Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus in the Developing Rat Brain: Deficits of Visual Perception and Structural Changes in the Visual Cortex.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cortical visual deficits occur in hydrocephalus but the morphological changes in the visual cortex are not fully understood. This study assessed the population and cytoarchitecture of neurons in the cortex of neonatal and juvenile rats, in relation to the findings on assessment of visual perception. METHODS: Hydrocephalus was induced by injecting sterile kaolin (150 mg/l) into the cisterna magna of neonatal (7 days old) and juvenile (4 weeks old) rats. Vision was assessed using a dark chamber preference test prior to sacrifice at two and four weeks for the neonatal …

Sampling Cerebrospinal Fluid and Blood from Lateral Tail Vein in Rats during EEG Recordings.

Because the composition of body fluids reflects many physiological and pathological dynamics, biological liquid samples are commonly obtaine … of putative diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Here, a procedure of combined CSF withdrawal from cisterna magna and blood sampling from the lateral tail vein in epileptic rats that are continuously video-EEG monitored is described. This procedure offers significant advantages over other commonly used techniques. It permits rapid sampling with minimal pain or …

Effects of gap junctional blockers on cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits.

The role of gap junctional communication in the coordination of vascular behavior has been well established experimentally. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the gap junctional blockers would inhibit cerebral vasospasm after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We used the double-hemorrhage model of SAH with injection of autologous arterial blood into the cisterna magna on days 1 and 2. Octanol or carbenoxolone was administered intracisternally on day 3, and repeated on days 4 and 5. Angiography was performed before (day 0) and 7 days after (day 7) SAH, and the diameter o…

Histopathological alterations in ciliary ganglions in meningitis: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well known that meningitis frequently results in optic nerve (ON) and oculomotor nerve (OMN) dysfunctions, the effects of meningitis on the ciliary ganglion (CG) have not been studied. It is expected that the CG may be affected due to the involvement of these cranial nerves in meningitis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of meningitis on the CG. METHODS: This study was conducted on thirteen rabbits. Experimental meningitis has been achieved with Streptococcus pneumonias inoculation into the cisterna magna of the animals. After follow-up of two month…

[Chiari type 1 malformation and magnetic resonance imaging].

The Chiari type 1 malformation is common. Unlike the Chiari type 2 and 3 malformations, it may remain latent for a long time, becoming sympt … udden death. Another risk is syrinx formation, resulting from obstruction of CSF circulation in the cisterna magna. Syringomyelia is detected in 32 to 74% of patients with Chiari I malformation. Treatment is surgical. Posterior fossa decompression is achieved by suboccipital craniectomy combined with laminectomy of the upper cervical segments. Surgical intervent …

Evaluation of the microvasculature and cerebral ischemia after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage in dogs.

OBJECT: Whether cerebral vasospasm occurs only in surface vessels or also in parenchymal arterioles is debatable. The present study was undertaken to evaluate comprehensively the microvasculature of the brainstem after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). METHODS: Nine mongrel dogs of either sex, each weighing between 18 and 24 kg, underwent double blood injections spaced 48 hours apart; the injections were infused into the cisterna magna immediately after angiography of the basilar arteries (BAs). Three additional dogs assigned to a control group received no blood injections. The dogs…

Release of endothelium-derived relaxing factor after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The purpose of this study was to determine the cause of the loss of endothelium-dependent relaxation observed in chronic cerebral vasospasm. A bioassay system was developed to measure the release of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) from canine basilar arteries. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was induced in dogs by two injections of autologous blood into the cisterna magna. Angiograms were performed on the 7th day after SAH to check the presence of chronic vasospasm. The animals were sacrificed on the 8th day, and in vitro experiments were performed on rings harvested from the basilar …

Pontine infarction caused by medial branch injury of the basilar artery as a rare complication of cisternal drain placement.

We present a rare complication of cisternal drain placement during aneurysm surgery. A ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm was clipped through a right pterional approach. A cisternal drain was inserted from the retro-carotid to the prepontine cistern. Postoperatively, a left-sided paresis of the upper extremity had developed. A CT brain scan revealed that the drain was located between the pons and the basilar artery, resulting in a pontine infarction. Vascular neurosurgeons should keep this complication in mind when placing a cisternal drain tube. The drain tube should not be inser

Lactate contents from cerebrospinal fluid in experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage, well correlate with vasospasm: ongoing and neurologic status.

The role of lactate composition of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with vasospasm severity and rabbit neurologic status in subarachnoid hemorrhage was determined. The neurologic status of 20 New Zealand rabbits were graded initially and then, anesthetized and basal angiograms were performed. Then 1.0 mL of CSF was withdrawn through cisterna magna and then 1 mL autologous arterial blood was injected in all rabbits over 1 minute. After 5 days, neurologic severity score (NSS) and vertebrobasilar angiograms of all rabbits were repeated. Rabbits without radiologic vasospasm or spasm under 50% (n=7) were …

Virtual cisternoscopy of intracranial vessels: a novel visualization technique using virtual reality.

This paper introduces a different visualization method which we call "virtual cisternoscopy" using 3D MRA data sets. Virtual cisternoscopy uses well known tools, such as perspective volume rendering (pVR), fly-through techniques, and interactive visualization and combines them to a new approach featuring motion to resolve spatial relationships of intracranial vessels and vascular malformations. With a dedicated flight protocol extraluminal topography of intracranial arteries was analyzed using pVR. For evaluation of difficult vascular malformations extraluminal views are necessary. Therefore,
