Quantifying Impairments in Swallowing Safety and Efficiency in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Parkinson's Disease.

Dysphagia is a largely inevitable symptom in both progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Parkinson's disease (PD). To date, comparative studies in these diseases have failed to detect differences in the severity of impairments in swallowing safety or efficiency, potentially due to small sample sizes and outcome measures with low sensitivity. Therefore, this study sought to address these limitations by using novel measurement methodology to comprehensively compare swallowing safety and efficiency impairments between these populations in order to better understand whether differences may exist

Clinical and developmental characteristics of cognitive subgroups in a transdiagnostic sample of schizophrenia spectrum disorders and bipolar disorder.

Evidence suggests that neurocognitive dysfunction is a transdiagnostic feature of individuals across the continuum between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, there is significant heterogeneity of neuropsychological and social-cognitive abilities in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. The current study aimed to investigate the clinical and developmental characteristics of cognitive subgroups within the schizo-bipolar spectrum. 147 clinically stable patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder were assessed using clinical rating scales for

Assembly and phylogeographical analysis of novel Taenia solium mitochondrial genomes suggest stratification within the African-American genotype.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium is a parasite of public health concern, causing human taeniasis and cysticercosis. Two main genotypes have been identified: Asian and African-American. Although characterizing T. solium genotypes is crucial to understanding the genetic epidemiology of its diseases, not much is known about the differences between T. solium mitochondrial genomes from different genotypes. Also, little is known about whether genotypes are further subdivided. Therefore, this study aimed to identify a set of point mutations distributed throughout the T. solium mitochondrial genome that diff

Reshaping the diagnostic borders: Historical analysis of the diagnostic changes following the introduction of the schizophrenia concept.

BACKGROUND: Although the concept of schizophrenia is still widely presented as having replaced that of dementia praecox, studies have shown that the former was broader than the latter, resulting in a more complex diagnostic redistribution. However, this is poorly documented by quantitative approaches. AIMS: We sought to test the hypothesis that the use of the concept of schizophrenia had caused a diagnostic redistribution and to quantify it. METHOD: A retrospective study, based on admission register archives of the Strasbourg University Clinic of Psychiatry was conducted. The frequency of di

Semiparametric multivariate joint model for skewed-longitudinal and survival data: A Bayesian approach.

Joint models and statistical inference for longitudinal and survival data have been an active area of statistical research and have mostly coupled a longitudinal biomarker-based mixed-effects model with normal distribution and an event time-based survival model. In practice, however, the following issues may standout: (i) Normality of model error in longitudinal models is a routine assumption, but it may be unrealistically violating data features of subject variations. (ii) Data collected are often featured by the mixed types of multiple longitudinal outcomes which are significantly correlated

Molecular evolution of dengue virus: a Bayesian approach using 1581 whole-genome sequences from January 1944 to July 2022.

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that has spread rapidly across all continents in recent years. There are four distinct but closely related serotypes of the virus that causes dengue (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). In the present study, we evaluated temporal spreading and molecular evolution of dengue virus (DENV) serotypes. Bayesian coalescent analysis was performed to study viral evolution, and it was estimated that the most recent common ancestor of DENV-1 was present in 1884 in Southeast Asia, that of DENV-2 was present in 1723 in Europe, that of DENV-3 was present

Bayesian inference for prediction of survival probability in prime-boost vaccination regimes.

We focus on Bayesian inference for survival probabilities in a prime-boost vaccination regime in the development of an Ebola vaccine. We are interested in the heterologous prime-boost regimen (unmatched vaccine deliverys using the same antigen) due to its demonstrated durable immunity, well-tolerated safety profile, and suitability as a population vaccination strategy. Our research is motivated by the need to estimate the survival probability given the administered dosage. To do so, we establish two key relationships. Firstly, we model the connection between the designed dose concentration and

Risk of Rabies and Implications for Postexposure Prophylaxis Administration in the US.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is often administered without a comprehensive and regionally appropriate rabies risk assessment. For low-risk exposures, this can result in patients incurring out-of-pocket expenses or experiencing adverse effects of PEP unnecessarily. OBJECTIVE: To use a model to estimate (1) the probability that an animal would test positive for rabies virus (RABV) given that a person was exposed, and (2) the probability that a person would die from rabies given that they were exposed to a suspect rabid animal and did not receive PEP, and to propo

Demographic patterns in Lyme borreliosis seasonality over 25 years.

Lyme borreliosis, the most common vector-borne disease in Europe and North America, is attracting growing concern due to its expanding geographic range. The growth in incidence and geographic spread is largely attributed to climate and land-use changes that support the tick vector and thereby increase disease risk. Despite a wide range of symptoms displayed by Lyme borreliosis patients, the demographic patterns in clinical manifestations and seasonal case timing have not been thoroughly investigated and may result from differences in exposure, immunity and pathogenesis. We analysed 25 years of

A multi-feature fusion decoding study for unilateral upper-limb fine motor imagery.

