Case report on successful treatment for brain abscess in a Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: A brain abscess in human beings is a focal infection of the central nervous system frequently characterized by areas of localized cerebritis and central necrosis surrounded by a well vascularized capsule. A brain abscess, although sporadically reported, is relatively rare disease in domestic animals (horses, cattle, goats and alpacas), companion animals (dogs and cats) and laboratory nonhuman primates. Brain abscesses are life threatening disease that needs early and aggressive veterinary therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: The purpose of this study on a brain abscess in a Japanese monkey…

Risk factors for unfavorable clinical outcomes in patients with brain abscess in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscess can be life-threatening and manifest various neurological findings, although the mortality rate has decreased recently. We investigated the risk factors for unfavorable outcomes of patients with brain abscess. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study examined patients with brain abscess seen from May 2005 to December 2018 in a tertiary care hospital in Seoul, South Korea. We reviewed the medical records for clinical findings, therapeutic modalities, and prognostic factors of brain abscess. Unfavorable clinical outcomes were defined as death, moderate to severe disabilit…

Candida brain abscesses in a patient with anorexia nervosa receiving total parenteral nutrition.

A 28-year-old woman with anorexia nervosa (AN) and Candida brain abscesses was transferred to our hospital for intensive treatment. On admission, she had a low-grade fever but no clinical neurological abnormalities were observed, even though she had a high-grade fever in the previous hospital. These clinical findings did not suggest a serious disorder in the brain. However, magnetic resonance imaging showed mass lesions in bilateral lentiform nuclei in addition to several abscesses in the whole body. The fungal cultures of specimens from abscesses on the anterior chest wall and iliopsoas muscl…

Multiple Brain Abscesses Due to Nocardia otitidiscaviarum: Case Report and Treatment Implications.

Nocardia infections typically present in immunocompromised hosts. Brain abscesses caused by species such as Nocardia  asteroides, farcinica, and abscessus are well-documented in the literature. We present a rare case of an immunocompetent patient with multiple brain abscesses due to Nocardia otitidiscaviarum requiring a decompressive fronto-temporoparietal craniectomy due to symptomatic intracranial hypertension. The patient was treated with intrathecal amikacin in addition to standard antibiotics with the resolution of the disease and good neurologic outcome. This is one of few case reports o…

Multiple Tubercular Brain Abscesses with Obstructive Hydrocephalus in an Immunocompetent Child: A Case Report.

Tubercular brain abscesses are rare manifestations in children, and very few cases have been reported till date. It is characterized by an encapsulated collection of pus, containing viable tubercular bacilli. Antitubercular treatment (ATT) is the mainstay of treatment along with surgical drainage or aspiration or excision of the abscess. We hereby report a case of a 15-month-old child with multiple tubercular brain abscesses with obstructive hydrocephalus, managed with ATT and ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

A Clinical Report of Two Cases of Cryptogenic Brain Abscess and a Relevant Literature Review.

Brain abscess, a severe intracranial infectious disease, refers to the parenchyma abscess caused by local infection or remote spread. Recently, advancements in modern medicine, especially the wide application of antimicrobial drugs, have contributed to the gradual decrease in the prevalence of this disease. However, cases of cryptogenic brain abscess that feature an unknown origin and atypical symptoms are rising. In this retrospective study, we report and analyze two cases of cryptogenic brain abscess. The first patient was a 30-year-old healthy man who was admitted to our hospital due to 1 w…

Tuberculous brain abscesses in immunocompetent patients: A decade long experience with nine patients.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, radiological findings, management details, and outcome in nine cases of tuberculous brain abscess (TBA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients (5 females, 4 males) harboring a TBA, as defined by the Whitener's criteria, were managed over a span of one and a half decade by the authors. All, except one patient, underwent contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scans, followed by surgical excision of the abscesses due to the failure of complete resolution of the lesion after its drainage using a burr-hole. RESULTS: The infra-tentorial locati…

Successful treatment of multifoci nocardial brain abscesses: a case report and literature review.

Brain nocardiosis is a serious opportunistic infection with high mortality. It exists more common in the immunocompromised hosts than the immunocompetent patients. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) has been mostly considered as the choice of the medical treatment. Linezolid is also newly found to be effective to avoid the invasive surgery. The authors reported a case of patient with multifoci nocardial brain abscesses who failed with the combination of linezolid and TMP-SMZ alone but recovered with the surgery intervention and sequential antibiotics for 2 years. The patient lived a high …

Brain abscess as a complication of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension - a rare case report.

A brain abscess is a life threatening condition which can occur as a complication of various clinical conditions. An intra-cerebral abscess which occurs as a complication of pulmonary arterial hypertension is extremely rare. The present report has described such an uncommon case of an intra-cerebral abscess in a chronic pulmonary thrombo embolism patient with pulmonary hypertension. A-34-year old male who was a known case of chronic pulmonary thrombo embolism with pulmonary artery hypertension, who was diagnosed 6 months back, presented to the Out Patients Department (OPD) with headache and vo…

[Meningitis and brain abscess caused by Streptococcus intermedius in a patient infected with HIV-1].

Streptococcus milleri group have been recognized as an important pathogens for abscess formation in various organs. Streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae are a rare cause of bacterial meningitis in adults and can be associated with the presence of an undiagnosed brain abscess. Brain abscess is a focal collection within the brain parenchyma which can arise as a complication of a variety of infections. The most common etiologic organisms in clinical series have been microaerophilic streptococci and anaerobic bacteria. Although intracranial mass lesions that occur as a result of infect…

Brain abscess caused by Nocardia cyriacigeorgica in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Nocardia cyriacigeorgica is a recently characterized species within the genus of Nocardia. We report a brain abscess, following a primary pulmonary colonization, due to this species in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient. This case confirms that isolation of Nocardia in sputum is associated with a high risk of disseminated infection in immunocompromised patients.

[A case of a bacterial brain abscess presenting as symptoms of 'sudden stroke-like' onset].

We report a case of a bacterial brain abscess presenting symptoms of 'sudden stroke-like' onset, associated with infective endocarditis. A 59-year-old woman experienced a sudden stroke-like onset of left hemiplegia. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed on the day of ictus. No lesion responsible for the symptom was seen on either CT or a T2 weighted image (T2WI), but a diffusion-weighted image (DWI) revealed focal increased signal intensity in the right frontal lobe. An initial diagnosis of acute embolic infarction associated with infective endocarditis w…

Discrimination of brain abscess and cystic tumor by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy was evaluated for the differentiation of brain abscesses and cystic brain tumors. Proton MR spectroscopy was performed in vivo in two patients with brain abscess and eight patients with various cystic brain tumors (anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma, and metastatic brain tumor). MR imaging with contrast medium demonstrated ring-like enhanced mass lesions in all patients. The various resonance peaks in proton MR spectra were assigned to metabolites according to chemical shifts. Treatment of the cystic brain lesions was based on the information from …
