Gas Permeability of the Anisotropic Structure of a Frame Made of Concrete with the Addition of a Biocomponent-Application in Livestock Buildings.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies aimed at assessing thermal conductivity, compressive strength, water absorption and capillary action of samples in the form of ordinary concrete (reference sample-B1) and lightweight concrete with the addition of a biocomponent (C100) in the range of 3-31.2% porosity with varied morphology. Gas permeability studies were conducted for porous materials with an anisotropic structure. The measurement results indicate a significant effect of the type of material on thermal conductivity for B1, which is 3.05 W·(m·K)-1 and C100 equal to 0.09 W·(m

Decreased lung capillary blood volume post-exercise is compensated by increased membrane diffusing capacity.

The diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) decreases to below the pre-exercise value in the hours following a bout of intense exercise. Two mechanisms have been proposed: (1) development of pulmonary oedema and (2) redistribution of central blood volume to peripheral muscles causing a reduction in pulmonary capillary blood volume ( V(c)). In the present study DLCO, V(c) and the membrane diffusing capacity ( D(m)) were measured in nine healthy females using a rebreathing method, in contrast to the single breath technique employed in previous studies. DLCO, V(c) and D(m) were

[Delayed cerebral radionecrosis associated with brain edema].

In a patient with a delayed cerebral radionecrosis, we examined the ultrastructural changes of capillaries and discussed the cause of the development of severe brain edema which is one of specific features of the radionecrosis. A 42-year-old male was found to have cerebral radionecrosis two and one-half years following split-course radiotherapy which was done after subtotal excision of a left parasagittal meningioma. The surgical specimens were studied with conventional ultrathin section and freeze-fracture replica techniques. The common characteristics of capillary endothelia were attenuation

DangGuiSiNi Decoction and QiShenYiQi Pills Ameliorate Hyperpermeability and Edema Induced by Cold Exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Limb frostbite caused by cold exposure is a prevalent injury in winter. However, effective therapies remain limited, particularly for cold-induced edema. This study evaluated the therapeutic potential of DangGuiSiNi Decoction (DSD), QiShenYiQi Pills (QSYQ), and their combination in a rat model of cold-induced limb injury. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (180-220 g) were subjected to hind limb frostbite through 5-min dry ice exposure. Animals were administered with DSD, QSYQ, or their combination via oral gavage either 2 h pre-exposure or 5 min post-exposure, followed by daily dos

Mechanistic constraints in dengue severity: a systematic review with evidence stratification and agent-based evaluation of logical sufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Severe dengue is a vascular immunopathology characterized by plasma leakage, thrombocytopenia, hemorrhage, and, in its most critical form, dengue shock syndrome. Although NS1-mediated endothelial injury, glycocalyx disruption, inflammatory myeloid activation, and coagulation/platelet abnormalities have all been implicated, it remains unclear which mechanisms are most consistently supported and whether they form a coherent functional architecture capable of explaining vascular decompensation. This review asks two linked questions: which dengue mechanisms are supported by the contemp

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Exacerbate Secondary Injury via Promoting Neuroinflammation and Blood-Spinal Cord Barrier Disruption in Spinal Cord Injury.

As the first inflammatory cell recruited to the site of spinal cord injury (SCI), neutrophils were reported to be detrimental to SCI. However, the precise mechanisms as to how neutrophils exacerbate SCI remain largely obscure. In the present study, we demonstrated that infiltrated neutrophils produce neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which subsequently promote neuroinflammation and blood-spinal cord barrier disruption to aggravate spinal cord edema and neuronal apoptosis following SCI in rats. Both inhibition of NETs formation by peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) inhibitor and disruptio

ANGPTL4: a multifunctional protein involved in metabolism and vascular homeostasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Since the first discovery of Angiopoetin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) in 2000, the involvement of ANGPTL4 in different aspects of lipid metabolism and vascular biology has emerged as an important research field. In this review, we summarize the fundamental roles of ANGPTL4 in regulating metabolic and nonmetabolic functions and their implication in lipid metabolism and with several aspects of vascular function and dysfunction. RECENT FINDINGS: ANGPTL4 is a secreted glycoprotein with a physiological role in lipid metabolism and a predominant expression in adipose tissue and liver. ANGPTL

Apigenin and Ethaverine Hydrochloride Enhance Retinal Vascular Barrier In Vitro and In Vivo.

