Lymphoma-associated pancreatitis as a presenting manifestation of immunoblastic lymphoma.

A 55 year old man presented with clinical signs and symptoms of subacute pancreatitis of unknown aetiology. Two weeks later, inguinal lymphadenopathy developed and a lymph node biopsy revealed a B cell immunoblastic lymphoma. Computerized tomography showed enlargement of the pancreas and imaging features consistent with pancreatitis. Administration of VACOP-B combination chemotherapy achieved complete resolution of the pancreatic mass and the enlarged lymph nodes. We consider this patient to have had lymphoma associated pancreatitis. This case represents a rare clinical presentation of lymphom

Natural Unusual Myeloblastosis in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus): Histopathologic Diagnosis.

The subgroup J avian leukosis virus favors the myelocytic series cells and causes myeloid leukosis (myeloblastosis and myelocytomatosis). Natural cases of myeloblastosis (myeloblastic myeloid leukosis) are uncommon and usually occur in adult chickens. This paper describes clinical signs and gross and histopathologic features of myeloblastosis in an adult female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) that was infected naturally. At necropsy, the spleen was greatly enlarged (enlarged seven or eight times normal) while the other visceral organs were normal. Histologic examination of the spleen indi

Fibrous tumor of the breast in a postmenopausal woman receiving estrogen.

Fibrous tumor of the breast is a rare, benign stromal proliferation with atrophy of the epithelial component. Almost all patients who develop fibrous tumors are premenopausal. An unusual example of fibrous tumor of the breast is reported in a 62-year-old postmenopausal woman. The mass, first noted 1 year previously, progressively enlarged over the year. The patient noted a history of taking exogenous estrogens for 10 years. Intense estrogen administration during the year of enlargement may be associated with accelerated growth of the tumor. In addition, positive nuclear staining for estrogen r

Tuberculous gingival enlargement: A rare clinical manifestation.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an inflammatory granulomatous disease that rarely presents as primary lesion in gingiva. Gingival involvement has been reported in only a very limited number of cases. A 13-year-old boy presented with gingival enlargement in the maxillary and mandibular anterior region associated with enlargement of lower lip with no systemic manifestations. He had a history of tuberculous lymphadenitis before 5 years which was inadequately treated. The patient's erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 70 mm/h. Histopathological report of the gingival lesion revealed noncaseating granulomas wit

[Epidermoid carcinoma of the kidney].

Epidermoid carcinoma of the kidney is a rare malignant tumor, characterized by high invasiveness, poor prognosis, and the association of renal stone and renal infection. Very little reports about its sonographic appearance were mentioned in the literature. We present a case of epidermoid carcinoma of the kidney. Its ultrasonography showed a heterogeneous renal mass with perirenal and pararenal invasion, destruction of the renal pelvis, and preservation of enlarged reniform outline. Although this tumor should be differentiated with renal cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, renal metast

Angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy after infectious mononucleosis.

Angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy occurred in a 46-year-old man 16 months after an episode of infectious mononucleosis induced by Epstein-Barr (EB) virus. The features of infectious mononucleosis included fever, pharyngitis, lymph gland enlargement, hepatosplenomegaly, hyperbasophilic mononuclear cells, and IgM antibodies to EB virus, although heterophile antibodies were not detected. The illness was severe and prolonged and included an asymptomatic measles virus infection. Over a year later massive enlargement of the lymph nodes led to a biopsy, which showed a diffuse infiltration with lymph

Ultrastructure of the capsule of Bacillus megaterium ATCC 19213.

The ultrastructure of the firmly adherent capsule produced by Bacillus megaterium cultured on fructose mineral salts medium was examined using thin sectioning, freeze-etching, and critical point drying by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The capsule material was shown to be fibrillar, with most fibrils containing bulbous protrusions. Two types of fibres were resolved. These were termed primary and cross-linking fibres. Primary fibres originated at the cell wall and had a diameter of 34-50 nm. They also contained bulbous protrusions and enlarged areas where branching occurred. Cro

T-cell lymphoma in a Himalayan black bear in China.

A 12-y-old Himalayan black bear suddenly developed depression, anorexia, cough, and dyspnea and died at the Ordos Zoo, China. At autopsy, the mesenteric and cranial mediastinal lymph nodes (LNs) were enlarged; the largest cranial mediastinal LN was ~13 cm in diameter. Scattered-to-diffuse, rounded-or-oval, gray, firm 1-6-mm nodules were observed on the surfaces of the spleen, liver, lungs, and small intestine. Histologically, the enlarged cranial mediastinal and mesenteric LNs, spleen, small intestine, lungs, and liver contained dense populations of neoplastic lymphoid cells (NLCs). The NLCs w

Lymphocyte populations with abnormal kappa:lambda ratios in reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.

The lymph node biopsies of 12 patients with lymphadenopathy due to reactive hyperplasia contained lymphocyte populations with increased percentages of B-cells and abnormal numbers of cells with single class surface immunoglobulins. Ten patients were followed for periods of 3-30 months: one developed a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and one Hodgkin's disease. One other has persisting lymph node enlargement. Two patients had nonlymphoid malignancies. The other six remain well without lymphadenopathy. Twenty-five of 40 patients with reactive lymph node hyperplasia and normal kappa/lambda ratios followed

Relationship between adipocyte hypertrophy and metabolic disturbances.

