Screening, brief Intervention, and referral to treatment: Persistence of effects in adolescents at risk.

This observational longitudinal study examines substance use reduction following implementation of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in a specialized foster care clinic. Following SBIRT we expected to observe reductions in past 30-day use of alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis, sustained to 6 months post-intervention. Adolescents (10-20 years) received standardized screening via the CRAFFT2.1 + N. An interventionist trained in the brief negotiated interview delivered brief intervention. Enrolled participants completed surveys in REDCap that assessed past 30-day use of

Risk-taking and sensation-seeking propensity in postinstitutionalized early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Youth with histories of institutional/orphanage care are at increased risk for externalizing and internalizing problems during childhood and adolescence. Although these problems have been well described, the related adolescent behaviors of risk-taking and sensation-seeking have not yet been explored in this population. This study examined risk-taking and sensation-seeking propensity, and associations with conduct problems and depressive symptoms, in early adolescents who were adopted as young children from institutional care. METHODS: Risk-taking and sensation-seeking propensities

Perceptions of children and community members concerning the circumstances of orphans in rural Zimbabwe.

Focus group discussions and interviews were held with 40 orphans, 25 caretakers and 33 other community workers from a rural area near Mutare, Zimbabwe. Orphan concerns included feeling different from other children, stress, stigmatization, exploitation, schooling, lack of visits and neglect of support responsibilities by relatives. Many community members, while recognizing their limitations due to poverty, were already actively helping orphans and caretakers. Extended family networks are the primary resource for orphans, though some relatives exploit orphans or fail to fulfil their responsibil

Children of alcoholics.

The familial nature of alcoholism is well established, but the interaction of nature and nurture remains unresolved. Other effects of alcoholic parents on the psychopathology of their children are poorly documented, with studies variably claiming that there is no discernible impact or that there is a significantly higher incidence of problems, particularly in the area of antisocial and aggressive behaviour. The relative importance of family disharmony and disruption which so often accompanies alcohol abuse, as against the impact of the alcohol abuse itself, is rarely considered. The literature

Prevalence of diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, and malaria over time (1995-2017): A regional analysis of 23 countries in West and Central Africa.

BACKGOUND: The global community recognizes the urgent need to end preventable child deaths, making it an essential part of the third Sustainable Development Goal. Pneumonia, diarrhoea, and malaria still remain the leading causes of deaths among children under five years, especially in one of the poorest geographic regions of the world - West and Central Africa. This region carries a disproportionately high share of the global burden, both in terms of morbidity and mortality. The study aims to assess levels and trends of the prevalence of these three childhood diseases in West and Central Afric

Global trends and burdens of neglected tropical diseases and malaria from 1990 to 2021: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases and malaria (NTDm) afflict the most disadvantaged communities, causing chronic and devastating illnesses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiological features of NTDm from 1990 to 2021 to provide essential information for policy choices to reduce the incidence of NTDm. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 provided information on the incidence, mortality, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) rates of NTDs and malaria from 1990 to 2021. Prevalence and trends were analysed globally as well as by region, sex,

Decision regret among couples experiencing infertility: a mixed methods longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Decisions for how to resolve infertility are complex and may lead to regret. We examined whether couples and individuals who sought a consultation from a reproductive specialist for infertility later expressed decisional regret about their family-building choices and whether regret was associated with parental role, family-building paths, or outcomes. METHODS: This longitudinal mixed methods study included women and their partners who completed a questionnaire prior to their initial consultation with a reproductive specialist and 6 years later. The six-year questionnaire included

Youth Needs at Intake into Trauma-Informed Group Homes and Response to Services: An Examination of Trauma Exposure, Symptoms, and Clinical Impression.

