Cerebral hypoperfusion, capillary degeneration, and development of Alzheimer disease.

Considerable clinical and experimental data have shown that cerebral perfusion is progressively decreased during increased aging and that this decrease in brain blood flow is significantly greater in Alzheimer disease (AD). The authors propose that advanced aging with a comorbid condition, such as a vascular risk factor, which further decreases cerebral perfusion, promotes a critically attained threshold of cerebral hypoperfusion (CATCH). With time, CATCH induces brain capillary degeneration and suboptimal delivery of energy substrates to neuronal tissue. Because glucose is the main fuel of br

Capillary electrochemical enzyme immunoassay (CEEI) for phenobarbital in serum.

A competitive heterogeneous capillary enzyme immunoassay with electrochemical detection has been developed for phenobarbital in serum. The oxidized primary antibody was attached covalently to the modified interior surface of a microcapillary (22 microl). The competition between analyte phenobarbital and alkaline phosphatase labeled phenobarbital for a limited number of antibody binding sites was complete in 1.5 h. The enzymatic product (p-aminophenol) from the catalytic conversion of the substrate (p-aminophenyl phosphate) was detected by amperometric flow injection analysis. The calibration c

[Retinal capillary angioma. Clinical and molecular genetic studies].

UNLABELLED: Capillary retinal angiomas are rare vascular tumors that frequently occur in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (vHL) but may also be sporadic. In all patients presenting with this tumor a thorough search for other vHL-associated lesions must be performed. After identification of the vHL gene on the short arm of chromosome 3 (3p25-26), the diagnosis is supported by molecular genetic analysis. PATIENTS: In 20 patients with retinal angioma a clinical search for other manifestations of vHL was performed. In 5 patients only one angioma was present. In all patients molecular genetic tests for

Alveolar capillary dysplasia: diagnostic potential for cardiac catheterization.

OBJECTIVE: Alveolar capillary dysplasia is a rare cause of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. Infants with this condition die despite maximal medical intervention including inhaled nitric oxide therapy and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. To date, diagnosis of this lethal condition was made by open lung biopsy or during postmortem examination. We examined the possibility that distinct cardiac catheterization findings could be used in the diagnosis of this lethal disorder. STUDY DESIGN: We present three infants with fatal persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn refr

Lobular capillary hemangioma of the cauda equina. Case report.

This 56-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of low-back pain, sciatica, and paresthesias in the right S-1 dermatome. On examination the patient was shown to have a right-sided Lasegue's sign, normal strength, hypalgesia in the right S-1 dermatome, and a slight diminution of the right Achilles tendon reflex. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 2-cm intradural enhancing lesion at the level of the L-4 vertebra. Laminectomy of L3-L5 vertebrae was performed, and intradural exploration disclosed a blueberry-appearing tumor that was surrounded by an intense arachnoiditis and attached to

Applications of capillary electrochromatography analysis for formulated pesticide products.

The feasibility of using capillary electrochromatography (CEC) as a high-efficiency reversed-phase separation technique has been demonstrated for the analysis of some pesticide formulation products. Some operating parameters of CEC analysis (organic modifier content, pH of the buffer, and sample diluent) were studied using commercially available capillaries packed with Hypersil (Phenomenex, Torrance, CA, U.S.A.) octadecylsilic (ODS) particles. It was found that the resolution decreases in linear fashion with the increase in percent acetonitrile in the sample diluent for neutral components if a…

Capillary haemangiomas in association with morning glory disc anomaly.

PURPOSE AND METHOD: Capillary haemangiomas in children are usually isolated, but may have systemic associations. This accords with our finding of ocular malformations, especially "morning glory disc anomaly" (MGDA), in three children which are described. RESULTS: All three children had extensive capillary haemangiomas in combination with MGDA in one eye. One of the children also had microphthalmos in one eye and a partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Another child had sclerocornea in one eye and congenital heart defects. CONCLUSION: An association of extensive capillary haemangiomas with

The adequacy of capillary specimens for determining whole blood lead.

In response to demands for reliable alternatives to collection of venous specimens for determination of whole blood lead levels in children, the Centers for Disease Control has called for increased research into capillary methodologies. In this study, a three tiered approach was developed to assess the adequacy of capillary specimens for determining whole blood lead. Patient blood lead results from capillary and venous specimens were compared for obvious differences. Next, follow-up specimens for patients with elevated lead levels were compared with the initial results. In addition, experiment

Vascular growth factors and receptors in capillary hemangioblastomas and hemangiopericytomas.

Capillary hemangioblastomas and hemangiopericytomas are highly vascular central nervous system tumors of controversial origin. Of interest in their pathogenesis are mechanisms regulating endothelial cell growth. The endothelial cell mitogen vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) stimulates angiogenesis, and together with its two receptor tyrosine kinases VEGFR-1(FLT1) and VEGFR-2(KDR), is up-regulated during the malignant progression of gliomas. We have analyzed the expression of VEGF and its receptors, the related placental growth factor (PlGF) and the endothelial receptors FLT4 and Tie by

The effect of a time delay on the measurement of capillary blood gases.

