Today the best radiotherapeutic procedure for treating small choroidal melanomas involves the application of rhutenium 106, thereby sparing the bulbus, or application of iodine 125 in larger tumors. In extensive tumors, the additional use of local hyperthermia promises further enhancement of brachytherapy with applicators. In the foreseeable future, therapeutic concepts primarily for the palliative treatment of advanced, metastasing melanomas might include the use of antimetabolites or therapy with monoclonal radioactively changed antibodies.

Choroid plexus papillomas are rare intracranial neoplasms that are generally benign in nature. They are seen in both children and adults and have a male preponderance. Magnetic resonance imaging, a noninvasive diagnostic tool, demonstrated the intraventricular location and the surrounding anatomy with striking clarity, more effectively than angiography and computed tomography scanning.

The authors report a case of choroid plexus papilloma developped in the fourth ventricle. After complete surgical resection, two local recurrences of the tumor occurred, and required new surgical procedures. Eight years after the first operation, a papilloma of the right lateral ventricle was resected. The histological examination showed benign choroid plexus papilloma after each operation. Recurrence and seeding of benign choroid plexus papillomas are infrequent in the literature. For this reason, a long-term follow-up, by clinical examination and CT scan, is necessary for those patients.

An 11-year-old girl was admitted with a 3-year history of decreasing hearing, and headache, occasional vomiting and poor school performance of 8 months duration. Neurologically she showed signs of a cerebellopontine angle mass. This was confirmed by CT scan, which showed an enhancing lesion in the right cerebellopontine angle. The lesion was totally removed, with excellent results. Histologically the tumor appeared to be a choroid plexus papilloma. Choroid plexus papillomas of the cerebellopontine angle are extremely rare in children.

A major site of cerebrospinal fluid production in vertebrates is the choroid plexus. The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus accumulate intracellular cyclic AMP in response to several effectors, including histamine. Choroid Plexus tumors are rare. Surgery and biopsy is diagnostic, and radiotherapy has been used as the treatment of choice for choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and recurrent choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). We report the first case of CPP responding to combination chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, bleomycin and vinblastine (CBV). This chemotherapy regimen should be considered for future trials in patients with choroid plexus tumors and recurrence after surgery and/or radiotherapy.

We describe two patients with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina who suffered from vitreous hemorrhages in adolescence. The diagnosis of gyrate atrophy was confirmed biochemically and clinically; hyperornithinemia and a deficiency of ornithine ketoacid transaminase were confirmed biochemically. Typical fundus changes of scalloped chorioretinal atrophies with sharp margins, deteriorated dark adaptation, non-recordable electroretinogram, flat electrooculogram, and constricted visual fields were noted. We believe that the vitreous hemorrhage is an ocular complication in this disorder.

Two cases of papillary carcinoma, one in a 23-month-old girl and the other in a 25-month-old boy who both died within a relatively short time after operation, were studied histologically and electron microscopically. Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is caused by deficient activity of ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase, a pyridoxal phosphate dependent enzyme. Besides the typical eye findings, abnormalities have been found on muscle biopsy, electro-encephalography, electromyography and electrocardiography, establishing this as a generalized disorder. Ornithine is markedly elevated in plasma and other body fluids. Plasma lysine, glutamate, glutamine and creatine are reduced. A rare metastatic choroidal tumor from primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma in a male is described. This tumor secreted gonadotrophins and showed the histopathologic characteristics of cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast cells. Early metastatic disease resulted in rapid death; the development of the choroidal metastatic lesion was diagnosed at autopsy.

Malignant choroid plexus papilloma is a rare disease. The autopsy case of malignant choroid plexus papilloma being suggestive of the youngest in Japan, was reported.
