Relationship between individual categories of adverse childhood experience and diabetes in adulthood in a sample of US adults: Does it differ by gender?

AIMS: ACEs are known to increase risk for diabetes in adulthood. However, little is known about the differential impact of individual ACE categories on diabetes risk, and whether this relationship is gender specific. METHODS: Data from the 2011 BRFSS was used in this study. Participants included 48,526 adults who completed the ACE module across 5 states. Using logistic regression, we examined the odds of diabetes in adulthood related to eight individual categories of ACEs: sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, mental illness, substance abuse, incarceration, separation/divorce, and viole

Understanding Colorectal Cancer Screening Gaps Among Adults Aged 45-49.

INTRODUCTION: The United States Preventative Task Force recommends initiating colorectal cancer (CRC) screening at age 45, but screening rates among 45-49 y-olds has been lower than older age groups. Reasons for low screening rates among younger individuals are not clear. METHODS: Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2022 to 2024, we investigated factors associated with CRC screening among adults aged 45-49; stratified analyses were conducted among the insured and uninsured. Among screened individuals, associations with undergoing endoscopy versus another screening modal…

Rural-urban differences in HPV testing for cervical cancer screening.

PURPOSE: Rural preventable cancer disparities are often attributed in part to lower screening rates secondary to compromised health care access. When considering higher cervical cancer incidence and mortality, existing analyses primarily consider differences in Pap testing rather than the preferred method of HPV testing, which is more sensitive in identifying severe cases of cervical dysplasia. METHODS: Logistic regression using data from the 2016 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was used to examine urban and rural rates of cervical cancer screening according to national gu…

Alcohol consumption and rates of cancer screening: Is cancer risk overestimated?

PURPOSE: Alcohol consumption in moderation has been associated with incident breast and colorectal cancer. Whether these associations may be overestimated by more intensive screening among moderate consumers is unknown. This study examines the associations of alcohol consumption with cancer screening. METHODS: In six iterations (2002-2012) of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a telephone survey of US adults conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, participants reported their alcohol use and recent screening for several cancers. We assessed whether alcohol use…
