Rectal infections with chlamydia and gonorrhoea in women attending a multiethnic sexually transmitted diseases urban clinic.

Sexually transmitted rectal infections with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) have been well documented in men who h … lamydia and 13.4% for rectal gonorrhoea. Urine-based screening alone would have missed 6% of rectal chlamydia infections and 35% of rectal gonorrhoea infections. Anal symptoms were reported in 12.5% of women with rectal chlamydia infections. The only associated factor identified was an age less than 28 years. We conclude that rectal screening for CT and GC should be i …

Re-infection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis infections among men who have sex with men.

Our aim was to determine the incidence of re-infection of men who have sex with men (MSM) for rectal Neisseria gonorrhoeae (RNg) and rectal Chlamydia trachomatis (RCt) infection. The medical records of 126 MSM diagnosed with RNg or RCt infections at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre were reviewed. A total of 68 of the 126 (54%) MSM were re-tested. Among the HIV-positive MSM, 17 (81%) of 21 were re-tested and eight were positive (47%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 23-72%). Among the 51 (49%) of 105 of the HIV-negative or unknown MSM re-tested, 13 (25%, 14-40) were positive. Of the 21 infections ide

[Increased incidence of gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis infections in family practice in southeast Amsterdam, 1996-2000].

OBJECTIVE: To obtain insight into the incidence of gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis infection (CT infection), and to identify any increase in these rates in a general practice in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. DESIGN: Descriptive. METHOD: Details were obtained from the automated registration system about all registered episodes of gonorrhoea (coded according to the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC): Y71 for men and X71 for women), and CT infection (code Y99 for men and X85 for women) during the period 1996-2000. RESULTS: In total, the diagnosis 'gonorrhoea' was made 26 ti

Sexually transmitted disease clinic clients at risk for subsequent gonorrhea and chlamydia infections: possible 'core' transmitters.

BACKGROUND: From an sexually transmitted disease (STD) intervention perspective, developing a practical way to identify persons in core transmitter groups has been difficult. However, persons who have repeated STD infections may be in such groups. GOAL: To evaluate a self-administered risk assessment approach that would identify STD clinic clients who were at an increased risk of being involved in gonorrhea (GC) or chlamydia (CT) transmission in the subsequent year. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort of consecutive STD clinic clients with a 1-year follow-up period. RESULTS: During a 6-month p

[Epidemiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections in adults. Role of Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae].

INCIDENCE: Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae infections cause 15 to 40% of acute pneumonia cases treated by community physicians. This incidence is lower for cases of pneumonia treated in a hospital setting, falling to less than 3% for cases treated in intensive care units. Incidence varies with the geographical area, season, age and patient population. BRONCHIAL INVOLVEMENT: Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae cause 6 to 15% of all cases of acute bronchitis and are the causal agents in approximately 5% of acute episodes in patients with chronic bronchitis. PATHOGENES

[Use of direct and serologic methods to detect Chlamydia trachomatis infections in cervix uteri of women].

Investigation included 254 women (18-75 years of age). In this number, 74 patients constituted a group with pathological changes in cervix uteri, while 180 women were seemingly healthy. The material was evaluated by a method of direct immunofluorescence (IF) with monoclonal antibody serum and a culture on McCoy cells. Antibodies in blood serum was detected by an immunoenzymatic test ELISA. Out of total number of 256 patients tested, elementary bodies of C. trachomatis were found in cylindrical cells of cervix uteri by the IF test in 54 (21.25%) of women. Analogical percentage of positive resul

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the female reproductive tract of the rat: influence of progesterone on infectivity and immune response.

As the most common cause of sexually transmitted disease in women, chlamydial infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. To better understand the role played by sex hormones in modulating the immune response of the genital tract to microbial infections, we have developed a rat model to study Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Inbred female Lewis rats were primed with progesterone and inoculated by intrauterine instillation of C. trachomatis (mouse pneumonitis strain MoPn) into each uterine horn. When infected animals were examined for the presence of

[Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection and factors with the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections in college students].

Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection is nowadays considered one of the most frequent causes of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the world, mainly affecting the group of young people under 25 years old. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis infection in newly admitted students to Universidad Nacional del Sur, Bahía Blanca, Argentina, and to evaluate the risk factors to acquire STI. For that purpose, 204 young college students with a mean age of 19 were involved in this study. Each participant delivered a sample of first-void urine and completed a que

The mouse model of Chlamydia genital tract infection: a review of infection, disease, immunity and vaccine development.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection worldwide. The impact of this pathogen on human reproduction has intensified research efforts to better understand chlamydial infection and pathogenesis. Whilst there are animal models available that mimic many aspects of human chlamydial infection, the mouse is regarded as the most practical and widely used of the models. Studies in mice have greatly contributed to our understanding of the host-pathogen interaction and provided an excellent medium for evaluating vaccines. Here we explore the advantages and disad

Effect of the purinergic receptor P2X7 on Chlamydia infection in cervical epithelial cells and vaginally infected mice.

Ligation of the purinergic receptor, P2X7R, with its agonist ATP has been previously shown to inhibit intracellular infection by chlamydiae and mycobacteria in macrophages. The effect of P2X7R on chlamydial infection had never been investigated in the preferred target cells of chlamydiae, cervical epithelial cells, nor in vaginally infected mice. In this study, we show that treatment of epithelial cells with P2X7R agonists inhibits partially Chlamydia infection in epithelial cells. Chelation of ATP with magnesium or pretreatment with a P2X7R antagonist blocks the inhibitory effects of ATP. Sim

Antibody responses to Chlamydia trachomatis vaccine candidate antigens in Chlamydia-infected women and correlation with antibody-mediated phagocytosis of elementary bodies.

Murine research has revealed a significant role for antibody responses in protection against Chlamydia reinfection. To explore potential humoral immune markers of protection elicited by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) antigens in humans in the context of presumed clinical correlates of protection, we used both an IgG1-based ELISA and a conventional total IgG ELISA to evaluate antibody responses. We evaluated responses to five CT outer membrane proteins (PmpE, PmpF, PmpG, PmpH, and MOMP), along with other promising CT antigens (Pgp3 and HSP60), negative control antigens (RecO and AtpE), and CT eleme

Immunization with Chlamydia psittaci plasmid-encoded protein CPSIT_p7 induces partial protective immunity against chlamydia lung infection in mice.

The present study evaluated the immune-protective efficacy of the Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) plasmid protein CPSIT_p7 and analyzed the potential mechanisms of this protection. The current study used recombinant CPSIT_p7 protein with Freund's complete adjuvant and Freund's incomplete adjuvant to vaccinate BALB/c mice. Adjuvants alone or PBS formulated with the same adjuvants was used as negative controls. Mice were intranasally challenged with 105 inclusion-forming units (IFU) of C. psittaci. We found that CPSIT_p7 vaccination significantly decreased the mouse lung chlamydial load, interf

Small molecule inhibitor of type three secretion suppresses acute and chronic Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a novel urogenital Chlamydia model.

Previously, we reported that a compound from a group of thiohydrazides of oxamic acids, CL-55, possessed antichlamydial activity in vitro that was accompanied by a decreased translocation of the type three secretion effector, IncA, into the host cell. In this study, the antichlamydial activity of CL-55 was tested in vivo in DBA/2 mice infected with C. trachomatis serovar D. We found that intravaginal inoculation of DBA/2 mice with the clinically relevant strain, C. trachomatis serovar D, results in a course of infection and pathology similar to that observed in humans. The early stage of infec
