Vascular permeability in the peripheral autonomic and somatic nervous systems: controversial aspects and comparisons with the blood-brain barrier.

Endothelium, choroidal epithelium, and arachnoid exclude plasma proteins from most parts of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Nerve roots, in contrast, have permeable capillaries and permeable pia-arachnoid sheaths. Diffusion of plasma proteins into the cerebrospinal fluid is probably prevented by slow bulk flow along a pressure gradient from the subarachnoid space into the veins of the roots. In nerves, the perineurium prevents diffusion of proteins from the epineurium into the endoneurium. Capillaries within fascicles are permeable to macromolecules, though less so than the microve

Exploring the Impact of Yoga on Autonomic Nervous System Function, Social Functioning, and Quality of Life in People with IBS.

As per the Rome IV criteria, a disorder of gut-brain interaction such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain occurring at least 1 day per week for the previous 3 months and associated changes in bowel movements (defecation, stool frequency, or stool form). These symptoms must have begun at least 6 months prior to diagnosis. IBS affects 4% to 7% of the Indian population, with a higher prevalence observed in women and younger individuals. The present randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of a 3-month yoga intervention on IBS management. The

Effects of electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area on the autonomic nervous system and cerebral blood flow in the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system and trigeminal nerve are involved in adjusting flow through diverging cerebral arteries in the prefrontal cortex. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 100 Hz electroacupuncture (EA) to the trigeminal nerve area on cerebral blood flow and autonomic nervous system function. METHOD: This was a randomised crossover study of 16 healthy volunteers who were assigned to an EA or control group. Stimulation (in the EA group) was performed five times, each after 1 min of rest. Needles were inserted at the inner edge of the eyebrows and 1 cm from…

[Study on the postnatal neuro-behavioral development in rats treated prenatally with drugs acting on the autonomic nervous systems].

The drugs used were methamphetamine, reserpine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, propranolol, chlorpromazine, haloperidol, pilocarpine and atrop … d atropine treated groups. These findings suggest that the prenatal exposure to drugs acting on the autonomic nervous system may produce adverse effects on the behavioral development of pups; However, the adverse effects were more apparent by postnatal exposure than by prenatal exposure.

Time-course changes in autonomic nervous system activity after pulsed-field ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: comparison with cryoballoon ablation.

BACKGROUND: The effect of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using pulsed-field ablation (PFA) on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has not been well characterized. This study assessed changes in ANS activity following PFA using heart rate variability analysis, compared with changes after cryoballoon ablation (CBA). METHODS: We retrospectively included patients who underwent de novo PVI for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using PFA (n = 53) or CBA (n = 190). Frequency-domain analysis—including low- and high-frequency power (LF and HF)—and time-domain analysis of the RR interval and its standard de…

Evaluating Associations and Contributing Factors of Descending Pain Modulation and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Chronic and Nonchronic Knee Pain.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization in individuals with knee pain is associated with altered autonomic nervous system activity and descending pain modulation; however, the exact nature of these relationships remains unclear. We have hypothesized that chronic knee pain (CKP) disrupts the relationship between autonomic nervous system activity and conditioned pain modulation, whereas nonchronic knee pain (nCKP) does not. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between autonomic nervous system activity and descending pain modulation as well as to identify factors contributing to dys…

[Involvement of autonomic nervous system since middle age in elderly patient with giant axonal neuropathy caused by novel genetic mutation].

A 69-year-old man began to experience difficulty with walking at the age of 5 years and started use of a cane at around 13 years, then finally started using a wheelchair at 17 years old. A diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease was previously determined at another hospital, though neither peripheral nerve biopsy nor gene analysis was conducted. He visited our institution at the age of 54 years and irregular outpatient examinations were started, which indicated slowly progressive muscle weakness and sensory disturbance of the limbs, leading to a decline in activities of daily living. Automatic Classification of Adult Males With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder by Non-contact Measurement of Autonomic Nervous System Activation.

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit atypicality in various domains of behavior. Previous psychophysiological studies have revealed an atypical pattern of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activation induced by psychosocial stimulation. Thus, it might be feasible to develop a novel assessment tool to evaluate the risk of ASD by measuring ANS activation in response to emotional stimulation. The present study investigated whether people with ASD could be automatically classified from neurotypical adults based solely on physiological data obtained by the recently introduced non-contact…

Linking Pain Sensation to the Autonomic Nervous System: The Role of the Anterior Cingulate and Periaqueductal Gray Resting-State Networks.

There are bi-directional interactions between the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and pain. This is likely underpinned by a substantial overlap between brain areas of the central autonomic network and areas involved in pain processing and modulation. To date, however, relatively little is known about the neuronal substrates of the ANS-pain association. Here, we acquired resting state fMRI scans in 21 healthy subjects at rest and during tonic noxious cold stimulation. As indicators of autonomic function, we examined how heart rate variability (HRV) frequency measures were influenced by tonic nox…

The short-term impact of the catheter ablation on noninvasive autonomic nervous system parameters in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a potentially potent modulator of the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation (AF), whereas the presence of AF can activate and alter the ANS. The catheter ablation of AF (AFCA) may cause the cardiac ANS dysfunction, whereas restoration of sinus rhythm or sympathovagal imbalance by AFCA can reverse this process. Our principal goal was to investigate the short-term effect of AFCA on ANS functions evaluated by noninvasive chronotropic (CI), resting heart rate (RHR), and heart rate recovery (HRR) indices. METHOD: A total of 45 patients…
