Congenital onychodysplasia of the index finger (COIF) is a rare condition characterized by dysplastic changes in the nail with variable phenotypic manifestations. Its prevalence is unknown. We describe three newborn patients with various clinical and radiologic expressions of this entity. The first, born to a mother treated with multiple antidepressant drugs, had bilateral nail dysplasia of the index finger without bony involvement. The second presented with bilateral hypoplastic nail of the index finger and bilateral symphalangism of the fifth finger; aplastic distal phalanges of the second f

The True-Flex nail was used in 23 selected non-pathological and eight pathological fractures/lesions of the humeral shaft. The overall fracture union rate was 69.5 per cent and the patients achieved a good range of movement of the shoulder and elbow. Nailing did not lead to union of established non-unions or fractures which were previously treated unsuccessfully by surgery despite bone grafting. All patients with pathological fractures/lesions regained good function of the arm and a good range of movement of the shoulder and the elbow. In one case the nail migrated proximally and impinged on t

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a serious condition resulting in inadequate acetabular development, distorted bone configuration, and substantially altered hip biomechanics. An extensive leg length discrepancy (LLD) is commonly encountered in such cases, making a total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedure extremely challenging. Although good results in terms of patients' satisfaction, implant survival rates and overall improved quality of life have been reported, complication rates are considerably higher than primary THA procedures performed for idiopathic osteoarthritis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical strength of the cephalomedullary nail InterTAN in cases of intertrochanteric fractures with the commonly used PFNA.
METHODS: Sixteen fresh specimens of the proximal femur were used as intertrochanteric fracture models and were fixed using two fixation devices: the new proximal femoral nail (InterTAN) and proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA). An intertrochanteric fracture was created in composite bone models. Each specimen was loaded to simulate single leg stance while stiffness, migration (cut out), compressive force acr

BACKGROUND: Fat embolism syndrome is a potentially fatal complication of long bone fractures. It is usually seen in the context of polytrauma or a femoral fracture. There are few reports of fat embolism syndrome occurring after isolated long bone fractures other than those of the femur.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of fat embolism syndrome in a 33-year-old Caucasian man. He was being seen for an isolated Gustilo's grade II open tibial fracture. He was deemed clinically stable, so we proceeded to treat the fracture with intramedullary reamed nailing. He developed fat embolism syndrome

Advances in anatomical, biomechanical and biological knowledge as well as technical advances in fixation devices and ancillary equipment have enabled precise treatments in trauma management. Locked intramedullary nails, minimally invasive pelvic techniques, and the induced membrane technique are examples of these French major innovations that have transformed that exemplify these advances. The locked intramedullary nail has revolutionized the management of long bone fractures by combining mechanical stability, while respecting bone biology, and thus allowing early mobilization. Modern nailing

BACKGROUND: Potential complications after elastically stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) of pediatric forearm fractures include nonunion and malunion. Malunion, especially affecting the radial bow, has been linked to poor postoperative forearm rotation. Pre-bending of nails has been cited as a key step to achieve optimal construct biomechanics and maintain reduction. We hypothesise that unlike in larger medullary diameter bones such as the femur, pre-bending of nails for the treatment of paediatric forearm fractures has no effect on postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: Forearm fractures treated

INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary (IM) nailing of humeral shaft fractures is a reliable means to achieve bone union while allowing early motion. The hypothesis was that distal locking is unnecessary due to good primary stability of the impacted nail in the distal, truncated cone portion of the medullary canal. The primary objective of this study was to confirm the success of the procedure without distal locking by identifying failure criteria. The secondary objectives were to compare the outcomes of IM nailing with and without distal locking.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the outcomes of augmentative plating, with or without exchange nailing, in treating AFF nonunion.
METHODS: Ten female patients who underwent augmentative plating with or without exchange nailing for AFF nonunion were retrospectively analyzed. To measure bone remodeling suppression, preoperative bone turnover markers (BTMs) were evaluated. The key outcome measures were the effectiveness of screw fixation in plating, malalignment correction via neck-shaft angle (NSA) adjustments, and improvements in ambulatory function assessed by the Koval score.
RESULTS:

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a genetic disorder that is often associated with anomalies of teeth such as hypodontia and oligodontia. Individuals affected by ED have abnormalities of the epithelial tissue of the hair, nails, teeth, or sweat glands. Implant-prosthetic rehabilitation is often necessary because the severity of disease may limit other treatment options. This is a report of a 30-year-old man affected by ED who exhibited severe hypodontia and atrophy of the jaws. Radiographic and clinical evaluations showed inadequate quantity of bone for immediate implant rehabilitation. Osteogeneti

The nail plate is a layer of keratin that protects the back of the ends of the fingers and toes. It is a system with many important functions, since it stabilises the distal portion of the finger and toe and provides resistance to the fleshy part, thus contributing to the handling of small objects and fine sense of touch. Nail injuries are a reason for visits to Emergency Departments and Primary Care, representing up to 8% of hand emergencies. The inappropriate treatment of these injuries can lead to important aesthetic and functional sequelae. These can be very complex even to correct later (

A slowly growing malignant tumor of the nail unit in a 74-year-old female is reported. At light microscopy, the tumor was composed of small keratinous cysts with abrupt central keratinization, and of solid nests and strands of atypical keratinocytes filling the dermis and penetrating the phalangeal bone. In our view, this can be regarded as the malignant analog of the keratin cysts arising from the nail bed epithelium, as first reported by Samman in 1959. Since, according to several authors, the nail bed epithelium is comparable to the outer root sheath of the follicle and since the reported t

BACKGROUND: Cut-out of gamma nail often results from poor primary bone stability, suboptimal reduction (varus) and excentric placement of the head element which may lead to "instability" and frequently requires revision. Various studies have shown that augmentation with polymethylmethacrylate cement increases the primary stability of osteosynthesis. However, it has not yet been widely used in fracture treatment due to certain disadvantages, e.g., the lack of osteointegration, the formation of an interface membrane or the presence of toxic monomers. Few studies show that biodegradable bone ceme

Bone fractures require the proper integration of fixation devices to ensure long-term biomechanical performance and accelerated recovery, while allowing for early load-bearing and equitable load-sharing. The primary objective of this research is to elucidate the effect of four different generations of fixation devices on synthetic tibiae with induced comminuted fractures. The fixation devices considered herein comprised an intramedullary nail, as well as various distal interlocking screws and plates. The overall biomechanical response was studied under quasi-static compressive loading, followi

Intramedullary nailing has been the gold standard in the management of lower limb fractures by virtue of advantage of early joint mobilisation and weight bearing. They are being increasingly used in the peri-trochanteric fractures of femur. Biomechanical studies have proved the supremacy of single femoral neck screw construct over two femoral neck screws along with the intramedullary nails in osteoporotic bones due to lower incidence of complications. This randomised clinical trial was conducted to study the clinico-radiological outcome of single and two-femoral neck screw construct in the man
