Ferron-driven photoferroic hysteresis in van der Waals CuInP2S6.

Controlling ferroelectric polarization with light promises a frontier for ultrafast optoelectronics. Yet the fundamental mechanism by which transient photoexcitation produces persistent photocurrent retention has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate a quasiparticle state that mediates photoferroic retention in the van der Waals ferroelectric CuInP2S6. We identify ferrons, collective excitations of dipole-carrying lattice vibrations, as carriers of optically imprinted polarization states. Narrowband resonant ferron oscillations at 2.16 THz exhibit a butterfly-shaped hysteresis that mirrors the

VACTERL Association and Unilateral Lambdoid Craniosynostosis.

We present the case of a 2-year-old Thai boy with VACTERL association who was also diagnosed with left unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis, a rare and atypical finding in this syndrome. The patient exhibited multiple congenital anomalies, including butterfly vertebrae, imperforate anus, and a patent ductus arteriosus. At 12 months of age, he was referred to the Craniofacial team due to posterior plagiocephaly and facial asymmetry. Imaging confirmed left lambdoid synostosis with effacement of the subarachnoid space, prompting surgical intervention. At 15 months, he underwent posterior cranial

Screening for TSEN54 Variants in Egyptian Patients with Pontocerebellar Malformations.

INTRODUCTION: Pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) represents a group of rare disorders with prenatal onset and time-dependent loss of brain parenchyma, predominantly affecting the cerebellum and pons with variable involvement of supratentorial structures. Radiologically and pathologically, they are characterized by small cerebellum and pons. Our study aimed to screen for the TSEN54 gene variants in Egyptian patients with PCH for proper counseling and to describe the brain MRI and the clinical phenotype and compare, them to those described in the literature. METHODS: Thirty patients from thirty E

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia as an initial presentation in children with systemic lupus erythematosus: two case reports.

We report the cases of two children who presented with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) as an initial presentation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Both patients had a positive Coombs test, anemia, and an increased number of spherocytes in their blood smear. The patient in Case 1 presented with fever, urticarial erythema, facial paresis, AIHA, and leucopenia. Immunological screening revealed low complement protein levels and positive anti-nuclear antibody, anti-double-stranded DNA, and antiphospholipid antibody results. A further laboratory workup revealed a positive lupus anticoagulan

Systematic DFT Studies on Binary Pseudo-tetrahedral Zintl Anions: Relative Stabilities and Reactivities towards Protons, Trimethylsilyl Groups, and Iron Complex Fragments.

Binary pseudo-tetrahedral Zintl anions composed of (semi)metal atoms of the p-block elements have proven to be excellent starting materials for the synthesis of a variety of heterometallic and intermetalloid transition metal-main group metal cluster anions. However, only ten of the theoretically possible 48 anions have been experimentally accessed to date as isolable salts. This brings up the question whether the other species are generally not achievable, or whether synthetic chemists just have not succeeded in their preparation so far. To contribute to a possible answer to this question, glo

Proper handling of the pyramidal lobe in minimal access thyroid procedures.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower part of the anterior surface of the neck between the fifth cervical and the first thoracic vertebra. Usually, it consists of two lateral, almost symmetrical lobes, the connective isthmus and the pyramidal lobe. The pyramidal lobe is a conical or cylindrical projection of the gland's parenchyma that extends superiorly to the thyroid cartilage or the hyoid bone. Most often, it originates from the isthmus and it is located to the left of the middle line. It can be absent in up to 50% of the cases. From the time of Theodor Kocher w

Malformed vertebrae: a clinical and imaging review.

A variety of structural developmental anomalies affect the vertebral column. Malformed vertebrae can arise secondary to errors of vertebral formation, fusion and/or segmentation and developmental variation. Malformations can be simple with little or no clinical consequence, or complex with serious structural and neurologic implications. These anomalies can occasionally mimic acute trauma (bipartite atlas versus Jefferson fracture, butterfly vertebra versus burst fracture), or predispose the affected individual to myelopathy. Accurate imaging interpretation of vertebral malformations requires k

