A total of 12 healthy mongrel dogs were subjected to the study. The left anterior descending artery was occluded. The occlusion was done for 15 min. At the end of this period, without removing the occlusion, the heart was retroperfused for 3 h. Then, occlusion was removed and reperfusion was supplied. Animals were divided into two equal groups. Six animals received iloprost and the other six control did not receive any additional treatment. In the iloprost group, the drug was administered into the coronary sinus. After 15 min following occlusion, iloprost was infused at a rate of 50 microg/min

BACKGROUND: Packed red blood cell transfusion (PRBCT) is a common intervention for neonatal anemia, primarily guided by hemoglobin thresholds. Electrical velocimetry (EV) portable, non-invasive impedance cardiography tool, provides continuous systemic hemodynamics (SH) parameter measurements, offering valuable insights into the physiological effects of transfusions.
METHODS: This prospective, observational cohort study, conducted between May 2021 and October 2023, included 30 extremely low gestational age neonates requiring elective PRBCT during their neonatal intensive care unit stay. Using

INTRODUCTION: We have previously hypothesized restricted muscle blood flow during speed skating, secondary to the high intramuscular forces intrinsic to the unique posture assumed by speed skaters and to the prolonged duty cycle of the skating stroke.
METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we studied speed skaters (N = 10) during submaximal and maximal cycling and in-line skating, in both low (knee angle = 107 degrees) and high (knee angle = 112 degrees) skating positions (CE vs SkL vs SkH). Supportive experiments evaluated muscle desaturation and lactate accumulation during on-ice speed skating a

INTRODUCTION: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) participates in various processes that are dysregulated in cardiovascular diseases. Supplementation with NAD+ may be cardioprotective. However, whether the protective effect exerted by NAD+ in heart failure (HF) is more effective before acute myocardial infarction (MI) or after remains unclear. The left anterior descending arteries of male Sprague Dawley rats and beagles that developed HF following MI were ligated for 1 week, following which the animals were treated for 4 weeks with low, medium, and high doses of NAD+ and LCZ696.

While the outcome of aortic repair for acute type-A aortic dissection has improved, overall mortality among patients who developed acute type-A aortic dissection remains extremely high. Hypotension in acute type-A aortic dissection patients is a critical condition that is associated with increased in-hospital mortality and neurologic events. The underlying causes of shock include acute aortic regurgitation, cardiac tamponade, and myocardial infarction. The most reasonable initial approach is to administer intravenous fluids to improve blood pressure, increase preload and cardiac output, and en

We investigated hemodynamic, cardiac morphofunctional, and cardiovascular autonomic adaptations in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) after aerobic physical training associated with chronic cholinergic stimulation. Fifty-four SHRs were divided into two groups: trained and untrained. Each group was further subdivided into three smaller groups: vehicle, treated with pyridostigmine bromide at 5 mg/kg/day, and treated with pyridostigmine bromide at 15 mg/kg/day. The following protocols were assessed: echocardiography, autonomic double pharmacological blockade, heart rate variability (HRV), blo

The myocardium is particularly susceptible to complications from iron loading in thalassemia major. In the first years of life, severe anemia leads to high-output cardiac failure and death if not treated. The necessary supportive blood transfusions create loading of iron that cannot be naturally excreted, and this iron accumulates within tissues, including the heart. Free unbound iron catalyzes the formation of toxic hydroxyl radicals, which damage cells and cause cardiac dysfunction. Significant cardiac siderosis may present by the age of 10 and may lead to acute clinical heart failure, which

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an increase in pulmonary arterial pressure secondary to narrowing and obliteration of the lumen of the lung vessels resulting in an increased resistance to flow. It is defined by a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥25 mm Hg at rest usually confirmed by right heart catheterization compared with normal mPAP of ≤20 mm Hg. The primary etiology of PH is unclear, although it can be from the heart, lung, or systemic disease. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at increased risk of developing PH, with up to 39% of patients with an arteriovenous fistul

Following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery, patients may experience vasoplegic or vasogenic shock syndrome. This condition has a variable incidence, reaching up to 44% in high-risk patients, with mortality rates ranging from 30% to 50%, primarily due to multiple organ failure. This complex condition is characterized by low arterial pressure, unresponsive vascular collapse to high doses of vasopressors, and biochemical signals of cellular oxygen debt. The cardiac output can either be low or abnormally elevated. A fundamental aspect of the pathophysiology of vasogenic syndrome after CPB is r

We report a tachyarrhythmia case of a 32-year-old female with a single ventricle and heterotaxy syndrome. She had surgery involving a total cavo-pulmonary connection procedure using an extra-cardiac conduit (EC) at the age of 17 years. A tachycardia was repetitively induced with single atrial extrastimuli. An activation map was created revealing a centrifugal propagation pattern from the high atrial wall adjacent to the EC. At that site, a structure resembling the crista terminalis was recognized with intracardiac echocardiography. Therefore, high output energy was required to eliminate the ta

The present study aimed at an investigation of the relation between arterial blood pressure and cardiac filling in patients with severe postural hypotension. Seven patients aged 49 to 84 years were studied during head-up tilt at three different tilt angles (median values: 0, 25, and 45 degrees) using intraarterial blood pressure recordings and estimates of left ventricular volumes by radioisotope ventriculography. Mean arterial blood pressure was reduced from 105 mmHg (79-129) in the horizontal position to 97 mmHg (61-112) and 83 mmHg (36-93; p < 0.0001), respectively, in parallel with a reduc

The cardiovascular effects of high doses of butorphanol (0.3-0.45 mg . kg-1) plus 60 per cent N2O anaesthesia were measured at unconsciousness, following tracheal intubation, and immediately before and at one and ten minutes after surgical stimulation in 17 A.S.A. class I and II patients undergoing elective gastric or gall bladder surgery. Butorphanol and N2O produced unconsciousness with only small decreases in heart rate and cardiac output but did not result in sufficient analgesia to block or treat stimulation of the cardiovascular system secondary to tracheal intubation or surgical incisio

Cardiogenic shock (CS) occurs infrequently in pregnancy and has a high mortality rate. Medical treatment options are few, with limited evidence of efficacy. Temporary mechanical circulatory supports (tMCS) may play a key role in addressing this therapeutic lacuna. We report successfully managing second-trimester CS using an Impella 5.5 micro-axial pump. Our patient presented in the second-trimester with CS. Hemodynamic parameters indicated biventricular dysfunction (low cardiac index, low pulmonary artery pulsatility index). She received diuresis and inotropic support to optimize her fluid sta

The risk of heart failure (HF) is prominently increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The objectives of this study were to establish a murine model of diabetic cardiomyopathy induced by feeding a high-sugar/high-fat (HSHF) diet and to evaluate the effect of reconstituted HDLMilano administration on established HF in this model. The HSHF diet was initiated at the age of 12 weeks and continued for 16 weeks. To investigate the effect of reconstituted HDLMilano on HF, eight intraperitoneal administrations of MDCO-216 (100 mg/kg protein concentration) or of an identical volume of contr

Heart failure (HF) is a progressive clinical syndrome characterized by structural and functional cardiac impairment, leading to reduced cardiac output, hemodynamic instability, and high morbidity and mortality. Emerging evidence highlights calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) as a crucial regulator of cardiovascular homeostasis, owing to its potent vasodilatory, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties. CGRP, predominantly synthesized by sensory neurons, maintains vascular tone, enhances myocardial perfusion, and counteracts maladaptive neurohormonal activation involv
