Medication error in an extremely low birth weight infant: paracetamol overdose.

Errors are part of human nature and are usually present in our actions. Medical errors occur quite often and can be serious. Medication erro … nfant and to analyze its causes. A preterm female infant born at 27 weeks of gestational age with a birth weight of 750 g received paracetamol at 9 days old at a dose 20 times greater than required. The initial plasma level was 480 µg/mL. N-acetylcysteine was administered and her clinical outcome was satisfactory. Parents were notified of the event, which was …

Quality of life of adolescents born with extremely low birth weight.

AIM: To explore extremely low birth weight [ELBW] adolescents' self-reported quality of life [QoL] and compare it with control group of same age full-term peers. METHODS: This project is nested within a national follow-up study on the long-term outcome of ELBW infants born in Iceland in 1991-1995. Twenty-nine ELBW adolescents and 30 controls evaluated their QoL using KIDSCREEN-52. To evaluate group differences, Chi-square tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests were conducted. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the influence of birth weight on QoL in ten dimensions. RESULTS: No di…

Trajectory and correlates of growth of extremely-low-birth-weight adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Catch-up growth may predispose to obesity and metabolic sequelae. We sought to examine the trajectory and correlates of growth and catch up among extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) (<1 kg) adolescents. METHODS: A cohort study of 148 neurologically normal ELBW children and 115 normal-birth-weight (NBW) controls born during the period 1992-1995 was conducted. Longitudinal measures of gender-specific growth of ELBW children from birth, in addition to growth and measures of obesity of ELBW and NBW children at 14 y, were evaluated. RESULTS: Following neonatal growth failure, ELBW child

[Advances in medical care for extremely low birth weight infants worldwide].

Dramatic advances in neonatal medicine over recent decades have resulted in decreased mortality and morbidity rates for extremely low birth weight infants. However, the survival of these infants is associated with short- and long-term morbidity, including severe intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, nosocomial infection and necrotizing enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity and adverse long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae. This article reviewed the latest advances in the medical care for extremely low birth weight infants including survival …

Fecal S100A12: identifying intestinal distress in very-low-birth-weight infants.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine whether longitudinal measurements of fecal S100A12, a damage-associated molecular pattern protein, which is released from neutrophils or monocytes under stress, can detect very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants at risk for intestinal distress apart from necrotizing enterocolitis. METHODS: This prospective study included 46 VLBW infants with intestinal distress and 49 reference patients. Meconium and stool samples were collected prospectively on alternate days for 4 weeks, and fecal S100A12 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESU

Cortical thickness and cognition in very-low-birth-weight late teenagers.

BACKGROUND: Preterm born children with very low birth weight (VLBW: bw ≤ 1500 g) have an increased risk of perinatal brain injury which may influence the subsequent maturation of grey and white matter. Aberrant cortical development may have implications for future cognitive functioning. AIMS: The aim of this study was to measure deviations in cortical thickness and to investigate the relationship between cortical thickness, perinatal variables and IQ measurements in VLBW late teenagers compared with term-born controls. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective follow-up study of three year cohorts of childr…

Fluid restriction and prophylactic indomethacin in extremely low birth weight infants.

Although survival of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants dramatically improved over last decades, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) rate has not changed. The use of indomethacin prophylaxis in ELBW infants results in improved short-term outcomes with no effect on long-term outcomes. The addition of fluid restriction to the indomethacin prophylaxis policy could result in a reduction of BPD and improve long-term survival without neurosensory impairment at 18 months corrected age. To determine the effect of a policy of fluid restriction compared with a policy of no fluid restriction on morbi…
