Exploring practices to enhance benefits and reduce risks of chemsex among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men: A meta-ethnography.

BACKGROUND: Chemsex is the intentional combining of specific drugs with sex, primarily by gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), to enhance intimacy, pleasure, and prolong sexual sessions. Practices vary across geographic and social settings. Participants report benefits and risks of chemsex. Studies have previously reviewed chemsex practices and harm reduction interventions separately. This review aims to examine both together by describing and understanding practices that men employ to navigate the perceived benefits and risks of chemsex. METHODS: We conducted a systema

Prevalence of Oral Human Papillomavirus Infection Among Urban Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Canada, 2017-2019.

BACKGROUND: Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers. In 2015 and 2016, HPV vaccines became publicly funded for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) under 27 years of age in most Canadian provinces. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2019, sexually active GBM in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver were recruited through respondent-driven sampling. Participants aged 16-30 years were invited to self-collect oral rinse specimens for HPV testing. We estimated HPV prevalence in the oral tract overall and compared these by vaccination status.

An Evaluation of Syphilis Partner Services Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men With Early Syphilis in King County, WA.

BACKGROUND: Partner services (PS) have been integral to syphilis control in the United States since the early 20th century but have not been evaluated in a controlled study. METHODS: We compared PS outcomes among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) diagnosed with syphilis from May 2020 to June 2021 for whom health department staff initiated PS efforts (PS group) and a randomly selected control group for whom no PS efforts were initiated. We interviewed participants about partner outcomes and used χ2 tests and Poisson regression to test for differences in outcomes betwee

Screening for HPV-Related Oropharyngeal Cancer in Gay and Bisexual Men: Acceptability and Predicting Possible Use of "Oral Selfies" by Smartphone as a Secondary Prevention Approach.

Oropharyngeal cancers (OPCa) caused by HPV have emerged as one of the leading causes of malignancies caused by HPV infection. They are also significantly more likely to occur in males and in people with a history of oral sex with multiple partners. Gay and bisexual men are disproportionately affected by HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers. We studied 1699 gay and bisexual men on 2 major dating sites in the US to assess their knowledge about HPV-related OPCa, attitudes toward screening for it, beliefs about oropharyngeal cancer screening based on the Health Belief Model, and attitudes toward pos

Increase in Depression and Anxiety Among Australian Gay and Bisexual Men During COVID-19 Restrictions: Findings from a Prospective Online Cohort Study.

We examined depression and anxiety prior to and during COVID-19 restrictions in Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM). In an online cohort, a COVID-19-focused survey was conducted in April 2020. During 2019 and in April 2020, 664 GBM completed the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, measuring depression) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7, measuring anxiety). Increased depression and anxiety were defined as a ≥ 5 point increase on the respective scales. Mean PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores increased between 2019 and 2020 (PHQ-9: from 5.11 in 2019 to 6.55 in 2020; GAD-7: from 3.80 in 20

Staff perspectives on barriers and enablers to implementing alternative source plasma eligibility criteria for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Canadian Blood Services introduced new eligibility criteria that allows some sexually active gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) to donate source plasma, marking a significant change from time-based deferral criteria. We aimed to identify potential barriers and enablers to implementing the new criteria from the perspective of donor center staff. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted Theoretical Domains Framework-informed interviews with staff from two source plasma donation centers in Canada. RESULTS: We completed 28 interviews between June 2020 and April

COVID-19 and the Risk for Increased Intimate Partner Violence Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States.

Stay at home orders-intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19 by limiting social contact-have forced people to remain in their homes. The additional stressors created by the need to stay home and socially isolate may act as triggers to intimate partner violence (IPV). In this article, we present data from a recent online cross-sectional survey with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the United States to illustrate changes in IPV risks that have occurred during the U.S. COVID-19 epidemic. The Love and Sex in the Time of COVID-19 survey was conducted online from April t

Non-prescription drug use among HIV positive gay and bisexual men in Australia: A latent class analysis and comparison of health and well-being.

BACKGROUND: Establishing typologies of drug use among gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who are living with HIV, as well as differences in health outcomes between them, is important in addressing health inequalities within this population. We sought to determine how use of non-prescription drugs is clustered for these individuals and to establish differences in their broader health and well-being, including STI diagnosis, mental health, and physical health. METHOD: We examined past-year drug use reported by 747 GBMSM in Australia as part of the HIV Futures 8 survey, a large c

Factors Associated With Online Sex Partners Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men: Results From a National Survey.

