Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder and associated functional impairments in mentally disordered offenders.

This study examines the rate of attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated functional impairments in mentally disordered offenders (MDOs). One hundred and thirty-one male MDOs with a primary diagnosis of either severe mental illness (SMI) or personality disorder (PD) completed screening questionnaires for ADHD. If positive, they were invited for a comprehensive diagnostic interview. Additional data pertaining to self-rated impairments, and objective records of critical incidents and episodes of seclusion were obtained from patient records. Twenty-six patients screened posit

Increased gender variance in autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Evidence suggests over-representation of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and behavioral difficulties among people referred for gender issues, but rates of the wish to be the other gender (gender variance) among different neurodevelopmental disorders are unknown. This chart review study explored rates of gender variance as reported by parents on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) in children with different neurodevelopmental disorders: ASD (N = 147, 24 females and 123 males), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; N = 126, 38 females and 88 males), or a medical neurodevelopmental dis

Clinical correlates of oppositional defiant disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults.

OBJECTIVE: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a common comorbidity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in both children and adolescents. Although there is research demonstrating that ADHD persists into adulthood, less is known about the frequency of its persistence, clinical characteristics, and impairment when associated with comorbid ODD in adults with ADHD. METHOD: Data from a randomized clinical trial of adults with ADHD were analyzed to determine the prevalence and clinical correlates of comorbid ODD. As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fo

Early childhood temperament in pediatric bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Recent theories suggest that children with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) may exhibit more difficult temperaments premorbidly, including traits such as behavioral disinhibition and difficulty with emotion regulation. We investigated temperament characteristics retrospectively during infancy and toddlerhood in subjects with PBD (n=25), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n=25), and healthy controls (n=25). Children with PBD were reported to experience increased difficult temperament in both infancy and toddlerhood compared to children with ADHD. Several characteristics of difficul

Atomoxetine for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents with bipolar disorders.

Children and adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) have a high incidence of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this paper, we report a consecutive case series on 7 patients with pediatric BD and ADHD who were treated with atomoxetine-and all but one were also treated in conjunction with mood stabilizers. All patients were outpatients at the Stanford Pediatric Bipolar Disorders Clinic. Information on patients was collected in a retrospective chart review. All but 1 patient demonstrated significant improvement in symptoms of ADHD. No patients had episodes of hypomania

Asymmetry of attentive networks contributes to adult Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) pathophysiology.

Diffusion imaging studies in Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have revealed alterations in anatomical brain connections, such as the fronto-parietal connection known as superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF). Studies in neurotypical adults have shown that the three SLF branches (SLF I, II, III) support distinct brain functions, such as attention and inhibition; and that their pattern of lateralization is associated with attention performance. However, most studies in ADHD have investigated the SLF as a single bundle and in children; thus, the potential contribution of the latera

Adaptive control deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): the role of error processing.

Cognitive performance of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by large moment-to-moment fluctuations in cognitive control reflected by a highly inconsistent and inaccurate response style. It has been suggested that abnormal error processing underlies this failure to implement adequate control. We investigated the error-related negativity (ERN), a negative deflection in the event-related potential (ERP) time-locked to erroneous responses in 16 rigorously screened ADHD boys aged 8-12 years and 16 age-matched normal control boys during a modified Eriksen

Growth deficits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder revisited: impact of gender, development, and treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Although the relationship between putative growth deficits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been examined in boys, this issue has not been evaluated in girls. METHODS: Height and weight were examined in 124 female ADHD children and 116 female controls using age and parental height corrections, attending to issues of pubertal stage and treatment. Also, we examined the interaction between ADHD status and gender on growth outcomes using data from 124 ADHD and 109 control males. RESULTS: The ADHD-growth association was not moderated by gender. No deficits in age

Different executive function impairments in medication-naïve children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder comorbid with oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.

The impairment of executive functions (EFs) in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might vary from one individual to another, indicating high heterogeneity. Comorbidity may contribute to this heterogeneity. Disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), is the most common comorbidity in ADHD. Although many studies suggest that ADHD with CD (ADHDCD+) and ADHD with ODD (ADHDODD+) should be treated differently, little research has attempted to separate these two disorders when studying the EFs and brain imaging of ADHD wit

Serum ferritin in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder of uncertain etiology. Iron is crucial for brain function and dopamine regulation, but prior studies examining its association with ADHD have produced inconsistent results. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare serum ferritin concentrations in children with ADHD versus healthy controls. METHOD: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A compr

Parenting stressors, social support, and mental health of mothers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to have a tendency toward poor mental health. This study aimed to identify specific parenting stressors impacting maternal mental health as well as the social support that buffers against those stressors in mothers of children with ADHD. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with Japanese mothers of children under 18 years of age diagnosed with ADHD. The Questionnaires included attributes of participants and their children with ADHD, parenting stressors assessed by the Developmental Disord

Pattern of Oculomotor Findings in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Relation to Methylphenidate Treatment.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be associated with alterations in eye movements, which in turn may reflect dysfunctions in executive functions and sensorimotor integration processes. This review analyzed the pattern of oculomotor findings of pediatric populations diagnosed with ADHD with or without methylphenidate (MPH) treatment, with the aim of systematically describing the oculomotor abnormalities observed in affected children. A total of 24 studies were analyzed. The results showed that children with ADHD exhibit increased latency, a higher number of directional errors

Multi-tissue transcriptome-wide association study identifies 29 risk genes associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common heritable neurodevelopmental disorder, affecting ~7 million children (11.4%) in the U.S. However, ADHD's underlying genetic architecture remains largely unknown. Transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS), which integrate expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and GWAS summary data, can identify differentially expressed risk genes underlying complex phenotypes. Here we conduct a TWAS of ADHD using expression data from multiple brain tissues to improve understanding of the complex genetic architecture underlying this

A brief review of MRI studies in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and future perspectives.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that significantly affects academic, occupational, and social functioning. This review summarizes key findings of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies investigating the neural underpinnings of ADHD, focusing on T1-weighted structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), task-based functional MRI (task fMRI), and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). T1-weighted structural MRI studies have revealed r

Movement-related cortical potentials underlying motor preparation and execution in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Motor control difficulties are highly common in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), yet the etiology of this comorbidity remains unclear. We examined (1) whether children with ADHD have atypical movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) during movement preparation and/or execution compared to typically developing (TD) children, and (2) whether MRCPs associated with visual-motor performance and ADHD symptoms overlap. METHODS: MRCPs and visual-motor integration (VMI) were measured among 66 right-handed children with ADHD and 30 TD children (ages 7-11 years). Caregiver
