OBJECTIVES: An untreated dilated aortic annulus is a major risk factor for failure of aortic valve-sparing operations or repair of either bicuspid or tricuspid valve. Aortic annuloplasty efficiently reduces the annulus and increases the coaptation height, thus protecting the repair. Between 1964 and 1987, 232 airplanes crashed within 50 nautical miles of Aspen, CO; 90% were general aviation crashes. A total of 202 people died and 69 were seriously injured. The societal cost averaged more than $4 million annually. This study investigated the psychological stress and psychiatric symptomatology in a representative sample of pilots involved in a labor dispute with management. Standardized epidemiological psychometric instruments revealed that one quarter of the pilots could be labelled "psychologically at risk" showing elevated symptoms of anger-hostility, paranoia, and obsessive-compulsiveness.
