BACKGROUND: Liver resection is a major curative option in patients presenting with hepatocellular carcinoma. An inadequate functional liver remnant is a major limiting factor precluding liver resection. In recent years, hypertrophy of the functional liver remnant after selective internal radiation therapy hypertrophy has been observed, but the degree of hypertrophy in the early postselective internal radiation therapy period has not been well studied.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study on patients undergoing unilobar, Yttrium-90 selective internal radiation therapy for hepatocellular c

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic tumor cells can reduce the efficacy of radiation. Antiangiogenic therapy may transiently "normalize" the tumor vasculature to make it more efficient for oxygen delivery. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the recombinant human endostatin (endostar) can create a "vascular normalization window" to alleviate hypoxia and enhance the inhibitory effects of radiation therapy in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in mice.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Transient changes in morphology of tumor vasculature and hypoxic tumor cell fraction in response to endostar were

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are critical cytotoxic lesions. Inherited defects in DNA DSB repair pathways lead to hypersensitivity to ionising radiation, immunodeficiency and increased cancer incidence. A patient with xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group C, with a scalp angiosarcoma, exhibited dramatic clinical radiosensitivity following radiotherapy, resulting in death. A fibroblast cell line from non-affected skin (XP14BRneo17) was hypersensitive to ionising radiation and defective in DNA DSB repair.
AIM: To determine the genetic defect causing cel

BACKGROUND: Over 85% of pediatric orbital rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) are cured with combined chemotherapy and radiation. However, the late effects of photon radiation compromise function and cosmetic outcome. Proton radiation can provide excellent tumor dose distributions while sparing normal tissues better than photon irradiation.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Conformal 3D photon and proton radiotherapy plans were generated for children treated with proton irradiation for orbital RMS at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dose-volume histograms (90%, 50%, 10%) were generated and compared for important orbi

We have previously shown that chronic exposure of plateau-phase C3H 10 T1/2 cells to (60)Co gamma radiation at doses as low as 10 cGy protected the cells against neoplastic transformation by a subsequent large acute radiation exposure. We have also shown that this induced resistance to neoplastic transformation correlated with an increased ability to repair radiation-induced chromosome breaks. We now show that a single exposure of quiescent cells to doses as low as 0.1 cGy also reduces the risk of neoplastic transformation, from the spontaneous level to a rate three- to fourfold below that lev

BACKGROUND: Although radiation therapy (RT) remains one of the most effective treatments for patients with the lethal brain tumor glioblastoma (GBM), quite a number of patients show resistance or relapse shortly after RT. There is an urgent need to uncover the temporal and spatial dynamics of RT resistance during tumor progression and treatment.
METHODS: The radio-resistance signature score (RRSS) was calculated by utilizing glioma sphere-forming cells (GSCs) which recapitulate the transcriptomic landscape of GBM.
RESULTS: RRSS can assess the RT response on both cell lines and GBM patients.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Chronic radiation proctitis is a prevalent condition following pelvic radiation therapy, occasionally leading to significant blood loss. Although medical treatment and argon plasma coagulation (APC) are well-established options, endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an emerging treatment that has shown promising results in smaller studies. However, further research, particularly on long-term outcomes, is necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcome of endoscopic RFA in patients with chronic radiation proctitis, with a particular focus on long-t

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced rectal cancer can cause severe symptomatic pelvic morbidity such as pain, haemorrhage or bowel obstruction for frail or metastatic patients, which are often unfit to undergo surgery or intense systemic treatment. The most frequent radiation schedule is 25 Gy/ 5f but the optimal dose is yet to determine. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review on the efficacy and toxicity of the published radiation schedules of palliative rectal cancer.
METHODS: Systematic literature of the Medline, Embase and Cochrane library databases were performed throughout the year 2023. P

BACKGROUND: The local tumor control rate of colon cancer by radiotherapy is unsatisfactory due to recurrence and radioresistance. Ginsenoside Rh2 (Rh2), a panoxadiol saponin, possesses various antitumor effects.
METHODS: CT26/luc murine colon carcinoma cells and a CT26/luc tumor-bearing animal model were used to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of Rh2 combined with ionizing radiation and the underlying mechanisms.
RESULTS: Rh2 caused cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase in CT26/luc cells; however, when combined with ionizing radiation, the cells were arrested at the G2/M phase. Rh2 was foun

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure of radiation among medical radiation workers contributes to the subsequent increased risk of thyroid cancer. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators of cancer biology. However, little is known about lncRNA expression in thyroid cancer tissues from patients who are exposed to medical occupational radiation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the transcriptomes difference between thyroid cancer tissues and adjacent nonneoplastic thyroid tissues.
METHODS: Microarray technology was used in this study. Quantitative reverse transcript

BACKGROUND: Chromosome translocations are a biomarker of cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation. We examined the relation between the frequency of translocations and cosmic radiation dose in 83 male airline pilots.
METHODS: Translocations were scored using fluorescence in situ hybridization chromosome painting. Cumulative radiation doses were estimated from individual flight records. Excess rate and log-linear Poisson regression models were evaluated.
RESULTS: Pilots' estimated median cumulative absorbed dose was 15 mGy (range 4.5-38). No association was observed between translocation fre
