Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the colon is a rare tumor that accounts for 0.1%-0.2% of colonic malignancies. However, pure SCC of the cecum is extremely rare. Although SCC of the colon is a rare complication of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), SCC of the cecum in the context of IBD has not been previously reported in the English literature. We report a case of the coexistence of SCC of the cecum and a carcinoid tumor in a 46-year-old female with long-standing pan-ulcerative colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata is a very rare benign condition of the peritoneal cavity that may mimic peritoneal carcinomatosis or metastatic leiomyosarcomas. It mainly develops in association with pregnancy, but is also rarely associated with endometriosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old Asian woman presented to our hospital with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. Her abdominopelvic computed tomography scan showed a 1.2cm-sized nodule at the appendiceal tip, but no other abnormal findings. We suspected acute appendicitis and performed an exploratory laparos

Angiosarcomas of the small intestine are rare and present non-specifically. They usually manifest with abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, anaemia and gastrointestinal bleeding. Diagnosis is often challenging and occurs at an advanced tumour stage. We describe a case of a terminal ileum angiosarcoma masquerading as an appendiceal abscess, and discuss salient clinicopathological features in diagnosing and managing this disease.

We describe a rare case of a giant appendiceal mucocele as the leading point with ileocolic intussusception and the cause of acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain in an adult patient, which is correctly diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) imaging before surgery.

Lesions in the terminal ileum are often difficult to visualize on routine small bowel follow-through (SBFT) and may require further investigation to rule out associated abnormalities in the ileocecal valve or cecum. This may be done by peroral pneumocolon at the same sitting as the SBFT, but may require bowel preparation. Two cases of cecal carcinoma that were initially diagnosed as Crohn's disease on SBFT without further investigation of the cecum are reported.

We present the first report of laparoscopic resection for colorectal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A 76-year-old man was found to have MALT lymphoma of the cecum during colonoscopy. He underwent a laparoscopically assisted ileocecal resection after admission and was discharged 9 days postoperatively without any complications. Colorectal MALT lymphoma is a rare neoplasm that responds favorably to locally directed therapy, because it tends to remain localized for prolonged periods. Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal MALT lymphoma is considered feasible because it is minimal

On the basis of a case of ileocolonic intussusception in a 35-year-old patient secondary to an obstructive lipoma of the caecum, the authors review the literature and discuss the clinical and radiological aspects of this disease. The diagnosis was established by CT scan and barium enema before surgery. Adult intussusception is a rare disease, which does not have any specific clinical features. Radiological imaging is the only complementary investigation which can suggest the diagnosis.

Mucoceles of the appendix and associated pseudomyxoma peritonei are a heterogeneous group comprising various histopathologic lesions with differing prognoses. Between 1983 and 1990, we treated eight patients with appendiceal mucocele, three cystadenomas and five cystadenocarcinomas, three of which had accompanying pseudomyxoma peritonei. All patients were more than 50 years of age. Women outnumbered men by seven to one. Preoperative diagnosis was acute appendicitis or appendiceal abscess in all instances of mucocele unaccompanied by pseudomyxoma peritonei. Ultrasound of the abdomen, together w

The case of a 78 years old patient with impressive flush symptoms is reported. 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid and serotonin were elevated. The responsible pathomorphological structure is a 8 x 4.5 x 6 cm ileocaecal neoplasm. Pre-, intra- and postoperatively liver metastases could not be detected during a 18 month period. After surgery of the carcinoid flush disappeared, so that the tumour seize resulting in enormous secretion of metabolites with endocrine activity should be claimed responsible for causing this symptom.

This report presents the case of a 62-year-old man with a collision tumor of primary malignant lymphoma and adenocarcinoma in the cecum. All regional mesenteric lymph nodes that were removed surgically were found to be occupied by lymphoma cells and no lymph nodes contained any cancer cells, although the primary carcinomas did exhibit lymphatic invasion. Malignant lymphoma was also seen in the duodenum. Systemic chemotherapy was administered for the malignant lymphoma, and a complete response was thus obtained. However, just after chemotherapy multiple liver metastases of adenocarcinoma emerge

An appendiceal mucocele is a rare clinical entity often mimicking that of acute appendicitis in a majority of cases leading to incidental intraoperative findings. Nevertheless, appropriate diagnosis is vital prior to surgery to prevent complications such as pseudomyxoma peritonei. This report details a case of a man in his 70s, who was admitted to the emergency department with right iliac fossa pain with imaging showing wall thickening of the caecum and the ascending colon. During surgery, a calcified appendix raised the suspicion of a neoplastic process leading to a right hemicolectomy. The h

Isolated ischemic necrosis of the cecum (INC) is an uncommon benign condition that occurs most often in elderly patients. The clinical presentation and radiographic findings often mimic acute appendicitis or malignancy. This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathologic features of mass-forming INC. Eleven INC patients who presented with cecal masses were identified by searching the electronic medical record system in two large academic centers. The clinical and pathological features, including symptoms, imaging, endoscopic and surgical findings, histomorphology, and follow-up, were retrosp

INTRODUCTION: Colonic cancer presenting as a remote abscess in the gluteal region, abdominal wall, retroperitoneal region, groin or thigh is rare.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of advanced carcinoma of the caecum in an elderly lady without bowel symptoms presenting as right gluteal abscess.
DISCUSSION: In the differential diagnosis of gluteal/ upper thigh abscess the rare possibility of colonic cancer perforation as a cause should be considered.

Canine gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a recent subtype of gastrointestinal spindle cell tumor recognized with the increasing use of immunohistochemistry. To our knowledge, no imaging features have been described in immunostochemically confirmed canine GISTs. The objective of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to describe ultrasonographic features of canine GISTs compared with other spindle cell tumors. Thirty-seven dogs with an ultrasonographically visible gastrointestinal mass and a histopathologic diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasia were examined. Immunohistochemistry

An unexpected inflammatory cecal mass of uncertain etiology encountered during surgery for presumed appendicitis poses a dilemma to the surgeon when deciding the appropriate operative management. A retrospective study was performed to review the pathology and surgical management of this condition. Among 3224 patients who had emergency surgery for a diagnosis of acute appendicitis between January 1990 and December 1997, a group of 52 patients (1.6%) underwent either ileocecal resection or right hemicolectomy for an inflammatory cecal mass of uncertain etiology. The final pathologic diagnosis wa