PURPOSE: This study aims to develop an impedance-based drug screening platform that will help identify drugs that can enhance the vascular barrier function by stabilizing vascular endothelial cell junctions. METHODS: Changes in permeability of cultured human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) monolayer were monitored in real-time with the xCELLigence RTCA system. Using this platform, we performed a primary screen of 2100 known drugs and confirmed hits using two additional secondary permeability assays: the transwell permeability assay and the XPerT assay. Acute cocaine administration alters permeability of blood-brain barrier in freely-moving rats- Evidence using miniaturized fluorescence microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine has a variety of negative effects on the central nervous system, including reports of decreased barrier function of brain microvascular endothelial cells. However, few studies have directly shown the effects of cocaine on blood-brain barrier (BBB) function in vivo. The miniature integrated fluorescence microscope (i.e., miniscope) technology was used to visualize cocaine-induced changes in BBB permeability in awake, freely-moving rats. METHODS: The miniscope was implanted in the prefrontal cortex of adult male rats. After recovery and acclimation, rats received an injectio

Myeloperoxidase: A new player in autoimmunity.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is the most toxic enzyme found in the azurophilic granules of neutrophils. MPO utilizes H2O2 to generate hypochlorous acid (HClO) and other reactive moieties, which kill pathogens during infections. In contrast, in the setting of sterile inflammation, MPO and MPO-derived oxidants are thought to be pathogenic, promoting inflammation and causing tissue damage. In contrast, evidence also exists that MPO can limit the extent of immune responses. Elevated MPO levels and activity are observed in a number of autoimmune diseases including in the central nervous system (CNS) of mu

Saturable leptin transport across the BBB persists in EAE mice.

We have shown that mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a model of multiple sclerosis, have upregulated leptin receptor expression in reactive astrocytes of the hippocampus, a region involved in sickness behavior. Leptin can exacerbate EAE when its serum concentration is high. Although leptin receptors in astrocytes modulate leptin transport across cultured endothelial cell monolayers, it is not known how leptin transport in EAE mice is regulated. Here, we determined brain and cervical spinal cord uptake of leptin in early and recovery stages of EAE, after either intraven

[A case of rocuronium-induced anaphylactic shock successfully treated with sugammadex].

We report a case of a 19-year-old male with rocuronium-induced anaphylactic shock. He was scheduled for endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis under general anesthesia. Induction of anesthesia was done with fentanyl, propofol and sevoflurane. Just after administration of rocuronium, he developed tachycardia with extended exanthema on the face, anterior chest wall and abdomen. He was difficult to ventilate manually with mask and then intubated without difficulty. The carotid arterial pulse was not palpable and adrenaline was given intermittently to maintain blood pressure. Although the

Hydrogen sulfide mitigates matrix metalloproteinase-9 activity and neurovascular permeability in hyperhomocysteinemic mice.

An elevated level of homocysteine (Hcy), known as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), was associated with neurovascular diseases. At physiological levels, hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) protected the neurovascular system. Because Hcy was also a precursor of hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), we sought to test whether the H(2)S protected the brain during HHcy. Cystathionine-beta-synthase heterozygous (CBS+/-) and wild type (WT) mice were supplemented with or without NaHS (30 microM/L, H(2)S donor) in drinking water. Blood flow and cerebral microvascular permeability in pial vessels were measured by intravital micros

A potential role for CD8+ T-cells as regulators of CNS vascular permeability.

The role of immune cells in promoting central nervous system (CNS) vascular permeability is poorly understood. In recent years, there is a growing body of literature that suggests CD8+ T-cells are potent mediators of vascular permeability in peripheral viral infections as well as in immune mediated neurological diseases. This review outlines the recent advances in tissue culture and animal models used to study vascular permeability. In addition, we put forth our hypothesis that CD8+ T-cells promote the opening of tight junctions between cerebral endothelial cells, enabling the infiltration of

Immunology and immunopathogenesis of dengue disease.

The pathophysiological basis of severe dengue disease (i.e., dengue hemorrhagic fever [DHF]), appears to be multifactorial, involving complex interactions among viral factors, host genetics, and the immunologic background of the host, principally prior exposure to dengue virus. Analysis of these processes has been limited to observational studies of naturally infected humans because there have not been useful animal models of dengue disease. Substantial evidence points to dengue virus-reactive T cells as a critical effector in the development of DHF. We are beginning to define the critical ele

Mechanisms of pulmonary microvascular dysfunction during severe burn injury.

Even in the absence of inhalational injury, acute lung injury is a common cause of morbidity and mortality for patients sustaining severe burns. Other than general supportive measures, there are few therapeutic options for improving survival in these critically ill patients. Numerous clinical and laboratory studies have implicated tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a and neutrophils as important participants in the pathogenesis of burn-induced lung injury. There is, however, little information regarding the mechanism by which these and other pro-inflammatory mediators affect the movement of fluid and

Pathophysiology of fluid imbalance.

Fluid imbalance can arise due to hypovolemia, normovolemia with maldistribution of fluid, and hypervolemia. Trauma is among the most frequent causes of hypovolemia, with its often profuse attendant blood loss. Another common cause is dehydration, which primarily entails loss of plasma rather than whole blood. The consequences of hypovolemia include reduction in circulating blood volume, lower venous return and, in profound cases, arterial hypotension. Myocardial failure may result from increased myocardial oxygen demand in conjunction with reduced tissue perfusion. Finally, anaerobic metabolis
