of the changes in the PL MLR after an ankle sprain in relation to the number of sprain recurrences. METHODS: Twenty-three subjects with ankle sprain were classified into 3 groups accor

Effects of spinal cord injury-induced changes in muscle activation on foot drag in a computational rat ankle model.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to changes in muscle activation patterns and atrophy of affected muscles. Moderate levels of SCI are typically associated with foot drag during the swing phase of locomotion. Foot drag is often used to assess locomotor recovery, but the causes remain unclear. We hypothesized that foot drag results from inappropriate muscle coordination preventing flexion at the stance-to-swing transition. To test this hypothesis and to assess the relative contributions of neural and muscular changes on foot drag, we developed a two-dimensional, one degree of freedom ankle musc

Acute compartment syndrome secondary to disruption of the perforating branch of the peroneal artery following an acute inversion injury to the ankle.

INTRODUCTION: Although ankle sprain by inversion is common in daily practice, acute compartment syndrome following ankle inversion injury is unusual. Only a few cases of this uncommon entity have been reported. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report describes a case of acute compartment syndrome following severe inversion of an ankle injury secondary to disruption of the perforating branch of the peroneal artery 3h after the trauma. Although emergent fasciotomy was performed, residual weakness of ankle dorsiflexion still presented six months after surgery. DISCUSSION: To the best of our knowledge
