Organophosphorus pesticides are known to potentially disrupt soil phosphorus (P) cycling. Microplastics often co-occur with organophosphorus pesticides in agricultural soils, with largely unknown combined effects. This work examined chlorpyrifos (CPF, 6 and 12 mg kg-1) fate in soils with and without co-occurring biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics (PLA-MPs, 1%), and their combined impacts on plant growth, P distribution, P fractions and P-related enzyme activities in maize-cultivated soils. Results showed that CPF alone enhanced the transformation of NaHCO3-Po (-54%) to NaHCO3-Pi (53%)

Leaves and petioles of Victoria amazonica were analyzed for phenolics, sugars, bioactivity, and gastrointestinal behavior. Both showed high levels of phenolics and flavonoids, mainly ellagic (2166.97 μg/g) and syringic (1297.91 μg/g) acids in the leaves, and ellagic (574.37 μg/g) and gallic acids (232.72 μg/g) in the petiole, while glucose and fructose dominated the sugar profile. No significant antimicrobial activity was detected against E. coli and S. aureus. In vitro digestion revealed an overall decrease in phenolics content, but higher release of gallic and protocatechuic acids in the gas

Background/Objectives: Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as ubiquitous environmental contaminants resulting from the extensive production, use, and degradation of plastic materials. Human exposure occurs primarily through contaminated food and drinking water, with inhalation representing an additional important route. Growing concern has focused on the ability of these particles, particularly NPs, to cross biological barriers, enter the systemic circulation, and reach human tissues. The aim of this review was to summarize current evidence on dietary exposure to MPs and NP

Rutin is a flavonoid glycoside with well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in preclinical models, but its oral bioavailability is poor due to extensive presystemic metabolism. Following oral administration, intact rutin reaches the colon largely unabsorbed, where gut microbiota convert it to quercetin aglycone, which is further metabolized to circulating conjugated metabolites and local phenolic acid derivatives. Accumulating evidence, derived predominantly from preclinical studies, suggests this metabolic activation can be usefully conceptualized as a microbiota-activate

Oral delivery of bioactive proteins remains a challenging area, as it demands effective gastric protection and intestinal site-specific release. We design two intestinal site-specific microgels via Fe3 +-COO- coordination or STMP-conjugated cross-linking of eco-friendly and biocompatible Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch. polysaccharides (ASKP) extracted from desert sand-fixing plant; these microgels release lactoferrin (Lf) precisely in the small intestine or colon on-demand. Both microgels protect Lf from gastric digestion, preserve the Lf receptor (LfR)-binding domain, and facilitate efficien

Isoflavones are key bioactive constituents of soybean (Glycine max L.) that contribute substantially to the nutritional and functional value of soy-based food. However, their physiological efficacy depends strongly on the chemical form, as aglycone isoflavones exhibit greater bioavailability and biological activity than glucoside, acetylglucoside and malonylglucoside conjugates. Recent advances have demonstrated that seed germination and controlled ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation can synergistically enhance isoflavone biosynthesis while promoting compositional shifts from poorly absorbed conj

Nanoemulsions (NEs) are submicron-sized colloidal dispersions (20-500 nm) consisting of oil and aqueous phases stabilized by surfactants and cosurfactants. Despite their thermodynamic instability, NEs maintain kinetic stability, preventing separation and aggregation. This stability distinguishes them from microemulsions, which are thermodynamically stable and formed spontaneously. The emulsification process involves a reduction in Gibbs surface free energy facilitated by emulsifiers that lower interfacial tension, crucial for compensating for the high surface area associated with small droplet

Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid that is naturally derived from Berberis species, owing to its broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, has been of significant interest due to its high potency for the treatment of metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, and inflammatory diseases by modulation of cellular signaling pathways, antimicrobial action, and cytoprotection. Its therapeutic use, however, is still marred by poor oral bioavailability. This review aims to assess the therapeutic potential of berberine, highlight its pharmacological and structural characteristics, and discuss formul

BACKGROUND: Camellia oleifera shells (COS) are a by-product of camellia oil processing and are rich in polyphenols. To date, the polyphenols extracted from COS have not been fully developed. In this study, two polyphenol fractions, referred to as 20P and 40P, were obtained by sequentially eluting the COS crude extract from an AB-8 macroporous resin column using ethanol at concentrations of 20% and 40% with different polarities. In addition, the biotransformation processes of these two polyphenols and their effects on the gut microbiota were studied.
RESULTS: The results of in vitro digestion