BACKGROUND: Associations between online sex seeking and increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men (MSM) typically rely on convenience samples. We examined Internet and mobile app use for finding sex partners among a nationally representative sample of MSM. METHODS: We analyzed 2011 to 2017 data from the National Survey of Family Growth, a nationally representative sample of the civilian, non-institutionalized US population (15-44 years). The analytic sample was comprised of men who reported 1 or more same-s

PrEP your team! Clinician initiation of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis discussion at sexually transmissible infection testing and diagnosis in gay and bisexual men.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended for gay and bisexual men (GBM) with recent diagnosis of rectal chlamydia (CT), rectal gonorrhoea (NG) or infectious syphilis. A retrospective medical record audit was undertaken at Canberra Sexual Health Centre (CSHC) of all GBM who met this criterion in 2019 and were thus determined to be at higher risk of acquisition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Pre-exposure prophylaxis was discussed and/or commenced in 85% of GBM at higher risk of HIV. Audit results and education were provided to the team with a post-interventional audit in 2020 s

Perspectives from Young Partnered Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men on the Adaptation of Couples HIV Testing and Counseling (CHTC).

Young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YGBMSM) are a priority population for HIV prevention efforts. Although there has been a growing focus on dyadic HIV prevention interventions for same-gender male couples, the unique needs of partnered YGBMSM have been largely overlooked. In this qualitative study, we explored partnered YGBMSM's perceptions of existing HIV prevention interventions to inform the design of a relationship-focused HIV prevention intervention. Between July and November 2018, we conducted in-depth interviews with 30 young partnered YGBMSM (mean age = 17.8, SD

Post-exposure prophylaxis: an underutilized biomedical HIV prevention method among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in China.

Despite abundant evidence on its safety, tolerability and cost-effectiveness, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has not been officially approved for non-occupational use in China. This study aims to assess awareness of, willingness to use, and actual experience with PEP in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in China and to explore potential associations between demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors and PEP-related outcomes. We recruited a convenience sample through community venue-based strategies, peer referrals, and online advertisement in four cities of China

HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Cascades to Assess Implementation in Australia: Results From Repeated, National Behavioral Surveillance of Gay and Bisexual Men, 2014-2018.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention cascades can assist in monitoring the implementation of prevention methods like preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We developed 2 PrEP cascades for Australia's primary HIV-affected population, gay and bisexual men. METHODS: Data were drawn from 2 national, repeated, cross-sectional surveys (the Gay Community Periodic Surveys and PrEPARE Project). One cascade had 3 steps, and the other had 7 steps. Trends over time were assessed using logistic regression. For the most recent year, we identified the biggest drop between steps in each cascade and compared the characterist

Injecting drug use among gay and bisexual men in New Zealand: Findings from national human immunodeficiency virus epidemiological and behavioural surveillance.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) who inject drugs are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) because of dual transmission risks. New Zealand has a progressive history of harm reduction and was the first country to publicly fund needle exchange programs in 1988 for people who inject drugs (PWID). We combine national HIV epidemiological and bio-behavioural surveillance data to understand HIV risk among this subpopulation. DESIGN AND METHODS: We examine trends in new HIV diagnoses 1996-2018 by mode of transmission, and compare HIV cases attributed to s

Identifying Health Differences Between Transgender and Cisgender Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Using a Community-Based Approach.

In this article, we describe a community-based research (CBR) approach to making a national online survey of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) inclusive of transgender GBMSM by working with members of the transgender community at all stages of the research process. This collaboration resulted in 209 transgender GBMSM completing our survey and we contrasted their health experiences with 7439 cisgender GBMSM. We found that transgender GBMSM were less likely than cisgender GBMSM to report intercourse without a condom (AOR 0.43; 95% CI: 0.28-0.66) and to have had an HIV te

Bisexual individuals are at greater risk of poor mental health than lesbians and gay men: The mediating role of sexual identity stress at multiple levels.

BACKGROUND: Although earlier studies have indicated that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are at greater risk of psychiatric symptoms than heterosexual individuals, limited attention has been paid to the mental health disparities within LGB populations, especially in non-Western societies. This study examined the disparities in depression, anxiety, and mental well-being between gay/lesbian and bisexual individuals and investigated how the disparities are explained by the greater sexual identity stress experienced by bisexual individuals compared to their gay and lesbian counterpart
