Babesia vesperuginis is described from blood of two species of British bat: Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Myotis mystacinus. Reticulocytes appeared significantly elevated in blood films of P. pipistrellus infected with B. vesperuginis compared with uninfected laboratory-maintained bats or apparently uninfected wild-caught bats. Infected captive bats had significantly enlarged spleens. B. vesperuginis was transmitted by inoculation of infected blood to 5 uninfected captive P. pipistrellus. The course of infection followed a pattern of a rising parasitaemia accompanied by a rise in reticulocytes

Analyses of meiotic pairing and synaptonemal complexes of the composite sex chromosomes of male phyllostomid bats with X-autosome or X- and Y-autosome translocations were performed using Giemsa and silver staining procedures. Typical mammalian sex vesicles were absent in all species analyzed. Stenodermatine species with X-autosome translocations possessed an open ring and tail configuration of the XY1Y2 trivalent. Species with both X- and Y-autosome translocations possessed a closed ring and tail configuration of the neo-XY bivalent. In both cases, the tail represented the autosomal short arm

Histoplasmosis is a rare disease in the Cape Province. The diagnosis of acute disseminated histoplasmosis in a patient who presented at Groote Schuur Hospital 3 weeks after a caving expedition, led to the identification of acute benign pulmonary histoplasmosis in 9 other people who had explored the same cave. Possible explanations for this outbreak are discussed.

An epidemic of acute prolonged febrile respiratory disease affecting nine of 19 workers on a Maryland State bridge maintenance crew was diagnosed as histoplasmosis by serologic testing in all and by isolation of the organism in one. In our investigation, it was revealed that work on a particular bridge was associated with disease. Culture of bat guano from the site two months later revealed H. capsulatum. Four previously uninfected epidemiologic investigators also became ill with histoplasmosis following collection of soil and bat guano. This outbreak reveals that bats and bat guano are a sour

Arthropod molting hormones, the so-called ecdysteroids were experimentally shown to have anabolic effects in higher vertebrates, promoting energy supply, protein synthesis, and tissue growth. Insectivorous songbirds (Aves: Passeriformes) and bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) were demonstrated to have naturally acquired ecdysteroids in their blood. However, it is not known if partly insectivorous or artificially insect-fed vertebrates would also have ecdysteroids in their circulation. The aim of this screening study was to clarify this, by collecting blood samples of mammals, birds and reptiles that …

Bats, of the order Chiroptera, comprise over 1,400 species and account for over 21% of all currently described mammalian species. However, despite this huge group of mammals, a remarkably small number of bacterial species have been described from this group. In a continuing study of non-human mammals, dozens of strains were isolated from anaerobic guano-pile enrichments collected in a bat cave near Protem, MO, USA. Of these, two novel taxa were identified and designated BS-2T and BS-20T; both were rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and phylogen…

RESULTS: Chiroptera in general and bat species like Rousettus aegyptiacus and Hipposideros caffer in particular are natural reservoirs of the Marburg virus. MVD-infected nonhuman primate African fruit-bat and the MVD-infected humans pose significant risk in human infec …

Nectar-feeding bats exhibit a range of specialized adaptations that allow them to extract nectar from flowers efficiently. These adaptations include tongue morphological traits and feeding strategies that reflect varying degrees of specialization to nectarivory. While some aspects of the drinking mechanics of highly specialized nectar bats have been studied, little is known about the feeding behaviors of non-specialized species such as Phyllostomus discolor. This study compares the nectar extraction behaviors of P. discolor and the specialized Anoura geoffroyi, examining morphological and biom

The smallest flying vertebrate pollinators, including hummingbirds and nectar bats, exist at an energetic extreme. Nectarivores must balance the need for high rates of metabolic power output to sustain comparatively high costs of thermoregulation and the intense energetic demands of forward and hovering flight with the constraint against building and carrying large, heavy energy stores. Work over the past half century has quantified metabolic rate and daily energy requirements for these animals and revealed that hummingbirds and nectar bats achieve energy homeostasis through exceptional physio

Cave ecosystems are often underrepresented in global conservation management, despite frequently holding diverse biota. As key providers of allochthonous nutrient, cave-roosting bats are important in sustaining cave food webs through guano deposits. However, bat populations globally are declining, thereby threatening cavernicolous biodiversity. Oceanic island caves, in particular, face elevated risks due to their additional isolation which may be expected to increase vulnerability of their associated biodiversity to extinction. Understanding the influence of cave-roosting bat on eventual cave-

Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV) is an emerging zoonotic virus that causes pneumonia in humans. We previously isolated the PRV strain Nachunsulwe-57 (N57) from a Zambian fruit bat and demonstrated its low virulence in laboratory mice. Here, we have attempted to identify factors responsible for differences in the virulence between strain N57 and the human-derived clinical strain Miyazaki-Bali/2007 (MB). Characterization of the virulence of recombinant monoreassortant PRVs derived from highly virulent MB and low virulent N57 strains in mice revealed that compared with wild-type (WT) MB, MB-based mo

Alpharetroviruses are an important group of pathogens known to cause leukemias and tumors, and were historically considered to be restricted to avian hosts. The identification of alpharetrovirus-like envelopes in bat genomes has hinted at a potentially wider host range, although their relations to modern alpharetroviruses and distribution remains unclear. Through a paleovirological screening of 818 vertebrate genomes we identified CHIRalphaEnv, a lineage that belongs firmly within alpharetroviruses, and emerged from a cross-class transmission from saurian hosts. We determine that CHIRalphaEnv

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is a neglected tropical disease with complex sylvatic and domestic transmission cycles involving vectors, mammalian hosts, and humans. The common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) is an obligate blood-feeding species that frequently interacts with livestock and humans, yet their role in parasite maintenance in Central America remains poorly characterized.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We analyzed 207 blood samples from vampire bats collected at two sites in northern Belize over three years (2019, 2021, 2022). PCR screening revealed an o

Bats are considered reservoirs of several emerging zoonotic pathogens. Previous studies on blood parasites such as Anaplasmataceae, hemoplasmas, piroplasmids, and Hepatozoon spp. in South American bats have revealed high genetic diversity. This study investigated the molecular occurrence of these agents in 278 bats of 32 species captured in the state of Acre in the Western Brazilian Amazon. Spleen DNA samples were screened by PCR for different pathogens and tested negative for Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp., Neorickettsia spp., piroplasmids, and Hepatozoon spp. However, 84 of the 208 samples (