Designing stable and functional emulsions using natural emulsifiers remains a key challenge in the food industry, particularly due to the limited interfacial activity and weak compatibility of protein-polysaccharide systems under conventional processing methods. In this study, we prepared bovine bone protein hydrolysate-flaxseed gum (BBPH-FG) composite emulsions using ultrasound-assisted technology to address these challenges and to improve emulsion stability, interfacial behavior, and curcumin delivery performance. Ultrasonic power (0-1000 W) had a significant effect on emulsion properties, w

This study investigates the influence of phytic acid on Fe and Zn bioaccessibility and impact of phenolics on free radical scavenging activity in 13 diverse pearl millet (PM) genotypes. Forty-three phenolic compounds were identified using UPLC-(ESI)-QToF-MS. Free (173.01-217.11 mg GAE/100 g), bound (102.97-142.52 mg GAE/100 g), and total phenolic content (286.04-337.63 mg GAE/100 g) varied significantly among genotypes. Phenolic content positively correlated with radical scavenging activity (36.43%-47.56%, DPPH assay). INFOGEST in vitro digestion showed increasing phenolic bioaccessibility fro

Water-soluble and extractable cadmium (Cd) govern Cd bioavailability. However, cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdSnp) bioavailability remains unclear. Pot experiments investigated how organic materials (1 % wheat straw and pine needles) and sulfate (30 mg S/kg) affect Cd bioavailability and accumulation in rice in CdCl₂- and CdSnp-treated soils. Sulfate addition alone immobilized Cd through sulfate-reducing bacteria-mediated Cd-precipitation in CdCl₂-treated soil, thereby reducing Cd accumulation in brown rice. However, it promoted CdSnp dissolution and Cd transfer, increasing Cd accumulation i

Lipid-based formulations can enhance the oral absorption of poorly water-soluble drugs. Their performance is typically evaluated by in vitro lipolysis. For this, samples are usually prepared by centrifugation, and formulation performance is evaluated based on the concentration in the aqueous phase. However, several studies have questioned the predictiveness of the in vitro lipolysis method. A reason for the in vitro-in vivo mismatch may be that centrifugation cannot separate truly dissolved drug molecules from molecules associated with colloidal assemblies such as mixed micelles. The present s

To meet the high consumer demand, butter production has increased over the last few years. As a result, the buttermilk (BM) co-produced volumes require new ways of adding value, such as in cheese manufacturing. However, BM use in cheese milk negatively influences the cheesemaking process (e.g., altered coagulation properties) and the product's final quality (e.g., high moisture content). The concentration of BM by ultrafiltration (UF) could potentially facilitate its use in cheese manufacturing through an increased protein content while maintaining the milk salt balance. Simultaneously, little

The low bioavailability of polyphenolic compounds due to poor solubility and stability is a major challenge. Encapsulation of polyphenols in zein-based composite nanoparticles can improve the water dispersion, stability, targeted delivery, and controlled release of polyphenols in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, we investigated the fluorescence properties, bioactivity, and microstructural characteristics of polyphenols during digestion, revealing that zein nanoparticles protect polyphenols from gastric degradation and promote their sustained release in the small intestine. The effect

Nanofertilizers comprising engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) have great potential in sustainable agriculture due to their strong capabilities of improving crop yields. As an effective fertilization strategy, foliar spraying could lead to broken and splashed ENP droplets, resulting in inaccurate leaf targeting and potential environmental contamination. Herein, we propose embedding Fe-based ENPs into a supramolecular hydrogel to effectively enhance the deposition amount on leaves and thus the bioavailability. The proper rheological properties of the hydrogel droplets and their robust interaction w

Stable iron isotope techniques are critical for developing strategies to combat iron deficiency anemia, a leading cause of global disability. There are four primary stable iron isotope methods to assess ferrokinetics in humans. (i) The fecal recovery method applies the principles of a metabolic balance study but offers enhanced accuracy because the amount of iron isotope present in feces can be directly traced back to the labeled dose, distinguishing it from endogenous iron lost in stool from shed intestinal cells. (ii) In the plasma isotope appearance method, plasma samples are collected for

The objectives of this study were to elucidate the effects of degree of methyl esterification (DM) and charge distribution of pectin on the stability of emulsions and to analyze bioaccessibility of curcumin incorporated in emulsions stabilized by pectins. Three commercial pectins, CP72 (DM72), CP50 (DM50), and CP7 (DM7), were used. MP50 (DM50) with consecutive demethylesterified galacturonic acid residues was prepared from CP72 via demethylesterification to induce different charge distributions. Emulsions containing curcumin were prepared and were stored for 30 days. The CP72 and CP50 emulsion
