Acute Effects of Citrulline Malate Supplementation on Nocturnal Blood Pressure Dipping After Exercise in Hypertensive Patients: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Citrulline malate (CM), especially when used in conjunction with physical exercise, has demonstrated potential as a non-pharmacological adjunct in the management of hypertension. Nevertheless, its impact on nocturnal blood pressure dipping remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the impact of a single dose of CM on nocturnal blood pressure dipping after exercise in hypertensive individuals. METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial, twenty hypertensive adults (55 ± 16 years) were randomly assigned to either a CM (6 g) or placebo (6 g of corn st

Potential Application of Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide (Anti-CCP) for the Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis with Cut-Off Determination.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontal disease (PD) are both characterized by an inflammatory reaction. Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) is a common diagnostic test for RA. Anti-CCP is proposed to be used as a serological biomarker to detect PD in patients with RA.Methods: A case-control study was designed for 94 subjects; 42 patients with RA and 52 without RA. PD and its types were investigated among these subjects. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was used to measure anti-CCP levels in these subjects. Results: Subjects were recategorized into four g

The Effects of Combined Exercise with Citrulline Supplementation on Body Composition and Lower Limb Function of Overweight Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The combined exercise with citrulline (CIT) supplementation is a potential adjuvant treatment approach to address the declining body composition and lower limb function of overweight older adults. However, research on this approach is limited. Thus, this study performed a meta-analysis review to explore the effects of combined exercise with CIT supplementation on body composition and lower limb function among overweight older adults. The search strategy and manuscript development of this study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines.

Citrulline, Intestinal Fatty Acid-Binding Protein and the Acute Gastrointestinal Injury Score as Predictors of Gastrointestinal Failure in Patients with Sepsis and Septic Shock.

Gastrointestinal (GI) failure can be both a cause of sepsis and a consequence of the systemic pro-inflammatory response in sepsis. Changes in biomarkers of enterocyte damage, citrulline and I-FABP (intestinal fatty acid binding protein), may indicate altered intestinal permeability and damage. The study group consisted of patients with sepsis (N = 28) and septic shock (N = 30); the control group included patients without infection (N = 10). Blood samples were collected for citrulline and I-FABP and a 4-point AGI score (acute GI injury score) was calculated to monitor GI function on days 1, 3,

Serum anti-citrullinated protein antibodies and rheumatoid factor increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis-related interstitial lung disease: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aims to determine the association between antibodies including anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and rheumatoid factors (RF) and risk of rheumatoid arthritis-related interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD). METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane were searched up to September 13, 2020, for studies investigating the risk of RA-ILD in ACPA-positive patients. The statistical meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed using the Review Manager 5.4 and Stata16.0 software, respectively. RESULTS: Total 1 double-blind randomized controlled study and 16 ob

Adult-Onset Anti-Citrullinated Peptide Antibody-Negative Destructive Rheumatoid Arthritis Is Characterized by a Disease-Specific CD8+ T Lymphocyte Signature.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex autoimmune disease targeting synovial joints. Traditionally, RA is divided into seropositive (SP) and seronegative (SN) disease forms, the latter consisting of an array of unrelated diseases with joint involvement. Recently, we described a severe form of SN-RA that associates with characteristic joint destruction. Here, we sought biological characteristics to differentiate this rare but aggressive anti-citrullinated peptide antibody-negative destructive RA (CND-RA) from early seropositive (SP-RA) and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (SN-RA). We also aime

Identification of novel biomarker as citrullinated inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4, specifically increased in sera with experimental and rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and citrullinated proteins play key roles in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Many candidate citrullinated antigens have been identified in joints, but citrullinated proteins in sera are mostly uncertain in patients with RA. We explored the expression of citrullinated proteins in joints and sera of experimental arthritis, and we further investigated their specific expression correlated with the disease activity in patients with RA. METHODS: Citrullinated protein expression in tissues was examined by IHC in peptide glucose-6

Seropositivity and Antibody Profiling of Patients Are Dramatically Impacted by the Features of Peptides Used as Immunosorbents: A Lesson from Anti-Citrullinated Protein/Peptide Antibody.