To address the fact that the classical motor imagination paradigm has no noticeable effect on the rehabilitation training of upper limbs in patients after stroke and the corresponding feature extraction algorithm is limited to a single domain, this paper describes the design of a unilateral upper-limb fine motor imagination paradigm and the collection of data from 20 healthy people. It presents a feature extraction algorithm for multi-domain fusion and compares the common spatial pattern (CSP), improved multiscale permutation entropy (IMPE) and multi-domain fusion features of all participants

Integrating Clinical Probability into the Diagnostic Approach to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: An International Working Group Perspective.

Background: When considering the diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), experienced clinicians integrate clinical features that help to differentiate IPF from other fibrosing interstitial lung diseases, thus generating a "pre-test" probability of IPF. The aim of this international working group perspective was to summarize these features using a tabulated approach similar to chest HRCT and histopathologic patterns reported in the international guidelines for the diagnosis of IPF, and to help formally incorporate these clinical likelihoods into diagnostic reasoning to facilitate the

External validation and comparison of MR-based radiomics models for predicting pathological complete response in locally advanced rectal cancer: a two-centre, multi-vendor study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) to develop and externally validate a multiparameter MR-based machine learning model to predict the pathological complete response (pCR) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT), and (2) to compare different classifiers' discriminative performance for pCR prediction. METHODS: This retrospective study includes 151 LARC patients divided into internal (centre A, n = 100) and external validation set (centre B, n = 51). The clinical and MR radiomics features were derived to construct clinical, ra

Leukemia classification using the deep learning method of CNN.

BACKGROUND: Processing Low-Intensity Medical Images (LI-MI) is difficult as outcomes are varied when it comes to manual examination, which is also a time-consuming process. OBJECTIVE: To improve the quality of low-intensity images and identify the leukemia classification by utilizing CNN-based Deep Learning (DCNN) strategy. METHODS: The strategies employed for the recognition of leukemia classifications in the advised strategy are DCNN (ResNet-34 & DenseNet-121). The histogram equalization-based adaptive gamma correction followed by guided filtering applies to study the improvement in intens

[Clinical trials in Radiation Oncology: Methodologic approach].

In the context of the clinical development of radiation oncology, the specificities of curative treatments and the necessary follow-ups for the acute and late tolerance evaluation require rigourous and up-dated methodological approaches given the limited feasibility of some studies to demonstrate their effectiveness. Indeed, the diversity of treatments in terms of delivery, type of radiation and multiple technologies render difficult the medical assessment. Although the randomized controlled trial is the gold standard for demonstrating the causal link of the treatment effect size, a state of t

Classification and Detection of Mesothelioma Cancer Using Feature Selection-Enabled Machine Learning Technique.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cancer of the mesothelium, sometimes referred to as malignant mesothelioma (MM), is an extremely uncommon form of the illness that almost always results in death. Chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy are all potential treatments for multiple myeloma; however, the majority of patients are identified with the disease at an advanced stage, at which time it is resistant to these therapies. After obtaining a diagnosis of advanced multiple myeloma, the average length of time that a person lives is one year after hearing this news. There is a substantial link between asbestos e

Evaluation of sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic criteria for Behçet's disease in the absence of a gold standard.

OBJECTIVE: The performance of existing diagnostic criteria for Behçet's disease (BD) is usually evaluated by comparison with expert opinions, which may be limited by misclassification and disagreement among experts. We aim to evaluate these criteria in the absence of a gold standard. METHODS: We obtained two datasets involving possible BD and other mimickers from a uveitis registry using case-cohort and nested case-control analyses, respectively. With a Bayesian inference approach, the sensitivity and specificity of International Study Group (ISG) and International Criteria for Behçet's Disea

Sequences of Events from the Electronic Medical Record and the Onset of Infection.

We present a novel model of time-series analysis to learn from electronic health record (EHR) data when infection occurred in the intensive care unit (ICU) by translating methods from proteomics and Bayesian statistics. Using 48,536 patients hospitalized in an ICU, we describe each hospital course as an 'alphabet' of 23 physician actions ('events') in temporal order. We analyze these as k-mers of length 3-12 events and apply a Bayesian model of (cumulative) relative risk (RR). The log2-transformed RR (median=0.248, mean=0.226) supported the conclusion that the events selected were individually

Childhood temperament and adulthood personality differentially predict life outcomes.

Debate has long surrounded whether temperament and personality are distinct sets of individual differences or are rather two sides of the same coin. To the extent that there are differences, it could indicate important developmental insights concerning the mechanisms responsible for linking traits with outcomes. One way to test this is to examine the joint and incremental predictive validity of temperament and personality in the same individuals across time. Using a longitudinal sample spanning 3 decades starting at infancy and followed up to 37 years old (N = 7081), we ran a series of Bayesia

Comparing PTSD symptom networks in type I vs. type II trauma survivors.

Background: Network analysis has gained increasing attention as a new framework to study complex associations between symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A number of studies have been published to investigate symptom networks on different sets of symptoms in different populations, and the findings have been inconsistent. Objective: We aimed to extend previous research by testing whether differences in PTSD symptom networks can be found in survivors of type I (single event; sudden and unexpected, high levels of acute threat) vs. type II (repeated and/or protracted; anticipated) t
