Although microscopic studies have shown similarities between bursal and joint membranes, little is known about bursae and their response to disease states. Eighty-six cases of superficial bursitis due to trauma, bacterial infection, or gout were reviewed and compared with cases of joint inflammation due to the same etiologies. In traumatic bursitis the bursal fluid mucin test was more abnormal and the viscosity lower than that of joint fluid in traumatic arthritis. Haemophilus influenzae is serologically classified into two main categories based on the presence or absence of the polysaccharide capsule. Strains that possess polysaccharide capsules are identified as typeable Haemophilus influenzae, whereas strains that do not have capsules are identified as non-typeable Haemophilus influenza. Digital vasculitis complicating RA is not infrequent and is usually benign but may herald the onset of systemic vasculitis. A case is reported of a man with longstanding seropositive RA who developed digital vasculitis in association with septicaemia and multiple joint sepsis. Awareness that the onset of digital vasculitis in RA may be related to infection is important. This is especially so since aggressive immunosuppressive therapy is often used in patients with systemic vasculitis.

Inflammatory rhumatisms simulating rheumatoid arthritis belong to the manifestations of the reactions of leprosy. Pathology of these arthritis variate with the type of reaction. In the present observations, it must probably be the transition from a tuberculoid leprosy to a lepromatosis form in which the immunological state looks like the lupus one.

Debilitated calves are often presented with an umbilical remnant infection, septic arthritis, or both. These comorbidities, frequently caused by similar bacteria, must be addressed surgically.