Quantification of Abs toward a single epitope is critical to understanding immunobiological processes. In autoimmunity, the prognostic value of the serological profiles of patients draws much attention, but the detection of Abs toward a single epitope is not well controlled. Particularly, the rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-specific anti-citrullinated protein/peptide Abs (ACPA) are specific to a two-atom change on arginyl residues and are considered a heterogeneous family of Abs. As a model, we studied ACPA to decipher how peptide features used as immunosorbent impact Ab detection. We synthesized 30

Low levels of antibodies against common viruses associate with anti-citrullinated protein antibody-positive rheumatoid arthritis; implications for disease aetiology.

BACKGROUND: Infection by common viruses has long been discussed in the aetiology of a number of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, studies investigating this hypothesis in RA show conflicting results. These studies often lack well-matched control populations, and many do not include data on autoantibodies, genetic risk factors and other environmental factors, which are known to contribute to disease only in subgroups of patients. In the present study, we have therefore examined the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and parvovirus B19 (B19)

Treatment with L-citrulline in patients with post-polio syndrome: study protocol for a single-center, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute infection by the Poliomyelitis virus. Most often, patients who suffered from polio start to experience gradual new weakening in muscles, a gradual decrease in the size of muscles (muscle atrophy) and fatigue years after the acute illness. L-citrulline is known to change muscular metabolism synthesis by raising nitric oxide (NO) levels and increasing protein synthesis. This investigator-initiated, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, trial aims to demonstrate tha

A specific anti-citrullinated protein antibody profile identifies a group of rheumatoid arthritis patients with a toll-like receptor 4-mediated disease.

BACKGROUND: Increased expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and its endogenous ligands, is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovitis. In this study, we evaluated how these TLR4 ligands may drive pathogenic processes and whether the fine profiling of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) based on their target specificity might provide a simple means to predict therapeutic benefit when neutralizing TLR4 in this disease. METHODS: The capacity of RA synovial fluids (RASF) to stimulate cytokine production in monocytes from patients with RA was analyzed by ELISA. The presence

Regulatory CD4+ T-Cell Subsets and Anti-Citrullinated Protein Antibody Repertoire: Potential Biomarkers for Arthritis Development in Seropositive Arthralgia Patients?

OBJECTIVE: Seropositive arthralgia patients (SAP) are at high risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This prospective study aimed to determine whether altered peripheral regulatory T-cells (Tregs) and defined subsets, besides a broadened anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA) response, may qualify as biomarkers for RA development in SAP. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive SAP were prospectively assessed every 6 months for minimally 2 years. At inclusion, peripheral Treg (CD4+CD25+FoxP3+) numbers and subsets, defined as CD45RA+FoxP3low naive Tregs (Fr I), CD45RA-FoxP3high activated Tr

The frequency of antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptides and rheumatoid factor in healthy population: a field study of rheumatoid arthritis from northern Turkey.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic and an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of the synovial membrane that affects approximately 1 % of the total world population. Rheumatoid factor (RF) is a widely used auto antibody in diagnosis of the RA and found positive in 50-80 % of the patients but with a lower specificity. On the other hand, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) is the latest serological marker with a specificity around 98 %. This field survey was conducted in different regions to investigate the frequency of RF and anti-CCP and also frequency of RA

Autoantibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptide 2 (CCP2) are superior to other potential diagnostic biomarkers for predicting rheumatoid arthritis in early undifferentiated arthritis.

We evaluated the diagnostic value of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide 2 (anti-CCP2) antibodies and other potential diagnostic biomarkers (IgM rheumatoid factor, anti-agalactosyl IgG antibodies, matrix metalloproteinase 3, C-reactive protein) for predicting early development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Patients were defined as having recent-onset undifferentiated arthritis (UA) if they had developed arthritis in two or more joints within the previous 2 years and could not be classified with a well-defined arthropathy. Baseline levels of biomarkers were measured in blood samples collected at