Prenatal diagnosis of split cord malformation by ultrasound and fetal magnetic resonance imaging: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Split cord malformation (SCM) is rare congenital disorder of spine in which bony, fibrous, or cartilaginous septum subdivides partially or completely the vertebral canal. SCM can be associated with other spinal abnormalities such as spina bifida, Arnold-Chiari malformation, hemivertebra, butterfly vertebra, or kyphoscoliosis and also can be seen as part of Jarcho-Levin syndrome. Prenatal diagnosis of SCM is possible by ultrasonography (US). Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and amniotic fluid acetylcholine esterase (AF-AChE) levels can be helpful to rule out additional anoma

The diagnosis and treatment of nasal valve collapse.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The nasal valve is a complex structure that can be weakened from effects of aging, surgery, and trauma. A variety of methods have been described to strengthen the nasal valve region and prevent or treat nasal obstruction, such as batten grafts, spreader grafts, butterfly grafts, flare sutures, and suspension sutures. They will be briefly discussed here, but the intent of this review is to highlight the new developments in the treatment nasal valve collapse that have appeared in the literature over the last few years. RECENT FINDINGS: Various surgical techniques and approach

Segmental fracture of the scaphoid: report of a rare fracture pattern.

INTRODUCTION: To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports in the orthopaedic and trauma literature of true segmental fracture of the scaphoid bone. We present such a case with a brief discussion of the morphology and mechanisms of injury of scaphoid fractures and the problems they present, particularly in diagnosis. CASE HISTORY: A 43-year-old male with polytrauma sustained in a motorcycle road traffic accident was treated at our hospital. His injuries included a fracture initially thought to involve the waist of the scaphoid. Because he had bilateral upper limb injuries, we elected to

[Sivelestat sodium hydrate was effective for ARDS in a patient suffering from chronic rheumatoid arthritis with acute exacerbation after failing to respond to high dose steroid pulse therapy].

Sivelestat sodium hydrate (ELASPOL) was effective for ARDS in a fifty-year-old female patient suffering from chronic rheumatoid arthritis with acute exacerbation, after failing to respond to high dose steroid pulse therapy. In ICU, the patient had bilateral lung opacities, especially of the upper lobes, respiratory acidosis, hypercapnea (PaCO2 89 mmHg), and poor oxygenation (P/F ratio 193). High dose steroid pulse therapy had been performed, but oxygenation was not improved, and a low level of oxygenation (P/F ratio 155) persisted. Sivelestat was started two days after finishing the steroid pu

[Pars interarticularis reconstruction of spondylolysis using plates and screws with grafting without arthrodesis. Apropos of 78 cases].

Between 1978 and 1985, 78 reconstructions of the pars interarticularis were performed for painful spondylolysis in which there had been failure to respond to conservative methods and the subjacent disc was not degenerate. Sixty-five patients were reviewed with a follow-up greater than 2 years and a mean of 4.4 years. The concept of pars interarticularis reconstruction can be attributed to Kimura (1968), Buck (1970) and Nicol and Scott (1986). It consists of a posterior approach with freshening of the margins of the defect, the insertion of cancellous chips taken from the spinous processes, res

Anthocyanin incorporated pectin/sericin biofilms for food packaging and shrimp freshness monitoring.

Sensing biofilms for food preservation and spoilage monitoring have garnered increasing attention due to their promising applications in food safety. In this study, biodegradable films composed of pectin and sericin, incorporating anthocyanins from butterfly pea flowers (PSA), were successfully developed for preserving bananas and monitoring shrimp freshness. Optimal biofilm formulation was achieved using 10% anthocyanins, 40% glycerol, and a fabrication temperature of 70 °C. Functionally, the PSA biofilms demonstrated notable antioxidant capacity with DPPH and H₂O₂ radical scavenging activiti

Bioinspired Thermal Armor Enables Perovskite Meta-Aerogels with Spectrally Tailored Luminescence up to 600 K.

High-temperature flexible luminescent materials-enabling information transmission, safety monitoring, and operational reliability at extreme temperatures-have great potential for demanding applications such as metallurgy, petrochemical engineering, and fire protection. However, developing luminescent materials that integrate multicolor emission, high color purity, and mechanical flexibility at high temperatures remains an appealing yet formidable challenge. Herein, inspired by the multilevel architecture protecting pigments in the vividly colored butterfly's wing, we present a multiscale self-