Enlargement of fat cells is known to be a factor stimulating metabolic rates in adipose tissue and thus playing a role in the pathogenesis of certain metabolic disorders. Excessive adipose-cell hypertrophy of the same degree was observed in disturbances of carbohydrate (e.g. in subclinical or maturity onset diabetes) as well as of triglyceride metabolism, despite the fact that body weight in these patient groups was lower than in control subjects (with the exception of subclinical diabetics). Significant correlations between adipocyte volumes and serum triglyceride levels are in agreement with

The accumulation of macrophages expressing myeloid-related protein 8 (MRP8) and MRP14 in the spleen of BALB/cA mice during infection with Plasmodium berghei.

Splenomegaly is one of the typical symptoms of malaria. However, the pathogenesis of splenic enlargement still remains unclear. Spleen is a major organ for clearance of malaria parasites, but excessive response to the parasites can lead to splenomegaly. Myeloid-related protein (MRP) 8 and MRP14 are expressed by myeloid cells and are regarded as marker proteins of an immature and inflammatory subtype of macrophage. Previous studies have demonstrated that accumulation of MRP8(+) and MRP14(+) macrophages is associated with the pathological changes associated with various inflammatory diseases. In

Composite mycosis fungoides and B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Concordant or composite mycosis fungoides and B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is exceedingly rare, with only 10 cases previously described to our knowledge. We report a case of a 64-year-old woman who developed generalized erythroderma 5 years after the diagnosis of early stage B-CLL. Over the next 6 years of her clinical course multiple sequential samples of skin, peripheral blood, and one enlarged lymph node were studied in detail by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and electron microscopy. The progressive cutaneous infiltrates were initially character

Cochlear microphonics in Ménière's disease.

The pathophysiology of hearing deterioration in Ménière's disease (MD) is unclear. Hair cell loss has been proposed to be the cause of severe hearing loss in Ménière's disease. The cochlear microphonic (CM) is known to be the receptor potential of the outer hair cells in the cochlea. This study measured the CM in Ménière's disease and investigated its relationship with the degree of hearing impairment and endolymphatic hydrops. Transtympanic electrocochleography (ECoG) using rarefaction (RAR) and condensation (CON) tonebursts at 1 kHz was performed on 130 ears of 119 patients. Ninety six ears

Hypercalcaemia in association with Sertoli cell tumour in a dog.

A 9-year-old, presumed male castrated mixed breed dog was evaluated for lethargy, hyporexia, polyuria, polydipsia and diffuse gynaecomastia. Bloodwork revealed severe hypercalcaemia and hyposthenuria. CT scan showed a caudal abdominal mass consistent with a Sertoli cell tumour on cytology. Diffuse, nodular mammary gland enlargement was consistent with mammary gland hyperplasia on cytology. A malignancy panel was inconsistent with hyperparathyroidism and showed a normal PTHrP. Abdominal exploratory laparotomy, abdominal mass resections and right chain mammectomy were performed. Sertoli cell tum

Early Pseudoprogression Mimicking Pneumonitis After Tarlatamab Therapy: A Case Suggestive of Immune Cell-Associated Respiratory Syndrome (ICARS).

Tarlatamab, a DLL3-targeting bispecific T-cell engager, is an emerging option for previously treated small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Pseudoprogression with tarlatamab is poorly defined and can mimic drug-induced pneumonitis. A 77-year-old man with extensive-stage SCLC developed fever and hypoxia by Day 3 after the first 1-mg dose, with rapid tumour enlargement and diffuse left-lung infiltrates. High-dose methylprednisolone and tocilizumab produced prompt clinical and radiographic improvement; follow-up imaging showed resolution of infiltrates and tumour regression below baseline, consistent wit

Splenic sequestration in the adult: cross sectional imaging appearance of an uncommon diagnosis.

Acute splenic sequestration crisis, the sudden pooling of red blood cells in the spleen, is an emergent process typically seen in children with homozygous sickle cell disease. Splenic sequestration has rarely been reported in adults with heterozygous sickle cell conditions, including sickle cell beta(+)-thalassemia disease (HbS/β+-thalassemia). Here we present a case of a 32-year-old man with HbS/β+-thalassemia who suffered an acute splenic sequestration crisis. We review the CT and ultrasound appearance of splenic sequestration, which include splenic enlargement and an irregular rim of hypoen

Spontaneous T/NK-cell lymphoma associated with simian lymphocryptovirus in a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

A 5-year-old female Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) was humanely destroyed because of severe anaemia with poor response to treatment. At necropsy examination, marked splenomegaly and systemic enlargement of lymph nodes were observed. Microscopical examination revealed diffuse proliferation of neoplastic lymphoid cells in the spleen and lymph nodes with infiltration of the liver, lung, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and bone marrow. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells expressed CD3 and CD4, but not CD20, CD79α or CD8, consistent with a T helper phenotype. A portion of neoplastic cells

Pathology of sarcoptic mange in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes): macroscopic and histologic characterization of three disease stages.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease that can have a devastating impact on affected wild mammal populations. There are notable variations in the clinical and pathologic picture of sarcoptic mange among species and among conspecifics. However, the origin of these variations is unclear. We propose a classification scheme for skin lesions associated with Sarcoptes scabiei infestation to provide a basis for a subsequent risk factor analysis. We conducted a case-control study focused on macroscopic and histologic examination of the skin, using 279 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) found dead
