A 43-year-old man presented with dizziness, head instability, and facial reddening, always in relation to body posture and without fever or systemic manifestations. Chest radiography revealed a large cavity with an air-fluid level in the right upper hemithorax. A right upper lobectomy was performed to remove a large bronchogenic cyst. The presentation with cardiac but no respiratory symptoms is uncommon but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with intrathoracic cysts.

Video thoracoscopy has evolved rapidly over the last 2 years. Improvements in technique and instrumentation allow for the diagnosis and treatment of diverse posterior mediastinal masses including neurogenic tumors, esophageal leiomyomata, paravertebral abscesses, and bronchogenic cysts.

Congenital lung cysts such as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, pulmonary sequestration, congenital lobar emphysema, and bronchogenic cysts are rare but fascinating anomalies of lung development. While there are many similarities in terms of their presenting features, there are particular differences between the diagnostic groups that are important to highlight, especially in relationship to approaches to imaging and long-term outcome. A case of each entity is presented with an emphasis on the contemporary approach to diagnostic investigations and therapeutic options.

Posterior mediastinal Mullerian cyst is rare. Due to its special location, it is easy to be misdiagnosed clinically, imaging and pathologically. Imaging is often misdiagnosed as a bronchial cyst or neurogenic tumor. The postoperative misdiagnosis rate is high and it is easy to be misdiagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst. Careful histopathological observation and necessary immunohistochemical marker staining of the resected specimens, such as PAX 8, WT1, ER and PR positivity, can confirm the diagnosis and avoid misdiagnosis of other lesions. This article introduces the clinical, imaging characterist…

Mediastinal cysts are typically of bronchogenic, thymic or neurenteric origin, but may also represent oesophageal duplication. Posterior paravertebral mediastinal Müllerian cysts of undetermined pathogenesis are very rare occurrences. The first case of a ciliated cyst arising in the mediastinum, of probable Müllerian origin, was reported by Hattori in 2005, which gave rise to the name cyst of Hatorri (COH) The number of reported cases in literature of a similar nature have since then increased significantly. One of the main concerns about this pathology is the possibility of malignant transfor

Cysts are entities encountered frequently in dermatological clinics. Various types of cysts have been described and include trichilemmal cysts, epidermoid cysts, steatocystomas, and the myriad of developmental cysts (branchial cleft cyst, thyroglossal duct cysts, bronchogenic cysts). Moreover, not all lesions that appear clinically as cystic structures are, in fact, cysts. Increased awareness of these mimickers and a systematic approach to the evaluation of these cases is essential. The authors report seven cases, over the course of six years, presenting to their dermatology department, all of…

Cysts within the lung are one of the more common pulmonary pathological findings seen in an active pediatric surgical pathology service. Of both developmental and acquired origin, they may present as respiratory distress in infants or may be asymptomatic lesions incidentally discovered by images studies of the thoracic for "non-pulmonary" reasons. The most frequently seen developmental cysts of the lung are those of Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformations, types 1, 2 & 4. Other congenital cystic lesions include bronchogenic cysts (usually in older patients) and some of the enteric duplicatio…

Eight patients with congenital esophageal cysts are described. They presented with respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms or an abnormal mediastinal profile on a standard chest film. All cysts were contained in the middle or inferior portions of the thoracic esophagus. They were excised in a submucosal plane. Their coat was composed of a ciliated, respiratory type epithelium. In the embryo and after separation of the tracheal diverticulum, the esophagus is lined with ciliated cells which are able cover a "cystic duplication", which is surrounded by an esophageal muscular coat or can be "incl

Pericardial cysts are infrequent mediastinal entities. They can mimic cardiac chamber enlargement, phrenic hernia, malignancy, bronchogenic cysts, pleurisy, dextrocardia. Diaphragmatic elevation can also be misdiagnosed in some cases. The reports about huge pericardial cyst mimicking the left diaphragmatic elevation (paralysis) are not common. The correct diagnosis of pericardial cyst can be difficult due to unremarkable complains and non-specific findings on chest radiography. In this report we have presented a rare clinical case described as the huge pericardial cyst mimicking a false left d…

Combined occurrence of both congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) and esophageal cyst is rare and its diagnosis requires a carefully pathologic examination. Differential diagnoses include malignant neoplasms of pulmonary origin, pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor, bronchogenic cysts and other congenital lesions of esophagus and lung. This paper presented a rare case report of a 31-year-old adult male with combined type III CPAM and an esophageal cyst. The patient was misdiagnosed and treated for pneumonia and tuberculosis before being admitted to our hospital. To eliminate symptoms a…

Paratracheal air cyst encompasses conditions including tracheoceles, bronchogenic cysts, lymphoepithelial cysts, and tracheal diverticula. The occurrence of tracheal diverticulum is rare and usually does not manifest clinically or may cause symptoms like chronic cough. However, it may have a rare presentation-like in our case-where rupture of tracheal diverticulum post-intubation and assisted ventilation for elective surgery led to pneumothorax, pneumopericardium, pneumomediastinum, pneumoperitoneum, and pneumoretroperitoneum. It may pose diagnostic dilemmas in such cases. An understanding of …

Cutaneous bronchogenic anomalies are very rare lesions, and most of them present as cysts and/or sinus tracts in the subcutaneous layer. We report a 15-year-old boy who presented with a crusted and papillomatous plaque over the right scapular region. Histopathological examination of this plaque revealed pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with papillary invaginations that included mucinous material. The lesion had no cyst or sinus formation and was bordered with smooth muscle bundles in stroma.

A case of mediastinal bronchial cyst misdiagnosed as schwannoma is reported. The patient had no chest pain, dyspnea, cough, sputum and hemop … ous cystic fluid and adhered to the esophagus and trachea. Postoperative pathological diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst. The patient recovered well after the operation, and has not recurred since follow-up.

We present an extremely rare case of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in the right upper thoracic region, with a wide tracheal communication and a right subclavian arterial blood supply. The MRI scan suggested a bronchogenic cyst. Although preoperative color Doppler and angiography were not performed, successful resection was carried out. The histology indicated a diagnosis of extralobar pulmonary sequestration.

Over the period 1983-1999 examination was done together with a surgical treatment of ten children with bronchogenic (BG) and enterogenic (EG) cysts of the mediastinum, their ages ranging between 2 months to 13 years, having been kept under medical surveillance in the clinic for thoracoabdominal surgery of developmental anomalies in children. In 80 percent of patients intrathoracic compression of the respiratory tracts caused by the above cysts was diagnosed. 87.5 percent of patients had inflammatory bronchopulmonary problems, 12.5 percent had secondary tracheomalacia as complications of BG and