Patients using domiciliary nasal ventilation, or long-term oxygen, require regular assessment which could be carried out in the home. Blood gas analysis may be regarded as an essential part of the assessment. The present study investigated the effect of a 1-h time delay on the measurement of capillary blood gases. Four samples of arterialized earlobe blood were collected from 15 outpatients. One sample was analysed immediately, the other three were stored on crushed ice and analysed at intervals of 30, 45, and 60 min post-collection. In order to examine any range effect, a wide range of PaO2 v

Speciation analysis of arsenic and selenium compounds by capillary electrophoresis.

High-performance capillary electrophoresis is applied to the separation of different inorganic and organic arsenic and selenium compounds. In comparison with UV-detection, an approach with conductivity detection is described expecting higher sensitivity and universality. In this case the capillary was statically modified with CTAB before the electromigration procedure. The separation was performed with an electrolyte system consisting of CHES and Triton X-100. Detection limits of 0.06 mg/L or lower were obtained for As(V) and Se(VI). Water samples of an arsenic-polluted tailing of tin mining p

Treatment of periocular capillary hemangioma with topical clobetasol propionate.

BACKGROUND: Hemangiomas pose a therapeutic challenge because they can threaten vision in infancy and early childhood. Intralesional injection of corticosteroid is widely regarded as the treatment of choice for hemangiomas which induce strabismus or significant refractive error, or occlude the visual axis. Ocular and systemic complications such as eyelid necrosis, central retinal artery occlusion, and adrenal suppression have been reported rarely after corticosteroid injection. METHODS: Three infants were treated with clobetasol propionate (Temovate) cream for vision-threatening eyelid hemangi

Quantitative analysis of serum proteins separated by capillary electrophoresis.

The possibility of open tubular capillary electrophoresis for clinical diagnostic use is examined. Capillary electrophoresis was performed in an untreated 50 microns (i.d.) x 100 cm (65 cm to detector) capillary with detection of absorbance at 200 nm. Conditions for the separation of serum proteins without adsorption to the capillary surface were established. Quantitative analyses of serum samples from 38 patients with liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, or polyclonal gammopathy by capillary electrophoresis were done and the results were compared with those by conventional agarose gel electro

Speciation of organomercurials in marine samples using capillary electrophoresis.

A rapid method for speciation and determination of organomercury compounds in biological samples of marine origin using Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) is reported. Organomercurials were extracted from the samples by means of the classical Westöö procedure thus giving organomercury-cysteine complexes which can be separated from each other by means of CE resulting in effective speciation. Electrophoretic separation was achieved in an open silica capillary tube at 15-18 kV using a 100mM sodium borate buffer (pH 8.35). All mercury species were distinctively separated within 12 min. Results are pre

Intussusceptive microvascular growth: a common alternative to capillary sprouting.

Intussusceptive capillary growth represents a new principle for microvascular growth as described in the lungs of growing rats. According to this concept, the capillary network expands by the formation of slender transcapillary tissue pillars, which give rise to new vascular meshes. The process was first observed in Mercox casts of the lung microvasculature, which revealed the existence of multiple tiny holes with diameters around 1.5 microns. Consecutive transmission electron microscopic investigation of serial sections demonstrated that the holes corresponded to slender tissue pillars (Burri

Macular capillary hemodynamic changes associated with Raynaud's phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Raynaud's phenomenon is an episodic, reversible spasm of the digital arterioles. Previous studies have suggested that Raynaud's phenomenon may be associated with alterations in the ocular circulation. The authors used the blue field entoptic simulation technique to study macular retinal capillary hemodynamics in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon. METHODS: Forty-two volunteers participated in the study: 18 with a connective tissue disease and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon, 8 with a connective tissue disease and no Raynaud's phenomenon, and 16 healthy volunteers. The mean of three

[Peri-capillary fibrin cuffs--an O2 diffusion block?].

In 42 patients with a chronic venous insufficiency Stage I-III transcutaneous oxygen tension was measured above the medial ankle and the leg ulcer edges respectively at 44 degrees C. The measurement point was biopsied and evaluated immunfluorescencehistologically for pericapillary fibrin cuffs (PCF). Fibrin cuffs are associated with decreased tcpO2-tensions. All PCF-positive biopsies were from areas with a tcpO2 less than 35 mmHg. The difference of PCF-positive and PCF-negative biopsies concerning the mean tcpO2 was significant (Wilcoxon-U-Test; p less than 0.001). The evidence of pericapillar

Human respiratory muscles: fibre morphology and capillary supply.

In man the diaphragm (DIA) and abdominal muscles comprise approximately 50% slow-twitch (ST) fibres, whereas a higher proportion (60%) is found in intercostal muscles and the scalenes. All respiratory muscles show an equal distribution of fast-twitch (FTa and b) fibres with the exception of the expiratory intercostal muscles which have few FTb fibres. The inspiratory muscles have a uniformly small fibre size, in contrast to the expiratory intercostal muscle fibres which are large. The fibre size of the inspiratory muscles is maintained with ageing, whereas that of the expiratory intercostal mu

The clinical utility of capillary blood glucose monitoring in the 1990s.

The purpose of this article is to explore the clinical utility of capillary blood glucose monitoring (BGM) in providing data for management decisions by persons with diabetes and by clinicians in acute and chronic care facilities, as well as in the private practice setting. Issues that affect clinical utility include: quality assurance for the BGM procedure, knowledge and beliefs regarding BGM of both the patient and the clinician, and communication patterns. Counseling patients regarding the frequency of their self-monitoring should be individualized and based on the type of treatment for man
