A 23-year-old Turkish woman was admitted with an infection of the left thumb. The clinical picture was typical for cutaneous anthrax. Microbiological tests confirmed the diagnosis 'infection by Bacillus anthracis'. She recovered when treated with penicillin, although later tests revealed that the bacteria were resistant to this antibiotic. The patient became infected in Belgium as a result of wounding herself on the teeth of an illegally slaughtered sheep, which had possibly become infected in the pasture. Recognising the characteristic clinical picture of cutaneous anthrax is essential for pr…

These recommendations concern the use of aluminum hydroxide adsorbed cell-free anthrax vaccine (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed [AVA], BioPort Corporation, Lansing, MI) in the United States for protection against disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. In addition, information is included regarding the use of chemoprophylaxis against B. anthracis.

Anthrax is a zoonotic illness recognized since antiquity. Today, human anthrax has been all but eradicated from the industrialized world, with the vast majority of practitioners in the United States unlikely to have seen a case. Unfortunately, the disease remains endemic in many areas of the world, and anthrax poses a threat as a mass casualty-producing weapon if used in a biological warfare capacity.

Although anthrax is one of the oldest recognized infectious diseases in the world, it remains widespread particularly in tropical zones such as Africa. The impact of this major zoonoses is further enhanced by the fact that the pulmonary form can be used for biological warfare. Recently there has been a revival of interest in anthrax and research has benefited greatly from advances in molecular biology. The main factors accounting for the virulence of Bacillus anthracis have been elucidated. The author reports current data concerning pathogenesis, epidemiology and diagnosis and reviews progress…

Bacillus anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax, a serious and often fatal disease of wild and domestic animals. Central to the persistence of anthrax in an area is the ability of B. anthracis to form long-lasting, highly resistant spores. Understanding the ecology of anthrax spores is essential if one hopes to control epidemics. Studies on the ecology of anthrax have found a correlation between the disease and specific soil factors, such as alkaline pH, high moisture, and high organic content. Researchers initially suggested that these factors influenced vegetative anthrax bacilli. Howev…

A 41-year-old male patient was treated with penicillin for cutaneous anthrax affecting the region of the right eye. He was also given dexamethasone for 3 days to combat extensive oedema which was causing respiratory difficulty because of tracheal compression. After the oedema had resolved and the typical necrotic black eschar of anthrax had evolved, he developed acute inflammation of the right temporal artery. We believe this is the first report of this type of complication of anthrax.

The authors report a detailed study of utilization of a skin test with anthraxin to perform a retrospective diagnosis of anthrax in humans who suffered from anthrax 45 days to 31 years after recovery. For a total of 884 persons studied, 762 showed a positive skin test (86.2%). This index was 92.8% for persons tested 45 days to 3 years after convalescence, 82.8% 4 to 15 years after convalescence and 72.7% 16-31 years after recovery. The site of the primary carbuncle on the skin of the fingers, hands, face and neck gave an index of positivity (88.2%) statistically greater (p = 99%) than by local…

Bacillus anthracis caused the death of five cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) on a farm in the Gobabis district in Namibia. The mode of infection was believed to be a freshly shot baboon (Papio ursinus) with a cutaneous anthrax lesion.

The authors describe a comparatively simple method of the preparation of an anthrax protective antigen and its evaluation. Attention is drawn to many obstacles that may arise during its production and emphasis is laid on the fact that the serological activity of the protective antigen should not be overestimated.

Between 20 and 22 June 1974, three captive carnivores (two genets, Genetta sp. and one caracal, Felis caracal) died suddenly in the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden without previous signs of illness. Bacillus anthracis was isolated from their blood and tissues. The organism was highly pathogenic to laboratory animals. The disease was believed to have been contracted from meat fed the animals.