Trauma-informed care is recommended to improve the quality of group home services for youth. Youth exposure to trauma and associated symptoms are important factors involved in making the clinical impression that determines treatment services. This study considered three dimensions of trauma (exposure, symptoms, and clinical impression) to determine associations with behavioral incidents of youth in trauma-informed group homes and how trauma was related to changes in psychopathology from intake to discharge. Archival records of youth (N = 1,096), age 9-18 (M = 15.7 years) who received services

Caregivers' experiences of feeding children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to investigate the feeding experiences of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy, in any setting, by identifying, critically appraising, and synthesizing the relevant literature. INTRODUCTION: Feeding difficulties in children with cerebral palsy are common and affect both children and caregivers. Difficulties include dysphagia and risk of aspiration, which can result in poor growth and development. Caregivers find feeding challenging and stressful due to the time involved, fear of aspiration, and the pressure of meeting other family demands. Fin

Assessment of parental involvement in child health services for early childhood development and associated factors among children under 5 years old in Kolfe Keraniyo Sub City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

Parents play a key role in shaping their children's feelings of safety through supportive approaches that foster mental and social growth. In contrast, harsh, abusive, or erratic parenting can erode the bond between parent and child, which may result in antisocial behaviors and mental health challenges in children. Hence, the importance of parents in delivering healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, and emotional support is vital for their growth and development. This study aimed to evaluate the participation of parents in child health (CH) services for early childhood development and the related fac

Perceptions of information and participation in child and adolescent mental health care: a comparison of patient and caregiver reports across inpatient and day hospital settings.

BACKGROUND: In child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), the principles of information provision and participatory decision-making have gained prominence, reflecting both legal mandates and ethical standards. Within the last few years, the number of day hospital treatment programs has increased and political decisions led to a reduction in inpatient beds. Given the structural and procedural differences between the treatment settings, this study examines whether patients' and caregivers' ratings of information and participation differ between an inpatient treatment and a day hospital

Sitting Together and Reaching to Play Physical Therapy Affects Dyadic Emotional Availability in Children With Neuromotor Delay and Their Families.

OBJECTIVE: Emotional availability (EA) describes caregiver-child emotional attunement and is critical to fostering adaptive development. Although early physical therapist interventions adopt a family centered approach, the impact of interventions on families is often not quantified. This study compares EA in dyads receiving usual care-early intervention (UC-EI) versus sitting together and reaching to play (START-Play) in addition to UC-EI. METHODS: Data were drawn from 106 children with neuromotor delay who were 7 to 16 months old at baseline (mean = 10.5 months) and from their caregiver (91%

Using community health workers to deliver a scalable integrated parenting program in rural China: A cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Inadequate care during early childhood can lead to long-term deficits in skill development. Parenting programs are promising tools for improving parenting practices and opportunities for healthy development. We implemented a non-masked cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural China in order to assess the effectiveness of an integrated home-visitation program that includes both psychosocial stimulation and health promotion at fostering development and health outcomes of infants and toddlers in rural China. All 6-18 month-old children of two rural townships and their main caregiver were enro

Childhood experiences of abuse, later substance use, and parenting outcomes among low-income mothers.

Relationships among childhood abuse, subsequent adult functioning (with a focus on severity of substance abuse), and child placement were explored in an urban sample of low-income, African-American mothers. Childhood sexual trauma and age were found to be correlated with severity of later drug use; history of physical or sexual abuse was significantly related to psychological distress in adulthood; and addiction was highly correlated with child placement. Implications of the findings are discussed, with particular reference to collaborations between child welfare and substance abuse treatment.

Dynamic Relations Between Psychological Resilience and Post-Concussion Symptoms in Children With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Versus Orthopedic Injury: An A-CAP Study.

Higher psychological resilience is correlated with less severe post-concussion symptoms (PCS) after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in children, but the directional nature of this relationship remains uncertain. Although traditionally regarded as a stable, trait-like construct, resilience may be malleable and potentially influenced by mTBI and post-concussive symptoms. The current study sought to examine the stability of resilience, elucidate the dynamic nature of the resilience-PCS relation, and determine whether resilience-symptom associations are specific to mTBI or applicable to traumat

Suubi4Stigma study protocol: a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial to address HIV-associated stigma among adolescents living with HIV in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is heavily burdened by HIV, with 85% of the global new infections among adolescents happening in the region. With advances in medication and national policies promoting antiretroviral therapy (ART), children < 15 years living with HIV (CLWH) continue to grow with a chronic, highly stigmatized disease. Unfortunately, the stigma they experience results in much lower quality of life, including poor mental health and treatment outcomes. Family members also experience stigma and shame by virtue of their association with an HIV-infected family member. Yet, stigma
